The "environmental NGO" regime change activist and heiress to a dictators fortune, who was all about disputing the election results in 2019 before the vote was even closed, now asking everyone for patience because the official count is not over yet! Clearly, Carlos Mesa will gain 20% and the OAS will find no sign of fraud!

I bet she is pretty miffed that her HRF sponsored regime change career has come to such an abrupt stop so shortly after it started, and she didn't even get to schmooze with all the celebrities at sxsw because her speech (and the whole thing) was cancelled because of covid!

arce getting 50% in the big cities is *nuts*, he may well be looking at the strongest mandate in any moderately legitimate general election ever if he similarly overperforms in the countryside

The thing is that the coup managed to unify all the social movements behind the MAS more than they were during the last Morales term, which also explains why this election result is in almost the same landslide territory as Morales first re-election. And a unified movement can lock down Bolivia extremely well by blockading the vital roads in the country. The coup tried to squash that early with their massacres right after they took power, but the people just continued to organize and got stronger, and extremely effective blockades basically were what caused the coup government to finally set an election date. I don't think they'll dare try for another coup; but the fascists in Santa Cruz will probably immediately start talking secession again, and Camacho as their leader won that district, so he'll feel especially emboldened.

However, until the offical results are posted, I wouldn't completely rule it out, they still might try some blatant "woops, violent indigenous thugs (white dudes sporting fascist crucenistas t-shirts) burned down a buncha ballot boxes, we must have a second round run off with a right-wing-voltron to be sure" and you betcha the EU and OAS and US would support it

Not to poor cold water over this, but if I was a fascist rear end in a top hat in charge of a country close to rebellion and faced with an uncontrolled Covid outbreak I'd look to jump ship too. Now it's time for the international institutions to defend the sanctity of the rule of law. Specifically for some random US judge to steal all of Bolivia's poo poo because they don't honor the totally legit sales of all the country's lithium Anez made.

I still don't think they are in any position to do anything right now, considering the shitshow in their own borders and the margin of MAS's victory. If they try anything the country turns into rubble, there's no dollar for them.

america is historically fine in latin america to let the country turn into rubble as punishment and a warning to others after clear electoral mandates against america's wishes. as a benefit the dice is rolled and maybe they end up getting their preferred rightwing coup government to cow the populace sufficiently after shipping enough military, financing, propaganda, torture, riot control, and counterinsurgency equipment

america will happily fund rightwing military rapist deathsquads in a losing war against a non-aligned government

hopefully trump has so emasculated the state department that the blood fervor is much more incompetent

depending on context that's not a very unreasonable thing to say. lots of people think that hard-nosed 'realism' is the only rational alternative, and pointing out that it is often counterproductive for most people in the centre is worthwhile

it's especially egregious/mask off since morales is actually of the socialist trend that considers ml a misguided implementation of socialism and makes efforts towards decentralisation and participative planning. it's absolutely a wonderful example for anarchists (who have read theory and aren't lifestylists, aka. who actually care about society and the working class) to point to and say "see, some of our postulates have merit and broad appeal" lol
