my point was that Keir will quietly restore the whip in a few weeks rather than actually following through on expelling Corbyn and risking any of the SCG following him out the door

I expect you’re right, it it does beg the question of what has been achieved through the suspension (besides giving the right wind press a joygasm). Driving out more of the left wing of the party but at the cost of leftists ever wanting to work with Labour again?

Seriouspost: I've done a lot of soul searching this year about whether to resign, there's a whole bunch of poo poo I very nearly resigned over. In the end, it was the very excellent work Momentum is doing atm that kept me in. Momentum is by far the biggest & most influential socialist organisation in the UK atm, & as of right now still requires Labour membership to join, so although we here itt all know that the Labour Party (& electoral politics more generally) are hosed beyond repair, staying a member in order support Momentum remains (imo) the best route to forming a strong, united movement, leading us eventually (hopefully soon) out of the Party & onto the streets. Also, a successful socialist movement still relies on an electoral presence, in combination with a wider street movement, & right this very minute we only have the former in the SCG.

This is an immediate, half-baked opinion, & may change. Will do fairly loving quickly if a Momentum/SCG split-off happens.

Going back a little bit, but Momentum's slate of 6 for the NEC includes 2 noted transphobes. gently caress Momentum.

Thought about todays fuckery a lot. Here's my opinion.

SCG needs to form its own unit. Affiliated with Labour ala co-op, but more than happy to vote along its own lines.
Unions, ideally would fund SCG directly and leave rest of Labour to fund itself.

This means SCG maintains influence, but could vote independently of labour. Essentially baked in C+S process. Would also mean when the Labour ship starts sinking the SCG could hoover up new members, build its own parallel structures etc.

I worry a clean break would just give the media carte blanche to ignore SCG from here on out. the attention they gave CUKTIG and UKIP was purely because the media felt it was advantageous for their own interests to do so. No way they'd give a breakaway socialist group half as much attention as they'd give the new SDP or new NSDAP.

the difference between Labour of the 80s and Labour of today is that even though Kinnock expelled Militant and clamped down on the likes of Tony Benn and Ken Livingstone, there were still a significant amount of actual social democrats (the 'soft left' as they were known - folks like Bryan Gould, Robin Cook, and at one point David Blunkett) who acted as an ideological buttress to straight-up neoliberals like Mandelson, Brown, Smith, and Blair

there is no such ideological buttress today, because the Overton Window shifted so far to the right in the past three decades that any actual social democrats in the Labour Party fell into the Corbyn camp, and unless they pledge their fealty to Starmer, they will be purged just as quickly as any actual Labour leftists

We went out for lunch and then we stopped for some bubble tea.
read the entire report. funniest thing is that all of the evidence before the social media section (except livingstone and pam) other than one were because leadership suspended (and the report states they're unsure whether LOTO asked for complaints to be sent to them) or that penalties were increased because of social media outcry

big theme of it is that before feb 2018 complaints were completely ignored, then they started getting looked at, up and running but not good enough. wow!

frankly unsure most of this should be published publically.

Personally can't wait to be lectured on the virtues and necessity of voting by all the people that crushed any faith in our political system. Luckily I left the Labour party so at least I'm not paying for the privilige of being abused and humiliated. I think once the anger passes it's going to be pretty liberating just not to care about politics anymore.
