Yeah it's impossible to get it legit unless you import the Blu-rays of Plus (the dub is included), the one Frontier movie pack with subs or Delta's which also have subs. But that also means paying JP Blu-ray prices. Big West has been moving in on lawsuits for the Macross rights in Australia and Europe that they won (Harmony Gold had claimed them and were in the wrong), so they might be moving to try to fight HG over the Macross rights in the US with the legal precedent of the past two cases but god knows if that will work or if they really are taking action. I've managed without a license for the most part and my city's bus service is terrible, but I'm in pretty good shape. I absolutely did not realize how horribly designed places in the US can get if you want to walk anywhere until I talked to a few American friends about it a bit more, though.
