I've long thought that Seth is the only person in late night that was actually saying anything with barbs instead of trying to comedy around poo poo, but Amber Ruffin might feel like the best new host I've seen in a long rear end time. I bit on more than a few jokes and the fact that she's rolling with this minus an audience is kinda impressive.

I ADORE that she's going for basically "Conan back in the day but just the fun bits" instead of just doing the inevitable interviews that will come in. Putting comedy first makes me happy, though that's a LOT of heavy lifting. Still, the angle is something important and I am very sad this isn't actually on network TV.

He has embraced quarantinehead, as have I. My hair's never been this long, and I hate everything about it but what I can do when I goof around in front of the mirror after I get out of the shower for probably like five minutes longer than I should.

I'm getting super old now and it's all just falling out everywhere or greying and getting like one tiny strand tickling my eye that I can't see and I just have so much more respect for a woman's stoicism in the face of all this bullshit. I dunno, guys, I think I kinda "get" how hard childbirth must be for them now. It's a struggle, I think I see that for the first time. Well, we're all in this together now, sisters.

Give it a little time, this is definitely a trial run for her to take Late Night when Seth moves on to take over for Lorne.

I don't know, but I was glad he got bumped last week. That was the night that the Kentucky AG said killing black women in their sleep was totally sweet and legal, so some of the shows scrambled to change their interviews. I haven't heard from him much lately.

Edit: Southern states are all the same anyway.

Colbert will be live on Wednesday, following the VP debate. And on Wednesday, Seth has David Remnick, so maybe hopefully we get another installment of Live Action New Yorker Cartoons with the Late Night Players? Kimmel is off again on Monday and has a Friday show this week, with Game Night primetime specials on Tuesday and maybe Thursday or Friday? Depends on how the finals proceed. I’m not a sports fan so I’ll update when more info is available. Conan is off again, which is understandable. He did three weeks in a row, I wouldn’t expect him to take off any less than a month after such a grueling workload.

drat Colbert, Kimmel and evening Seth are killing it on guests this week. Makes Fallon look really bad, which evidently there might be big problems there. Rumors are that NBC is increasingly unhappy with the numbers from the show and since the pandemic his streaming numbers which used to be something that helped keep heat off of him before has greatly fell while everyone else has risen. His contract is up in a year and NBC is starting to put feelers out for potential replacements. Also NBC is looking to handle the show without Lorne which is also very interesting.

Yeah, I'd be interested in a source on this, as well, since Lorne is basically the God King of NBC late-night television, and Hollywood Video produces SNL, The Tonight Show and Late Night. Fallon's ratings have been rocky for a few years but Lorne has NBC by the balls and the last I read, that hasn't changed at all.

Edit: I know Fallon's contract is up in November 2021. Kimmel is, weirdly enough, trouncing both Colbert and Fallon in viewership.

I don’t think it has been talked about in any media yet. There are plenty of people in comedy that are talking about it though. I know of two people that have had NBC feelers in recent weeks.

It is the worst kept secret that Lorne has been grooming Seth to take over his position at SNL. It is why they have been starting to groom Amber Ruffin to take over Late Night. The word is Lorne is looking to retire next year, which normally I wouldn’t put a ton of faith in since you hear that every 5 or so years but there are a lot of things lining up with that which make it seem more likely than in the past.

It is also no secret that NBC is not happy with Lorne having control over their late night programming. His production company reaps the lions share of profit from all three programs. The Tonight Show was a massive cash cow for them in the Carson and Leno days and they get a much smaller cut of the pie with Lorne. They want to get back to a situation where they own the show and have more of a voice in how things are done which has not been the case with Fallon. They have not been happy with many aspects of the show for awhile but are mostly powerless to do much due to it being ran by Lorne.

The current idea at least is getting someone younger and edgier to host. Basically taking the Letterman/Conan strategy. The view is that 10:30 is not what it was even 20 years ago and they want something that is a little dangerous and can draw in a younger audience that will stay and grow over the years. Also they want to do the show in LA again because they feel like Kimmel has that advantage because he is there and they are missing guests.

This all is from what I have heard from a lot of people in both comedy and the management side of entertainment. The idea is they would want to do some basic tests after the new year and test shows with the finalists in the Spring to announce the replacement by May.

Of course this all depends on who they can get interested in taking the gig and who they like best. There is also a chance that everyone sucks and they keep Fallon out of lack of options but as of right now the view is he is likely gone no matter what even if they have to drag the corpse of Carson out again.

That’s all I know right now. Like I said it is purely rumor and speculation right now. There is a lot of smoke. For example NBC would have extended Fallon quite some time ago if he was staying.
