Moralists don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded.

I get what this weeks episode of Elaina was trying to say but it felt like the episode was only like half of what it should be to tell that type of story

There’s some things that were omitted in the adaptation for Elaina, but I think it was fine. There were some things in the original story which I'm still not sure about, such as the kitchen cooking, which was a lot more ominous and ambiguous.

I was wondering why I felt like I'd already seen the first two episodes of Wandering Witch, but it's because there were something like four chapters of a manga adaptation that were TLed years ago which I'd read.

Akudama Drive episode 3 stuff:

So the episode makes a point of the Executioners having infiltrators and the Boss potentially calling in backup. The opening has a fourth Executioner in addition to the Master, Pupil and Boss. Said fourth Executioner is a short-ish guy with blonde hair and green eyes. This could be a red herring, and for all we know he could be in heavy disguise even if it isn't, but it is a match for Hoodlum's stature and hair/eye colour.

Watched the latest Wandering Witch and I don't think it was as bad as last week's. When you're dealing with a very powerful witch with mental trauma issues in a dead country, sometimes the best option is to just get the gently caress out of there ASAP for your own sake.

Having read the novel, the thing that bummed me out was really that they removed 1.) a bit more material clearly establishing that Elaina actually really hits it off with Mirarose before the fight, to the point where I'm almost not sure if she's meant to have a bit of a crush on her and 2.) Mirarose is much more lucid and menacing after killing Javalier, in a way that Elaina (who, again, had grown much fonder of her than the anime really made apparent) clearly finds deeply unsettling and more than a little painful. Instead of losing touch and reality and talking to her dead spouse while Elaina just watches in the background, the novel's version of events ends with Mirarose "teasingly" offering to join Elaina on her journey, to which Elaina responds only with "please stop." It all serves to give the story some much more personal and specific teeth than just another "gee, sucks to be THAT country" one-off and I don't feel like the anime really got it across at all.

It's weird because it's really nicely produced and still directed and storyboarded well-enough in the moment, but the overall adaptation decisions have been mediocre to bad basically from the beginning IMO.

My disappointment at Elaina just makes me want to watch Kino's Journey--I know it got a new season recently, but was that one a remake? Can I just watch them all (or are they not that good either)?

Sucks because I really enjoy the episodic traveler format. Mushishi covers that itch somewhat, and handles tragic stories with more nuance.

the 2003 kino's journey is a classic, the remake is not particularly great but has some stories that weren't in the 2003 one

Kino 2003 is incredibly good. Legitimately one of the best anime ever made.

The more recent Kino is... okay. Kino 2003 had an incredibly talented director to elevate the material, and cherry picks a lot of the strongest material, and makes a lot of changes to make it work better. The more recent Kino basically just adapts stuff at random and hews pretty closely to what's in the novels without much in the way of inspired directing. A lot of the most interesting elements of Kino 2003 are original to that show, also. It's decent but the sum of it is that kino 2003 is incredibly talented staff taking good material and making it great, and the more recent kino is taking decent material and adapting it competently.

The more recent kino isn't really a sequel or a remake. It adapts a couple of the same stories as 2003 but also a lot of different ones.

tl;dr watch kino 2003.

Isn't the recent Kino series literally a Greatest Hits collection of the novel based on a fan poll, or something like that?

I think they took the poll results for 'best stories' into account but I don't think they literally adapted the top 13. Might be wrong on that, though. Either way it means it's harder for the show to establish a steady throughline that connects all the stories the way 2003 does, and since they're well liked stories they probably wanted to hew pretty close to the original novels.

People who are aware of the prominence of this stuff in the fan culture/industry mostly think it sucks but still wanna destress to funny cartoons after their lovely day without bumming themselves out thinking about it so you'll tend to get avoidance of the conversation or dismissive responses if you bring up being bummed about it. That said you really can't do poo poo about it so the advice here is the best you can do if it doesn't rear its head in the show itself. Every kids show has a lovely fandom but you don't have to interact with the fandom at all.

Yeah, my biggest issue with the industry is related to people that work on the shows getting incredibly lovely paychecks and loving draconic hours. Yes, it's probably going to take some herculean effort to change that, but goddamn people shouldn't be loving up their body to that extent for almost nada.
