Welcome to the Internet Critic Discussion Thread 5.0! New Site owner, same derails. Thread Rules:
So how about come content?! Primarily Movies : Red Letter Media – Review movies. These guys seem mostly insulated from the "internet critic community" so they go at a bit of a different angle, especially with their knowledge of cinematography. Lindsay Ellis – Formerly known as Loose Canon, now working on various video essays mainly about films, their structure and a bunch of miscellaneous stuff. The Cosmonaut Variety Hour - Markus (& Friends) makes videos about popular films and media with a critical but upbeat P.O.V. Kyle Kallgren (aka Brows Held High) – Does in-depth reviews of what are generally called "arthouse films" (though he hates the term). Allison Pregler (Movie Nights) – Hosts a semi-scripted review show about mostly schlocky movies, does the so called Manic-Episodes about various TV shows and the gift to Quinton Revieuws - I've been Quinton Reviews, and that's all you need. Mr Sunday Movies - Australia's largest movie YouTube channel covering all things movies, comic books, news, reviews, TV shows and video games. Phelous (Phelous.com) – Reviews movies, horror, animated features, knockoff toys and whatever else he finds amasing to share. Jenny Nicholson – Tackles a verity of pop culture topics and movies in an endearingly deadpan absurdist (...and borderline insane) style. Folding Ideas (Dan Olson) – Does in-depth analysis of films and film making theory, among other topics and weekly streams. Movies with Mikey – Lovable doof talks about the movies he loves. Wisecrack – Pop Philosophy on your favorite pop culture. Ed Glaser (Neon Harbor) – Ed Glaser looks at movies very directly inspired by other more famous movies. Renegade Cut – Leon Thomas analyzes the plot and various themes in a wide variety of movies. Lessons From The Screenplay – Video essay series taking specific movies and breaking down how they'd be written. Diamanda Hagan – She's Diamanda Hagan, and she has to live with that every day-- all while reviewing movies that no person in their right mind should watch (which makes her perfectly qualified). TV, Animation and Anime : No Small Parts – A youtube series about bit part and character actors. SF Debris (Chuck Sonnenburg) – Reviews (mostly) Sci-Fi television episode by episode. Has a pretty good middle-ground between plot summary and plot analysis. Does voices for characters in a non-grating way. Poparena – Reviews of books, movies, and TV shows from the 90s and 80s. His most notable series is his reviews of every single Animorphs book and TV episode in order from start to finish. Bennet the Sage – Reviews anime OVAs, movies, and series of... dubious quality from years past with Anime Abandon. Super Eyepatch Wolf – In depth recommendation videos on mainly anime but also games, films and comics. Will praise the good, but never one to blindly fanboy. Gigguk – Anime nerd talking about currently running anime, is mildly self-aware. Mother's Basement – An anime review show covering various films, shows and OVA series. Has something of an obsession with fixing SAO. Suede – Anime reviewer focused primarily on reviewing the original Pokemon anime and its theatrical offshoots. Videogames : Kim Justice – All you ever wanted to know about British home gaming, British developers, classic games and micro computers. Matt McMuscles - Former SuperBestFriends member striking out on their own. Scott The Woz - Hey all, Scott here. Slightly too self aware explores all things videogame. Jim loving Sterling, Son (The Jimquisition) – Weekly Editorials on why the AAA gaming industry sucks and deep dives into the bowels of Steam. Has a healthy relationship with Boglins. Mild obsession with AAA videogame practices. Civvie 11 - Civvie reviews retro games from the First-Person Shooter genre, modern shooters inspired by retro FPS games, and the occasional film, typically adaptations of the games he's covered. Errant Signal – Makes game criticism videos. And he is the first one to admit how pretentious that it sounds. LGR (Lazy Game Reviews) – Charming content about the old days of videogames, the hardware it was played on and other things that catch his drift. Might be trying to make us all build a 386. Ross Scott – He mostly does Machinima (notably Freeman's Mind), but also has a stellar show called Ross' Game Dungeon which is strikingly unlike most other game review shows. He picks more obscure games and just kind of... chills and talks about them for 30 minutes. Despite the way that sounds, they're well-edited, structured, and paced to boot! Cinemassacre / Angry Video Game Nerd – Home of Board James, James & Mike Play, and the Angry Video Game Nerd. Matthewmatosis – Breaks down and reviews video games. He's not huge on the cultural commentary, but he's shines at analyzing games on a more mechanical level. Can be strongheaded about subjective flaws. Noah Caldwell-Gervais – Game analysis’ equivalent to a college professor lecturing a class. While traveling cross country in a VW Bus. Innuendo Studios – Guy talking about video games in a socio-political context, recently seems to dabble more into full political videos. TheGamingBritShow – British video game critic talks about his views on games. Super Bunny Hop (George Weidman) – New games, old games, and extensive recaps of Metal Gear Solid plots. Also makes videos covering nerdy trips and occasional controversies. Raycevick – Covers (older) videgames and does retrospectives on them. Presenting two series, "So I've Finally Played" and "Years Later". The former focuses on his initial impressions of various games, while the Years Later series are long form video retrospectives on several notable franchises, such as Halo or Mass Effect. Ahoy – Months pass between new Ahoy videos, but when he releases one it's an event. Some of the most painstakingly crafted, highly researched and brilliantly made longform video content you will find on YouTube. Often concentrates on first-person shooters, known for his long videos on Polybius, Quake and Doom as well as the "Iconic Arms" series. DJ Slope's Game Room – DJ Slope gave up a promising career as a DJ and Jackass-esque pain donkey on British TV (not a joke) to become a truly excellent reviewer and budding documentarian on YouTube. Known for his "Complete History" retro video game series, and "Kickscammers" where he goes into detail about some truly baffling attempts at crowdfunding. History Respawned – Covers how well video games represent actual history. Nostalgia Nerd – UK-based YouTuber who has a great love for old computers and a beautiful, dulcet tone from the Eastern counties. Known for making incredibly long labour of love Story documentaries about old computers like the Amiga and Atari ST, as well as "UK Thrifts". Pushing Up Roses – Retro reviewer with a strong focus on point-and-clicks and other adventure titles. Also does the odd film review now and again, and is known for "Death In Video Games". Gamehut – Formerly worked in the biz on things like Sonic3D and focuses a lot on "how we did this" programming things, informal entertainment. Music : Todd in the Shadows – Pop song reviews, retrospectives on one hit wonders and albums that changed a career for the worse. Also a The Needle Drop - The Internet's Melon, reviews music and united us all by having taste nobody 100% agrees with. The Rap Critic – Reviews Hip-Hop and Rap music, also a pretty decent singer/rapper himself. Sideways – Music nerd nerds out over music in the most hardcore way. Comics and Manga : Linkara (Atop the 4th wall) – Reviews (mostly superhero) comic books. He also has incredibly silly ongoing plots that he's making into a movie because of his Patreon. Nowadays his skits are no longer in the video, taking place before or after the actual content. Weekly Manga Recap – Our hosts read manga (Japanese comics) from Weekly Shonen Jump (and a few from Crunchyroll) and give their thoughts on these chapters on a weekly basis. Toys : MMPR toys – Watch a couple formerly connected to the industry have way too much passion for Super Sentai and Power Rangers toys. Thew Adams – Ever wanted to see a man talk about plastic toys for hours? Immensely watchable even for non-fans, sheer enthusiasm in video form. Other media : Nerdwriter – Covers all areas of media culture in weekly video essays, ranging from music, traditional art, comics, comedy, directing and so forth. Maven of the Eventide (Elise Hansen) – Host of Vampire Reviews, the Maven of the Eventide looks at vampires as they appear in all sorts of media. Rantasmo (Needs more Gay) – As the host of Needs More Gay, Rantasmo looks at the depiction of homosexual representation in media. Old School Wrestling – The best wrestling content on YouTube. Lengthy, hilarious but superbly researched PPV review videos from Jay, OOC, and V1 - your favourite trio of riotous Irishmen. State of the world / Politics : Shaun – Self proclaimed "failed Let's Player" pokes fun at the Alt-Right and other cultural issues with research and deadpan delivery. Hbomberguy – Confirmed Soyboy Harris Bombyman dissects the alt-right and its poorly thought-out ideas with actual researched facts and humour. He also reviews things. Feminist Frequency – Literally tries to enslave and brainwash men by making harmless entry level feminist themed content about various media (mostly TV, Movies, and Video Games). Things I was thinking to add: Mandalore (https://www.youtube.com/user/MandaloreGaming) Billiam (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcHBw_Rs56RFcisYAOlFfmQ) nostalgie/older media videos Whitelight (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVWhVAZwCdQsPZL-mDLcxPQ) - Looking at games a few years later, kinda like Reycevik. Colourshed (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJRLyQRpRQCJTRoV7oB2eHA) - Videogames nostalgia. I did a surface glance at them and didn't see anything bad but Twitter tends to error for me so maybe I missed some hot takes. All other feedback very welcome.

Mandalore is fine except for having SSeth (just an oldschool 4chan edgelord with a penchant for, well, 4chan humor) cameo though SSeth's crass jokes aren't usually on display in Mandalore's stuff Whitelight seems fine too. I haven't watched that much of his stuff though. EDIT: A few recommendations: Sarah Z: covers all kinds of oddball stuff from pop culture to old internet lore in a style usually similar to Jenny Nicholson. Red Bard: covers anime and the history of various con trends with the occasional divergence into other media Jacob Geller: uses pop culture (primarily videogames) as a jumping off point into interesting philosophical essays. For example, he recently used Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 to talk about how much cars change the landscape. Octavius King: Another retro gaming reviewer with her own style. She had some issues with her channel last year, but came back strong after a reboot of her reviewing style. EDIT2: How could I forget Kaiserbeamz the other really good retro anime reviewer who covers both good and bad classics. Mokinokaro fucked around with this message at 22:34 on Oct 19, 2020 |

If we're recommending Matt McMuscles, we should also recommend another SuperBestFriendsPlay alumni: WoolieVs. He carries on the spirit of the old channel the best by doing rotating Let's Plays, hosts the Castle Superbeast podcast (formerly the Super Best Friendscast), and the occasional weapons-grade shitpost.

Mokinokaro posted:Mandalore is fine except for having SSeth (just an oldschool 4chan edgelord with a penchant for, well, 4chan humor) cameo though SSeth's crass jokes aren't usually on display in Mandalore's stuff Yeah I don't think Mandalore is super woke or anything, but he's fine. Based on what he's said when he's been on the PST pod (mocking Rowling's transphobia, everything having to do with his horror story going to see a play in the deep swamp) I really don't think he's a chud, he just has an unfortunate dude in armor logo and collabs with sseth semi-frequently. quote:How could I forget Kaiserbeamz the other really good retro anime reviewer who covers both good and bad classics. Also this, Kaiserbeamz puts out some incredibly high effort videos that are really good, but has a criminally low view/sub count. Watch this man talk about Japanese cartoons.

For movies (and sometimes other stuff) I recommend adding The Armchair Auteur (Dominic Griffin) a guy who does pretty concise reviews of both current and older stuff and covers a fun range of genres. A couple of videos that I think are pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIVApFfJFaQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9jYPkQnSzg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnHHb9c61Jw

I recommend Chris Davis on the video game spectrum. He has a more grounded, less verbose, and better scheduled approach to video game critique than Joseph Anderson. Reviews current releases and analyzes series in hindsight. He can tell you in one sentence that Mass Effect Andromeda was terrible. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgnPgGFT3fRVkXKL59iFDzQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifTMC7ybZDc

I forgot to suggest Toy Galaxy! As you'll have guessed there's a focus on toys, but also on pop culture generally, especially TV shows that are perhaps of their time, such as this, his latest on Eerie Indiana: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67vm5wwSavs Also does well-researched deep-dives into major toylines like Transformers and GI Joe and oddities like Pepsi Man. And just shows off toys.

A few bad movie reviewing channels I follow (as in they review bad movies, not that they're bad at doing it): Ralph the Movie Maker: Focuses on detailed, technical analysis. Can be a bit dry in his delivery but his analytical skills are top-notch. Your Movie Sucks: Has a wide variety of content including long-form demolitions of specific movies, shorter looks at recent releases (including ones he likes) and even highlights of gaming streams and other random stuff. Very funny no matter what he's doing. Filmento: Usually likes to focus on one aspect of a movie to explain why it worked or didn't work A mix of reviews of both good and bad films. And one non-movie channel: Internet Historian: It's debatable whether you'd call him a reviewer per se, but he does talk about stuff in a... review-ish manner. Mainly he does videos on viral internet phenomena and weird news. The main reason to watch him, though, is because he's extremely funny, using editing and animation to make nearly anything hilarious. Although he'll calm things down and get serious when he has to, such as in the Balloon Boy video.

Just to head this off: yes he does sometimes make some 4chan like jokes, but he's definitely not a chud. He's just an old school channer who held onto that humor a bit. He doesn't dogwhistle or anything, but you will get the odd rather "blue" joke from his videos.

Glad to be here in the thread for Year Zero of the new age of posting. I just discovered this series thanks to the algorithm, and it seems pretty ok. It's called Cartoonist Kayfabe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY24CrAtmv8 It's two early 40s guys who grew up on comics in the 90s who now make comic books themselves, and here they review specific issues of old comics, sometimes covering longer works and related stuff like old issues of Wizard. They mostly talk about art technique and provide historical context. As someone who was in grade school and reading comics during the Rob Liefeld era, I'm really enjoying their deep dives into the style and personalities of that era of comics, especially the ephemera like Wizard Magazine. They have some fun long-from interviews with creators from the era too, like Louise Simonson and Chris Claremont. Maybe it's too inside baseball, but as someone who hasn't read a comic book since 1999 and who hasn't thought about any of it since I was a kid, it's a fun journey to take.

Oh, if there's still room for recommendations... If we're going to have a Politics section I'll throw in for Beau of the Fifth Column: https://www.youtube.com/user/unvoicedproject He doesn't get talked about much here but I generally like him. As opposed to a lot of politics channels that get posted in the thread he tends to do short daily videos addressing current topics and his thoughts. This makes it a lot harder to just go back and watch when you're bored, but it's kind of nice to just have a 5-10 minute rundown when you want it. He's pretty leftist and also talks from a Southern point of view. I like it and it makes him stand out a little. Also, since I didn't see her in the list, Nyx Fears: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGC3ocH2v8O7elbGwGKdaBQ She covers horror movies and a lot of schlock, usually from interesting angles and often with a trans or generally LGBT lens. For example, she did a surprisingly interesting video about re-watching Sleepaway Camp after transitioning. There's also a whole series covering some of the most disgusting movies you can watch if you hate yourself. Her video aesthetic has changed a lot and she spent a little time in the last year or so re-finding her voice, but I think she's doing well now. It's a very specific type of schlocky fun with a lot of video effects and what I "think" counts as goon-style irony. Parakeet vs. Phone fucked around with this message at 00:23 on Oct 20, 2020 |

I'll go ahead and throw in a recommendation for Core-A Gaming, a fighting game channel that does short essays on various topics. What's great isn't just how he makes a lot of difficult concepts very easy to understand, but he cites his research in academic studies and psychology books.
