My grim silver lining if this poo poo is that (in my mind at least) it speeds the disintegration of the UK and perhaps prompts a successful border poll over here. Not much help to anyone in England unfortunately, although it's not like being shot of us would be a hindrance.

Wasn't expecting that take from momentum. It's.... interesting. I'd have expected given that they've already made it clear their work is better done outside labour they'd not hold back but this is probably a smarter approach. e: The interesting thing as well about the support for suspending corbyn is that if anything it puts Lab in a *worse* situation: If Corbyn appeals, and it looks like they were on shaky ground in pulling him, they will now have to put him back on the benches against popular opinion.

Drone_Fragger posted:This cesspool politics is entirely caused by FPTP and the sooner the country realises that the better. there might be scope for LAB embracing PR there... hear me out just in July CLPD and Momentum were vigorously dismayed by the transition of Labour NEC elections from FPTP to STV (because it would prevent all-left winner-take-all slate wins). This, by the way, after a string of losses where all-left slates were defeated the CLPD has never quite given up on the idea of a socialist majority-of-a-majority that allows a politics of maybe 20% of society to command a parliament. So, it disapproves, and conversely Labour First thinks the reverse. I have a sneaking suspicion that this may be one of those political battles with unforeseen consequences however - entrenching STV as a internal party mechanic essentially guarantees some left-wing presence in key committees in the long term, which may (eventually) have interesting impacts on LAB. The rival factions don't really have good ways to whip their slates and have always relied on the landslide effect to suppress factional rebellion. With STV that's no longer reliable and the practice of picking unimportant local councillors and junior activists may soon backfire - it would need to be someone with some stake in the faction. This would escalate the visibility of NEC battles over time, akin to leadership elections today - essentially as a kind of pre-emptive PR for the longstanding soc/demsoc/socdem splits, albeit one where the factions are locked into coalitioning only with each other. At that point, actual PR may be a lot easier to contemplate for CON the question is whether it wants something from its Scottish minority, rather than nothing, I suppose - with the right set of constituency shifts it could morph into something not anathema to the party ronya fucked around with this message at 22:40 on Oct 29, 2020 |
