Today I learned that Astro Boy (1983) just became available on Amazon Prime and it's wild how they break the fourth wall and have some other reckless stuff in the first four minutes of the first episode.

The OP and ED are really good and all the music in the show works super well... even the dumb latchkey kid rap. The designs are purestrain 80s OVA stuff (Yuri in particular just had that rear end in a top hat Guy vibe) and I realized while watching that I was invested in so many of the fights because the animation doesn't drop to c-list levels of repetition or simplicity. Did they have a production manager in charge of fight choreo?

Fourth wall breaking is pretty much Tezuka’s MO, like his most dramatic stuff like Ode to Kirihoto (really good read btw) but Dororo has a few and Buddha had tons of them iirc.
