right now you have to make no more than $8.50/hour at 40 hrs/week to qualify for expanded medicaid.

weird how the standard insurance deductible has gone up to $8k/year while the federal poverty level, and the medicaid threshold on which it's based, have barely nudged.

there's literally situations where people will make marginally above the poverty level and get into a medical emergency, putting them deeper into debt than if they just quit their job, burned several thousand of their own dollars, and went on medicaid

the expanded unemployment comp was "enough" to push people past the medicaid income threshold.

Right but this would be how the public option works bc its just medicaid at a federal level for red states that didnt opt in

I'm self-employed and when I passed the medicaid limit last year I called to tell the state I was now making too much to be on medicaid and they were stunned that I was self-reporting.

but I didn't want to be audited a year later and have to pay back any money, and I couldn't find a definitive source that said I wouldn't, because they're not gonna make that info easily accessible.

There's a thought.

I want to see where we are now wrt $15/hr.

Federal Poverty Level (FPL):
  • $21,720 for family of three.
  • $12,760 for single adult.

Eligibility threshold by state (PDF):

Median:
  • For family of three 138% FPL, or, $29,973.60.
  • For single adult 138% FPL, or, $17,606.80.

Contrast to:
  • $15/hr at 40 hours/week is $31,200.
  • $15/hr at 30 hours/week is $23,400.
  • $15/hr at 20 hours/week is $15,600.

Yeah, that'll push millions onto lovely and extortionate plans.

edit:

Forgot this bit, from wiki:

quote:

The effective nationwide minimum wage, the wage that the average minimum wage worker earns, is $11.80 as of May 2019.

Contrast to:
  • $11.80/hr at 40 hours/week is $24,544.
  • $11.80/hr at 30 hours/week is $18,408.
  • $11.80/hr at 20 hours/week is $12,272.

So, yeah, that'll push millions onto lovely and extortionate plans.

Kill for gain or shoot to maim
But we don't need a reason
The Golden Goose is on the loose
And never out of season
Blackened pride still burns inside
This shell of bloody treason
Here's my gun for a barrel of fun
For the love of living death
The killer's breed or the demon's seed
The glamour, the fortune, the pain
Go to war again, blood is freedom's stain
Don't you pray for my soul anymore
Two minutes to midnight
The hands that threaten doom
Two minutes to midnight
To kill the unborn in the womb

And it got me thinking how crazy it is that probably everybody knows this but won't recognize how crazy that is. Nobody likes her. They picked her as VP and immediately started hiding her (except for the attempt at "she wears CHUCKS") more than they do Joe Biden, who visibly has dementia and can't campaign actively, because nobody likes her. But like nobody is even discussing that beyond bland succ slay Kween stuff

I just read this rage inducing article where the leader of Democrats Abroad here claims that she's proud of helping build the most progressive platform ever. This lady has lived here for 21 years, with the benefit of a fantastic medical system that's free, quick, and easy to use. And she's bragging about the Democratic platform. This means tested bullshit that's not going to help anyone. What the hell is wrong with these people?

biden was likeable in the past because they thought he was a dipshit uncle that was kind of creepy ‘but in a fun way’, and it was only ‘fun’ for people because the general public doesn’t really think a vice president has to do anything he could gently caress up too bad

Biden was a dipshit who kept trying to be on the cutting edge of neoliberal policymaking, was best buds with segregationists, and was only chosen specifically to assuage fears that Obama would be some sort of black radical. He was really the forerunner of "amoral, neoliberal politician picked to do the bidding of corporate America and punch left." And he did all of this to try to become President. Unfortunately for him - and fortunately for America - he kept being exposed as a dumbass and fell flat on his face despite desperately trying to be Jack loving Kennedy like his very being depended on it.

As Vice President, everyone in Obama's circle ignored him and thought he was a moron. In popular culture, The Onion turned him into some sort of cool grandpa when he was always a hotheaded frat dumbass. What started as an obvious and clear parody of how milquetoast and poo poo he was, somehow this actually caught on through sheer repetition. He looked "good" going up against two of the dumbest vice presidential picks in American history, Palin and Ryan, which further burnished his reputation.

Now he's somehow America's moral conscience, which is an absolute joke. Everyone (liberals in NYC and DC) talks about how he's the uniter we need, a blue collar guy, the light in the darkness, the next FDR?, and a bunch of other insanely myopic, inane commentary. I think it goes far beyond just being a comparison to Trump, because this is the first nominee in modern history whose entire assumed personality was foisted upon him by the media after his own attempts at crafting one failed.

Inflation isn't the most accurate measurement of how much the cost of living has risen.

Accretionist posted:

Last I checked:
  • Increases in spending power are disproportionately larger than increases in prices. So, businesses can just raise prices. e.g. Northern Europe's expensive fast food (rich countries are expensive countries).
  • This is only a problem if you can't raise prices:
    • Charities, etc. e.g. My buddy's wife helps run a charity and if Florida raises their minimum wage to $15/hr, they'll need to significantly up their fundraising game or its lights out in 5 - 10 years.

Yeah, Oregon does that and it works fine:

Yeah it's cool and makes sense.

The "different states" argument is so dumb. Things don't get expensive just because you cross statelines, but they often do when you cross county lines.
