Oh, well right on I can really respect that. It's interesting to be the host of such a nakedly consumerist program but also still be caring enough to put your foot down and use your power for a well-meaning cause.

Is there a connection between Desert Storm and Car Manufacturers? I mean, in the way that would provoke choosing ot only feature US manufacturers.

I thought there is/was a "Black Book" containing the source prices, but someone figured out their system. And like Michael Larson before him, they added other stuff to throw people off and prevent a repeat. Terry Kniess didn't flush all his money away though.

Thursday, we get some more "Holey Moley" - the format is basically a "winner take all" format, where only one of the golfers gets $250,000 (the rest get just the putter and jacket) and it's still very weird.... starting to think it should've just been a $25,000 with a $100,000 final, but the holes are very clever (and Riggle poking fun at how cheap some of them are is hilarious)

I just started watching through this on their channel on YouTube. The show is far more entertaining than it really has any right to be... The commentary is pretty great.

Terry Kniess didn't memorize anything, though - there was a superfan in the audience that day who was giving people the correct prices named Ted Slauson.

Rutlege is a big child so it's good casting, actually.

I reviewed that show AND "Karma" on HBO Max and "The Great Debate" on SyFy in my most recent episode

The problem is inconsistent, I still enjoyed Hyperdrive more than Floor is Lava, but it's LEAGUES better than Flinch and equal to Awake.

Also for those that have seen "DOCUMENTAL" on Amazon, Australia's Version "LOL : Last One Laughing" hosted by Rebel Wilson Debuted Last Week featuring Australian Comedians trying to make each other laugh for $100,000. (Without the Buy-In)

I've also been watching "Alan Carr's Epic Game Show" and it's just boring or bland or adding stuff for the sake of stretching out for time.

Every "Game" had some crap pyramid added to it.

Play Your Cards Right/Card Sharks - Pyramid of Cards with Prize Tree
The Price is Right - The "Price Range" is predetermined and there is a "Prize Pyramid" next to the grid.
Take Your Pick - The End Game is also a Pyramid to "Climb" but the "Top" is a 50/50 all or nothing gamble.
Strike It Lucky - Now with more Screens on the top to make a pyramid a Prize-Tree to win a luxury trip, that would most likely have been the "final screen" when the show originally aired 30 years ago.

I await to see "Bully's Prize Pyramid" or whatever annoying "Throw the Dart into the smaller and smaller triangle" they are gonna come up with.

If these were pilots for pick-ups, I would scrap each and every one of them, even The Price is Right.

Catch Phrase has done better AND even that has a pyramid-end game!

The Dutch and Belgians have been doing this largely uninterrupted (and I'm sure you know it started in Belgium) for a couple of decades and the game really evolves more than you might expect over seasons if you've only been exposed to the English-language runs.

This was being discussed way back when the cube was not just an active concern, but actually hot in the UK, like 2010. They did a pilot with Neil Patrick Harris that went nowhere.

However, I'm just finding out now that ITV (as of just last month) is looking to relaunch the game in the UK, so who knows.

Season 2 of Press Your Luck has been fantastic! The pacing and production for the first season of Press Your Luck, while not bad, was just a little "off." Odd camera angles, lack of music cues, commercial breaks at awkward times, etc. At times it almost seemed like the episodes were edited together at the last minute. With this season they've really hit the ground running and basically fixed every issue* I had with the first batch of episodes!

*Buttons are still too bulbous. This season they've built the base up to mask the button's long neck, but the button itself is too round to be slappable like the original's.

All hail the White Thing!

I just watched one the worst episodes of Chopped ever aired. Last night's new episode included:

  • The first chop happened because she cut herself with 75 seconds remaining and couldn't plate her dish. It's heavily implied she would have won.
  • The other three chefs were not great.
  • Production got into the act by mislabeling mangosteen.
  • The winner still won in spite of serving plastic wrap.

ABC continues knocking it out of the park with their game show revivals.

Very much enjoyed Supermarket Sweep. Same formula is just as good as it always was, plus the double-or-nothing addition to the bonus round is a nice way of raising the stakes without dragging out the game. The most surprising thing is the addition of this wacky cast of characters that work in the grocery store. On paper it sounds like it'd be the most cringe-worthy idea, but in practice it's so stupid it's good.

Similar to Press Your Luck's transition from season 1 to 2, Card Sharks made the same kind of improvement. Every minor gripe I had about its first season was seemingly addressed and fixed. 7 cards to win instead of 10, leading to an actual win outside of sudden death for once! Ties in the bonus round result in a push instead of a loss. Finally, they added physical score displays in front of each contestant which look far superior than the simple on-screen graphics of the first season.

And I guess Millionaire airs between those two. I'd rather watch Jeopardy. :smugbert:

Now where's my Classic Concentration revival?! :argh:

I popped in and out tonight, it makes me wish for daytime game shows in place of "Ellen clone #433" talk show. Supermarket sweep and Card Sharks have a lightness to them that I believe could work. Hell supermarket sweep could try and be ad free* on hulu.

Oh yeah, first season was definitely good, it just had some minor issues due to it being a new production.

When the contestants were given their multiple choices for a question, the camera would switch to a wide angle with the contestants at the bottom of the screen, similar to the original PYL. The problem with that is the multiple choices aren't displayed on the screen in this new series so you'd have this awkward lingering wide-angle shot of the contestants just standing there while Banks reads the choices off camera. It's like they filmed it with the intention to add the choices on screen later, but never got around to it. I don't know if they changed directors or what, but season 2's camera angles and when they switch are a lot more dynamic and done with better purpose now.

The first season also had some awkward pacing issues. Commercial breaks would happen in the middle of players' turns. Now, commercials only come after a player uses up or passes their spins. That allows the game to flow much smoother than before.

The second season finally has victory music that plays when someone wins the main round. It was an odd omission that there wasn't any sort of fanfare after a win in season 1, only the sound of applause while waiting for the show to go to commercial.

All minor things overall that the producers of ABC's game shows are taking notice of and improving upon season to season. This tells me these game shows aren't simply looked at as nostalgic cash grabs, but are being set up to be staples for years to come.

Main reason I'm noticing these sorts of things is that I want to build a sort of portable game show production that can be rented out for events locally, so I've been extremely detail oriented about what is and is not working on modern game shows. I already have the programming knowledge, now I'm trial and erroring my way through woodworking and electrical engineering to build prototypes like eggcrate displays, https://www.instagram.com/p/B3qfMZGhPKO/, and a Combs-era Family Feud face off podium, https://www.instagram.com/p/CDZ0PcYB9As/.

Seeing this game show resurgence over the past few years has been extremely inspiring. I'm just hoping it lasts like it did across the 70s-90s so that I have enough time to build my project and get it out there!

Context
Sep 11, 2006

This is all awesome, thanks for the rundown. I hadn't consciously noticed any of those things, but it makes sense! I think it's the same in both seasons, but I do like how the board sound in the bonus game has a lot more bass or something than in the main round.

I need to check out Card Sharks too, if it's better. I couldn't get into the first season. And your work looks great! I would have no idea how to begin constructing something like that.
