there's also this table which is surprisingly affordable! - but the space I need to move the table through is 42" wide, so I'd have to tilt it a bit which might be weird when I have a jigsaw puzzle on it!

https://www.knoll.com/product/rockwell-unscripted-easy-table-42-round

there's also a 40" square table for the same price.

https://www.knoll.com/product/rockwell-unscripted-easy-table-40-40

I kind of prefer circular though since I have so many straight lines and 90 degree angles already.

I have a round dining table and I like it better than a rectangular for socializing and not bashing my sides on its corners. Have you thought about getting a foldable table so it’s easier to drag out whenever you want to use it? My dream folding table that I will probably never own is one of these vintage Castellis.

I prefer to have a regular table because I had an interior designer say it (plus the chairs) would help with the sparsity of the entry (sparsity because I don't own a lot of stuff, and that area doesn't get any natural light so there's not much reason to actively utilize it). Also I would like to use it partly for jigsaw puzzles which I do over multiple sessions, so folding it up when I "put it away" is not an option.

I also realized that for some other activities square or rectangular is going to be necessary to have the space I need, so I think I'm leaning towards this one now.

https://www.knoll.com/product/rockwell-unscripted-easy-table-40-40

this table is a bit smaller which is nice but too expensive https://www.knoll.com/product/stromborg-table-36-square

I could also get that eames table in the 30x30 square size.

Oh right on, if it works for you then that matters the most. I like both of those but I lean toward the Rockwell over the Stromborg. The Rockwell looks more homey and as much as I like powder coated steel and splaying myself out on a marble surface on a hot summer day, the Stromborg leans too heavily toward office/institutional furniture for my tastes.

My dining table is about 41 inches round which is a good size for my small ish open concept apartment. Size wise for puzzles I would go with the size that matches the largest puzzle you’d see yourself completing (plus a buffer around the edge for loose pieces), but not too big that it constricts the flow of your space or access to all four sides of the table.

Right, the other part is that I play scrabble tournaments and sometimes have someone over to play, so 36-40" square is pretty much the ideal space for that.

I recently looked at a house, MCM from the 60s, that has wooden walls, but not like smooth shiny wood paneling, it's made of vertical planks and it's a little rough in texture. I had never seen walls like that before. It actually looks quite nice on its own, but the floors and ceilings are wood too and having the same color wood 360° and up and down is a little maddening.

Can that kind of wooden wall be painted? Stained? Is it advisable? Any other good good ways to break up the monotony of color/texture a little?

You could certainly paint it. Depending on how rough it is it might need a little sanding before paint/between coats so the finish isn't rough and prickly. You could also do something like staining it or pickling/liming it for a lighter look? That would show the wood but break things up things a bit.

If it's too much wood and one thing has to be not wood, you might consider painting the ceiling instead? If it's a dark room it will make it a ton brighter, and since nobody will touch it you don't have to worry about getting a non-fuzzy finish.

I'm pretty jealous, that's a really awesome style imo and I would leave it as is. I assume you mean something like this?

I would change the floor instead. Or just have enough rugs to reduce the effect a bit. in this staged pic it looks like they have a stone or concrete floor

It's going to be a lot easier to deal with the floor than the ceiling. I would look up some other MCM homes with those kind of walls for some inspiration. Do you have any pictures? You said you were looking at the house, was it to buy? in that case I assume there are pictures online somewhere.

I had a room that was similar but oak. Actionjackson gives good advice on this one - definitely do ceiling, area rug first. Walls as a last resort. In my room I did a chair rail, and whitewashed the ceiling and below the chairrail. It was a nice effect.
