Six pounds isn’t a lot. Half‐inch plywood will hold that easily if you get thread engagement. If the screws are too long and the plywood falls in the unthreaded portion of the shank, that’s when you have a problem.

They're threaded all the way up, so that shouldn't be a problem: Amusingly, they're Robertson heads, so this will be one of the few times in my life I'll get to use a square bit!

If I have an image of an actor/actress in my mind but cannot recall what movie I remember them from, what is out there that would help me? I remember an actress from the 00's/10's but for the life of me cannot think of what they were in and I'm usually pretty good at using clues to help me solve stuff like this. Edit: Not a porn thing, I just hate not being able to remember or find things and they get stuck in my head

Why are companies that sell power tools / electronics so desperate for me to register the item? They'll add a year of warranty, or offer a chance to get my purchase price refunded, if only I'll take 5 minutes to input my name, model number, and Amazon order number of what I bought into their website. Shouldn't they have all that information from when I bought the item?
|
# ? Oct 26, 2020 20:33 |

It's their standard warranty but if you don't register it they get to cut you off earlier than they would. The item is usually expected to die right after that "extended" warranty period but this way if they had poo poo qc that day at the factory and it fails early theres a chance your screwed and have to buy a new one instead of them eating the cost of your replacement. Usually when this happens people bitch that they got screwed so it gets some bad pr. Meanwhile if someone gets a free replacement because of the extended warranty they offered they may get some good pr on an early failure

Shouldn't they have all that information from when I bought the item? No, the companies that make the tools/electronics do not get your personal purchase history from Amazon. Some items, power tools in particular, get more heavy use out of warranties than other household items. If you register your item they can get a more accurate purchase date and it's easier for them to resolve warranty issues or proactively do things like recall notices or try and upsell you on extended warranties. I don't know how relevant it is for power tools, but they also get a record of the original buyer, to whom the warranty applies, so that they can reject subsequent owners. At least with guitars, I see the original receipt included in the sale for this reason (obviously assuming they didn't register it).

My partner watches a lot of English Premier League, and they don't have spectators at the games. Instead, they play crowd noises along with the commentary. How do they synch the crowd sounds so quickly with what happens on the field? I just watched a keeper save the ball, accompanied by the appropriate "oohhhh" sounds. How is it synched?

Why isn't "Cerberus" pronounced with a hard k sound in English, as in "Kerberos" or "Charon"?

How crucial are log racks? I only want to burn a fire a few times a week for the atmosphere. Can I get away with buying those blister packs of firewood logs from the grocery store and keeping it outside on a table or something?

Keep the logs off the ground by resting them on some wood offcuts or 2 by fours or something. Drape a tarp over or plop it somewhere that’s sheltered from the elements. Building a firewood shelter could be a nice weekend project too.

The fact that the name "Kerberos" is also in use makes it a bit weird though (it's software).

There are multiple accepted romanizations of Cerberus, one of which (arguably more accurate in English) is Kerberos

I was going to stack them outside, but I just wasn't sure if I needed to get another log rack for outside.

Also a good idea is to not stack directly against your home, as this can damage paint, create moisture, and in my experience, creates a ready home for creatures. My dogs ended up murdering the hell out of a possum that took refuge in ours. Mice, etc also love it as habitat.

Well noted. Thank you! On a related note, are those tiny bundles of firewood from big box stores like Home Depot or Kroger worth a drat? I do have some people that sell seasoned firewood locally, but the ones who deliver only come out for 1/4 cords at the minimum, and I don't want to start off by buying that much.

Bioshuffle posted:Well noted. Thank you! On a related note, are those tiny bundles of firewood from big box stores like Home Depot or Kroger worth a drat? grocery store bundles are fine, they are usually kiln dried so they will burn pretty reliably but some are very lightweight woods that burn way too fast getting a 1/4 or 1/3 cord of wood from some guy on craigslist can vary too though, i've had some supposedly seasoned wood turn out to be pretty hissy (moist) and hard to light. But in general if you find good seasoned wood it will do you better than kiln dried grocery store stuff. A good compromise could be going to a local (non-chain) nursery or landscaping supply store. They often sell bulk seasoned firewood in varying quantities, like an armful, a wheel barrow full, a pallet full, a 1/3 cord, maybe even full cord. That way you can also try out their supply before you get a huge quantity. IME a 1/3 cord will easily last the casual fire-haver through the fall and winter and probably leave you with a bit left over for some outdoor fires next spring and summer.

Apparently the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy is called Sagittarius a*. Why does it have that name? It can't part of a Sagittarius constellation since it isn't a visible black star. Why do astronomers insist on spelling it with an asterisk?
|

It's kind of silly. The astrophysicist who first observed it said it was "exciting", and excited states of atoms are denoted with asterisks in physics notation.

Strictly speaking Sagittarius A* is the radio source presumably caused by the supermassive black hole. But yeah it is named after the constellation it appears in, even though it’s not a visible member, it’s a common practice for naming a lot of things
