The vacuum effect means that unless you kill all feral cats at once, populations will migrate and expand to fill the vacuum you just left by killing one. Best bet is to catch, neuter and release dominant individuals, afaik.

I saw a dude wearing a turban driving a little tractor pulling the trailer that carries shopping trolleys and immediately thought of NVJ.

NPR Journalizard posted:I had this argument a while back and lost. It seems like a good idea, but it really doesnt help much. I'd say there is a need for both - like obviously neutering, especially males, will do more to reduce numbers long term but you also need to consider cats close to areas with particularly vulnerable wildlife. There regular shooting is the best option because unlike baits it targets the specific species you're trying to control. e: Just to clarify I don't like animals suffering unnecessarily either but yeah, feral cats are a bloody menace to a lot of Australian wildlife so needs to be controlled. Wherever there are better methods than killing them to reduce the population I'm all in favour of that too. Stoner Sloth fucked around with this message at 10:13 on Oct 28, 2020 |

The little bastard has never been outside in his life and the hardest he's ever had to work for a meal is to meow at me when it's dinnertime, but every time he sees a bird through the window you can see him thinking about murder and I have no doubt he'd demolish everything in a 2 mile radius if given the chance. And yeah I'm totally on board with massacring feral cats. Like, straight up feral cat genocide. Humanely, but yeah they gotta go. They're just too destructive to the environment and all domestic pet cats should require neutering or spaying by law to own them, so if they do get out, their wildlife murder is at least limited to the individual animal and doesn't result in more generations of murderers. Cats should also be kept indoors for obvious reasons.

I think a lot of people see their cat lazing around 16 hours a day and underestimate how much of a murder machine they are.

Every loving morning when I'm still kinda half asleep I make a coffee and without fail he zooms out of nowhere and has a playful swipe at my ankle like he's trying to knock me over. Sometimes I trip. I know he's just playing, but I also know if better not get too slow either.

My cat is only ever inside and I know if she got out she would be a menace. She eats so many geckos that she’s constantly got worms and drags her arse around. It’s loving gross.

I tried some pig shooting from choppers and that was AMAZING fun, hanging out the side reminded me of my time doing aerial photographer, except I wasn't making pew pew sounds.

Good luck ever eradicating feral species. At Tidbinbilla sanctuary even with electric fences, trenches and floppy top fencing, they still call in professional exterminators every quarter, and the amount of ferals they kill is huge.

My cats don't leave the walled enclosed yard. I guess they are huge cowards. They go out for an hour a day and just sit around. One time a huge dog busted in and my huge Australian Mist, Holly, completely hosed it up and it bolted down the road while its owner chased after it, that'll teach him for not using a leash.
