(Mordax Data) it has an oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, spectrograph, tuner, wave output (dual OSC'S), clock output (4 outputs) and a voltage monitor it's in Oscilloscope mode in the vid |

I'm trying to make a happy pop song but it's a bit tricky! I especially have a hard time with drums - both with composing cool beats, and with making my ideas into reality in a daw. I used to do stuff like this, where you create loops by clicking notes into existence with programs like LMMS. My issue with this system, is that the results come across as somewhat sterile & bland, because the volume and timing is always perfectly even. Plus, to make a 2 minute song, you either have to do a TON of clicking, or reuse the same beat over and over, which is not as interesting. So for my latest attempt, I'm experimenting with finger drumming in Ableton Live Lite. I can make a midi track, and link it to a drum kit, which maps like 12 drum instruments to keys on my midi keyboard. Then I can just hit the "record" button and jam away! But there are a few issues I have to work through: -It's tough to play "drums" in real time! Unlike with my technique described above for LMMS, I literally have to perform my drum pattern. -It is super obvious whenever I'm out of time. (I hear that you can use ableton functions to align your track closer to the beat, but I haven't done this yet) -I don't think my ancient-rear end midi keyboard is very well suited for this. The Casio CDP-100 is what I'm working with, and it seems to have pretty poor pressure sensitivity over midi, for whatever reason. Even when I play quietly, it sounds really loud. I've long considered getting a new keyboard, but have not yet done so, because choosing the right midi keyboard is an absolute boondoggle of a problem for my tiny brain to handle! Anyway, here is an example of something I was able to create with this technique. https://vocaroo.com/3XFdD8mXOJC

Okay, quantization saved my rear end! Here is my "happy pop song" loop which incorporates the finger drumming technique I mentioned in my last post https://soundcloud.com/user-934036962/coco-cloud-radical And here is a bonus short loop https://soundcloud.com/user-934036962/coco-cloud-menu These songs will soon be used in a video game

I finally sat down and spent some quality time fuckin around in Ableton. This is the result: https://soundcloud.com/king_dugga/kinda-technoish I mixed it for the headphones I was wearing but it sounds pretty different over my hifi. Maybe was too aggressive on compressing the bass line. Also I don't really know what I'm doing. I always used to get a bit weird feeling about using drum samples/loops for my drum track but I think I finally got over it by admitting I'm just really bad at sequencing drums, and I've got all these sample packs with Ableton, and you can just sub out kick or snare or whatever samples with others to totally change the sound without changing the beat. So yeah, like don't be dumb FP, use the tools you've got available. |

Listening to it on earbuds on my phone, I think the Moog needs to come up in the mix a little, and the kick drum wants some more punch. I've had this before where I make a track on my closed back Audio Technicas and then listen to it on speakers or earbuds and am like, where did all the bottom end go? |

It could probably still use some tweaking using the speakers as reference, but I'm not really sure where to start with that. |

i always like to reference mixes on multiple systems if i can - various headphones, speakers, in the car, etc. i also like listening at wildly different volumes, to see what stands out too much or isn't audible enough or whatever. it all just gives you a fuller picture of what your song sounds like. nothing in the mix sounds particularly egregious to me, Finger Prince. the kick could come up a little maybe, as you mentioned. heres a very compressed song i made recently https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gua9aUngzLw |

Digging the last two tracks.Finger Prince posted:I finally sat down and spent some quality time fuckin around in Ableton. This is the result: I just think drums are the boring part to compose and I never want to to take a deep dive into learning how to sequence. A lot of times I just try to find ways to make preset patterns on my keyboard sound interesting, or take the audio track of a simple loop and do a lot of cut/paste with it. Here's an album I just put out where I basically just did that: https://hairsablazin.bandcamp.com/album/legal-coffee Here's also my most recent track sort of in progress: https://soundcloud.com/onemoretimeago/stereo-in-five. The only feedback I've gotten on Reddit is "it sounds detuned" and "maybe listen to more music" lol. |

Drink-Mix Man posted:Digging the last two tracks. Hmm I kind of see what they mean, it does have a bit of a 45 played at 33 sort of sound. I love the bass line, and the balearic elements. The transition/breakdown at ~1:21 is kinda messy, but it segues nicely into the pads. I wonder if that section wouldn't be better as a buildup to the pads rather than a hard break. Oh and the bass line kinda gets lost in the other elements as the song fills in, maybe there's a way to keep it in the mix more, like brighten it up a bit, or pan it a bit, or something? That's super good! I really like it, it sounds very 16 bit post apocalyptic. I was thinking of putting my tracks up on YouTube, but don't know what to do for the visual. But I could probably just do what you did here, use an appropriate still photo. |
