You are getting killed by hunters in a pipe system because ratting is boring as gently caress but making isk in eve is a requirement. Nobody is getting paid to watch home systems for roaming gangs, so i don't quite understand what there is to train exactly. People help and post to intel channels but at the end of the day, the folks who are ratting or mining are not fighting just hostiles, they are fighting loving boredom and more fun distractions. This also doesn't account for logged of reds in system, wormhole, and filaments. poo poo happens and that is just something you deal with in Null. Everyone is going to get caught not paying attention eventually, its just null. At the end of the day, most people are not going to travel around ratting on their own, they are either going to join a ADM fleet more often or accept less isk for the same boring poo poo they have had to do. Again, not a net benefit for the game at large.

That has been the main sticking point with actual 'risky EvE' ideas: There are entirely too many cheat & cheese mechanics for EvE to really work the way it is advertised. As long as that long list of fundamental flaws remains, people will be essentially able to choose to simply not fight and/or not take risks.

There are way too many poorly designed mechanics that allow for this, and they strongly determine how logistics is done, how money is made and particularly how war is fought. Like you said: There is no 'high risk, high reward' in EvE: There is only time + patience = reward. You could say that a) undocking b) doing it solo-ish and c) not metagaming your rear end off is super risky, but why would you do such a thing?
