During the deep of night, the Silver Mind remains silent, and the Dark is content to let you survive on your own, leaving you alone with your thoughts. You dream aimlessly through the gray of your worry. The chicken boy is there for a second or two, the brilliant red of his hair flopped over comb-like to one side. You try to reach out to touch it. He was smiling at you in the dark of a lamp-lit room whose shape you've already forgotten...

Your eyes are wet when you open them to the uneasy dawn.

THE THIRD DAY
ANXIETY: [ X ][20%]
HP: [ 14 / 18 ] [+4 HP healed]
FP: [ 12 / 14 ] [-2 FP lost to sleep]

You're up... you're awake. Hunger is present now, making itself known through the sting of your bowels, and Kwiat pecking at the stone of the room.

You roll over, already bright with worried thought. You had to explore. You had to eat. You had to think. You slump out of the room to go take a chilly bath under a stray waterfall, taking a drink for yourself and Kwiat, mindful of the red you saw far up river the day before.

ANXIETY: [ X ][ X ][30%]

Oh early, these gray days. With Kwiat watered, you walk back outside to a misty iron-blue dawn, passing by the skateboard with two fingers raised in greeting. You walk with your waking anxiety, trying to focus your thoughts on what you want to do today.

You were still in the holy valley. You had the south side you could choose to explore. Or you could take a longer walk north, and try to scout the north / east side of the valley. You could take the time over the next few weeks to dig into the mysteries of the holy land, or you could plot a course out of here and into the wilds as soon as possible. You weren't sure. You didn't know. All you could do was take it one day at as time, starting with a decision over what to do with the day ahead of you.

The Silver Mind was there, but it was very quiet, in recovery. The Dark was somewhere beyond, present but not paying attention unless it was dire.

So what should you do?

[It's a decision made with confidence, despite all word in the Blue Book suggesting the opposite for a 3rd Day strategy. Most players went directly to the grind, which had a usual 50/50 drop rate of a little food to get by with for each time segment spent.]

[But there was a lot to think about at each step. It depended on RNG so far, build, spawns, and goals. There had been unusual luck already. Kwiat having Shock was bad; it meant no vital eggs for a few days to a week. But she was healthy and stable with no lingering damage, since the bubblepods rolled a strong heal. On top of that, there was the good drop at the convenience store with the burger option, so hunger wasn't even a worry until tomorrow. Merkja was a mean draw, but she was Neutral/Hostile; hard to achieve on first meet. Deimos was the same. Usually it was Gell, with a low but equal chance for Deimos or Ana, unless Merkja had spawned; that meant Gell and Deimos swapped chances. Opening the MC&D story line this early was nice, and it was a guilty pleasure to be able to safely use a first-time Psycho option. Anxiety would be a real risk going forward now.]

[What that all added up to was a day spent on Hunting & Gathering. It gave the absolute minimum amount of XP for each time segment spent on it and had a higher risk of anxiety time loss, but what it did do over grinding was gather far more resources, with a chance for Events based on each area. It might be discovering treasure, encountering mysteries or entities, finding news about other locations, or map pieces. Grinding did that as well, but with far fewer types of encounters to trigger.]

[Hunting & Gathering was divided into its two parts. One checked against the Combat Skill modified by subclass - Ranger, Knight, and Beastlord got the best bonuses. Psychic, at least, had an appreciable if low chance to help with Hunting. Gathering checked against an array of Skills depending on subclass. Ranger, Druid, and Farmer had the best fits and results. Psychic helped irregularly as it did with Hunting, but it also had a good chance to pick up on weird or unusual plants to bring back.]

[It's queued up - from 6am to 6pm, Hunting & Gathering, 2 hours to each location of the Hideout, Holy Land, Field, Gem Mine, Flowering Forest, and the affordable big risk of the Crumbling City.]

Black August
Sep 28, 2003

Hunting & Gathering posted:

The weather is dry and warmer, but still heavily overcast. There's the promise of rain later. The Sun is hidden, unable to see you.

You spend two hours each at the Hideout, Holy Land, Field, Gem Mine, Flowering Forest, and the Crumbling City. Nothing extraordinary happens. Your hunting goes well (16 - [2]+[2]+[6] = 10), and your gathering does too (10 - [1]+[2]+[3] = 6). The Silver Mind doesn't help them a lot, but it does have a silver gleam back in your neurons. You relax a little knowing it's returning to strength.

It went so-so in the Hideout. You were anxious to be out of there, but did your best. You hunted a lot of small eyeless waterfall lizards. You gathered some jade magic grasses and a single not-rotten tiny apple.
It went poorly in the Holy Land. It still made you feel creeped out, and there really just didn't seem to be much there. Well, ok. You did spend your time examining its Strange Pond with the midnight-sapphire waters. The foliage around it was vibrantly green-alive. You wanted a drink and to try nibbling some, but thought better of it. You did find some berries by the barren hill, though.
The Field provided trash cans to dig through out back. You dug around... ............and found some discarded old fries! You put them in your pack.
You passed by the outskirts the Gem Mines, and saw no real activity. You lucked into a little honey from a torn open dead hive.
The Flowering Forest went good, with a cluster of white sunflowers giving you seeds, as well as a few hand-sized beetles with blossom shells.
Finally, the Crumbling City. It ALMOST goes well for you. You manage to dig up a single NCB Ration before you're forced into an immediate time-waste retreat, since you were noticed, and risked a fight.

You were safe.
Time to head back.

OST: Lonely School

Event Log posted:

On the way back from the long day, you come into contact with a boar in the fields near the Holy Land. The boar is small, and looks lost, wounded, and malnourished. It's snorting steadily as it wanders aimlessly. It doesn't notice you come up on it from behind a tree. This gives you one free hit. You're going to-

* Awaken the darkness to induce painshock for an easy kill.
[!Darkness Check 13][-2 HP]

* Combine the Blade Majestueux + All-Out Attack (Deadly) for a risky slaughtering-strike.
[!Tyranny Check 14][-2 FP]

* Shoot the boar for an instant kill.
[-1 Bullet]

* Let the boar go.

You're gonna do it. Gonna do it. One hard strike. Right at the back ONE strike. You've done it with small game like when you were taught. Just a little bigger. One strike. One great cleaving motion. You grip the sword by both hands, and wait, wait, wait.

Wait.

Wait...

(!Tyranny 14 - [5]+[2]+[4] = 11 - Success!)
[Technique: The Blade Majestueux][+1d Damage]
[Maneuver: Deadly All-Out Attack][+1d Damage]
[5d - 20 Damage!!]

You make no sound after a long inhale, a single soft step, and then both hands clench the hilt tight as the stone sword arcs DOWN in an effort of supreme violence, red streaking the light as it passes. The pig simply shudders once with a soft wet noise as its body spasms, spine clove in two along with most of its torso.

You spend a long minute breathing before you pull out your sword from the still-jerking corpse. You look at the defeated animal.

(Disquiet 9 - [3]+[6]+[5] = 14 - Failure.)

You have to walk away, as the night begins to rapidly set in. You stare at a tree you lean on, while you pray that you never need to do that to Kwiat to survive. Your pack had a decent haul of things to sustain yourself on. But you got lucky wandering around. You estimate you had enough, starting tomorrow, for about 3 Days of food. You had to butcher the boar, and that'd give a few more days for sure, but... you... can't go through with that right now.

ANXIETY: [ X ][ X ][ X ][40%] [Disquiet]

You'll take it back so nothing will scavenge it, and thank God you were so close to the hideout. You stare at the wet blood across the concrete of your blade, and shiver from the oncoming cold of the dark. You hurry back - you needed to store the body and then start to determine how to use your last few hours. You had to figure out a suitable permanent room, now that you knew the outside layout good enough for a start. Kwiat needed her roost, and you wanted a fire. Had to figure out a way to have a fire without attracting attention from smoke.

You store the boar on the floor by wrapping it in another cut length of curtain-cloth. That way it'd stay masked and soak up the gore, which you hide. Mmmm̸m̶mm you LOVE tearing your nails off with your teeth it felt good. Helped helped helped.

Kwiat was alive and warm, and you feed and water her immediately. You had to think of a gravity feeder and waterfall adjacency to set up for her while you were away. Bringing her with you was an option, but a VERY dangerous one for emergencies. You lie down and pet her. You can't do this. You just want to sleep here now with her.

You get up and search more of the stone halls.

(Perception 10 - [6]+[2]+[1] = 9 - Success.)

The Silver Mind has something to say but not now no not now no not now. You wanted to be alone to race after your thoughts of boar sword gore. Bang bang face. Scars on the heart. You start to shuffle and race around as though you were chasing someone, gun out and eyes flickering under the shadows. You couldn't SEE in the dark, but the Tyrant let you know the shape and motion of what was around you, if you focused on it.

Soon, you manage to find your way on to the roof from a ladder access in a far back collapsed hall you hadn't found yet. It was right on the line of the waterfall bisection. The overgrown roof muffled your footsteps in the near, with the roar of the water silencing all else. You were hidden from view down below, only visible if someone was on the hill directly above you, or coming from the other side of the irregular-height roof.

It's a nice spot to feel safe in. But you feel even safer when you walk to the edge, and notice it drops down one one side, a tiny corner where it bisected into the wall, leaving a single door.

You leap down and peek inside - it made you forget your tension for just a second. The room had a good setup. It was bisected across one corner by the rock of the hill and waterfall. The rock revealed one strong current of water flowing out from it, which continued on through a crack in the floor. Built-in shower and sink! The rest of the room was barren stone, but what won you was that one of the walls had a significant break in it, revealing that it just barely peeked out into the difficult space behind the waterfall, making it ideal for smoke to be hidden in. You feel a little less tense.

ANXIETY: [ X ][ X ][30%] [Disquiet]

Ok. Alright. Alright. Things weren't really good. At all. But you had a new true hidey hole to build into now, along with some food to last you until the next disaster set you back, and Kwiat could have a nest! You needed to go hug her, right now. You wanted to hide under the warm shredded curtain-blankets. You hate this. You hate the boar bleeding a MESS through the curtains onto the floor and if something powerful smelled blood it'd want to steal it and then it'd smell Kwiat and murder her too take her too.

You had to get to bed. It was very dark out now. It was time to hide now.

Excited, but riddled with doubt and worry, you rush to hide inside of the room with Kwiat. You tell her all about the day as you protectively hold her, before quickly tucking into your nest-bed to spend a long hour listening to the darkness. Waiting for footsteps. Hand by your gun.

...

(Disquiet 9 - [1]+[5]+[2] = 8 - Success!)

Nothing... and you're getting sleepy. You could sleep. You could just shiver and shake and pass out, managing to grab that little dream string which sometimes would flit by for just a minute or so. If you failed to grab it, you'd fall back into your own body with a CRASH, startled awake for another two or four hours.

But this time, you caught the string.

You dream strangely, with your colours present but silent across your worried mind...

You passed by the outskirts the Holy Land, and it went great when saw no real activity. It still made you feel creeped out, and there really just didn't seem to be much there... until you find the strangest thing. A single-stall bathroom, tucked between some trees on the southwest side. It's made entirely of copper and plastic. The water is sapphire. The sand is topaz.

While exploring around the lake, you pass by a little table next to the sapphire waters. It has two chairs, and in one seat was a huge white chicken feather. Longing and loneliness wrack your heart as you stare at it.

The Holy Land went badly. It still made you feel creeped out, and there really just didn't seem to be much there. While exploring the northwest, you felt something bump into you hard enough to make you fall over, but nothing was there. It kept happening, hurting you until you escaped. The water is sapphire. The sand is topaz.

Finally, the Holy Land. It goes so-so. It still made you feel creeped out, and there really just didn't seem to be much there. You found an edible herb plant. The water is sapphire. The sand is topaz. The jungle is emerald.

Listen.
Listen to me.
There is a silver thread laced through the sky that your mind can now see.

You're hallucinating - some of this. Your body is on its first adjustment to your new neuronic additions. You're too far gone to understand, and why would you, being what you are? Calm down. Walk with me. Listen to the pace of my voice and the measure of my breathing.

I don't want you to think about the danger ahead. I don't want you to think about the changing of the landscape. I don't want you to think about the Lords.

"If you're serious about understanding this Art, then I want you to think of what brings you back to the other extreme. A way to ground yourself at center - the Silver. Remember? Find your feet, breathe-"

You knew, you tell him. You were just anxious about Mom leaving again. She was the one who had to deal with the cults.

"That's not thinking about your other extreme."

under a tree shaking and holding on for dear life, throat and nose dry but eyes constantly weeping
everything a chittering swirl, land land land alive

you stumble and run across the shadowy Holy Land, over and over and over again, screaming or laughing when you smash into a phantom and tumble over limply

when you look up from face roughed into coldgrass, you see it

The Silver Mind posted:

You see a tourmaline lake overflowing with tropic foliage, an ocean microcosm at the heart of the town. On the topaz shore was a sturdy table with dense cloth, and two comfortable chairs. Over them was a careful arrangement of glassy umbrellas floating to steer off the rain, all tethered with unseen silk; both made in the Airforge as a summer project. Its crowning touch was a cloud of little firefly lights, solar nanobots salvaged from one of the trades with Vermillion.

Despite the restaurant being a solid minute walk away, this was its premiere table reserved for serious private meetings, or special nights for couples. It helped if your Mom had a cuzzy who owned the place.

crawling across the ground, everything perfectly lit under a null sky without star sun moon cloud, ears roaring with a sound like rain - you rise back up into an uneasy awareness, dreamy-calm in your unhappy confusion.

you can't stand up. too weak. you'd be scared but the grass was too soft to feel it. you were hiding in it, buried in it, unseen and devoted to the journey to the chairs. your elbows help you out of your vertigo as you drag yourself up onto the table- and there, on the left chair, was a single bright white feather.

hushed. longing. lonely.
you drag yourself at long last,
into the seat across from it.

Aitvaras was toying with his glass of wine, bright with the ruby of the New Cadanza vintage. Although you had made up already, he still wanted to have a formal apology dinner. You talk at length over your shared concerns - the dreams, Kaigen, all the news of the Megaliths, the Fae incursions - and eventually you lull into talk of each other, eager to know what had happened while apart. He asks what you learned from the old tree guy. You tell him __҉_ and he nods, agreeing that it was difficult to wrap your head around. You ask him about how he feels now about his new unexpected job. He admits that his new role in the town guard was going great, a motley little crew under the Emperor's tutelage. He's come so far. You say it slowly, soft, so he understands: You Are Proud. His understanding gets you what you want more than anything- right there!

That smile like the Sun.

[Just when the day looks like it's over, and maybe the problem of entering a location before nightfall could be addressed, something goes seriously wrong.]

[After paging through the pop-ups for Hunting & Gathering, and being forced to blind-select from blank or glitch-obscured options, the very last one lands on an especially unfair Holy Land event - a handful of minor bosses that could spawn from rare bad results. Only this time, it didn't spawn ANY of the usual bosses. It did something a lot worse.]

[It spawned Jandou Joe - a miniboss, and the weakest of the Ultramutants. That was bad since Joe was meant to be fought all the way over in Jandoubi of the Ocean Megalith area, and while players reaching him found him a hefty roadbump there, at Level 4 he was officially a nightmare.]

[This was going to take a lot of effort.]

! BOSS FIGHT !
OST: War In Hell

BOSS FIGHT LOG posted:

What do you know? It's Jandou Joe!

You have a bad feeling about this...
Jandou Joe was taken by surprise!
You move first.

[Passive] The Silver Mind's reflection reveals foresight.

'The favorite Ultramutant of the Jandoubi Backup, and the mascot for the city. He's a weaker first generation of the Ultramutants, using the genetic databases of insects, crustaceans, and other aquatic creatures. Despite his carapace and bulk, he moves with frightening speed over any wet surface or through liquid. He enjoys pinning prey to flense the torso.'

* He's an Ultramutant.
* He has Strong ST, Lightning DX, Idiot IQ, Tough HT, Average WL, Ignorant PE.
* His Defense is Evasive.
* His DR is 7.
* He's Immune [x0] to Water.
* He's Weak [x2] to Magic.
* Techniques: [Long Touch] - [Water Magics] - [Flying 8 Tackle] - [Oh No It's Jandou Joe]

You're feeling funky...

You rush over the rainy concrete, feet splashing as you come in for a very direct, focused stab, forsaking defense. Your blade leaves red light in its wake.

[TECHNIQUE: Blade Majestueux]
[ALL-OUT ATTACK: Determined - +6 To-Hit]

(14 or less - [6]+[3]+[5] = 14)

You BARELY hit the Ultramutant, who skeets over the wet ground quickly. Your sword smashes into the crackly carapace, dealing 4 damage! Not a lot, even with all that force.

The round ends.
Jandou Joe now goes first!

Jandou Joe uses [Flying 8 Tackle], skeeting into the air to pin you with 8 legs of crushing force!

(14 or less [Grapple] - [1]+[3]+[6] = 10)
(10 or less [Break Grapple] - [2]+[2]+[6] = 10)

But you manage to avoid the spindly legs at the last second.
You take a moment to assess, circling in the dark overgrowth of the rain-flooded corridor...

Looks like it was a rough draw on the wrongly-generated boss. But there's a chance of victory! After reading the fight menu tutorial, what should you do?

Just You, Me, And Jandou Joe

Manual posted:

Boss fights have a number of options to select.

* Fight is the basic option. It attempts to attack an enemy in range with a melee weapon, or shoot them with a gun. There are numerous fighting options, such as All-Out Attack, Feverish Defense, Grappling, and so forth.

* Tech allows you to use a Technique you've learned, often in conjunction with a Fight option.

* Skill allows you to use one of your Skills or Powers.

* Item allows you to access your inventory.

* Run! is rarely effective, but often necessary. You'll try to escape and hide.

* Other is a wildcard option - it will often present situational or unique options, or will try to randomly affect the situation with a non-standard action (like pointing and shouting "OVER THERE!").

Voting will end sometime tomorrow around noon.

Oh, and the character sheet has been updated with new information.

If Joe is kind of a dummy then it stands to reason that the best way to exploit his weaknesses is to do smart stuff. Which is going to go great for us, a shroom-brained psychic with a gunshot trepanation, but we're not made of a big book of bugs and have the power of ape brain, lizard brain and fungus brain intellect on our side.
