They keep stealing and loving up perfectly useful and valuable terms, like virtue signalling and performative and LARPing and triggered It's cultural appropriation, that's what it is

People have been describing any blatant Trump falsehood as gaslighting for years now. Here’s a comic about it from two years ago: https://mobile.twitter.com/rubenbolling/status/1055382205025918976?lang=en

I have to know. What is the context of an ersatz Bluesmobile stealing a coffin while a wrestler rides on top of the casket?

The k-word in the first ingredient is equivalent to the n-word. People use magrut/makrut or Thai lime instead.

I don't doubt what you are saying is true, but I have to say that currently I see/hear that term all the time in reference and have never heard them called Thai Lime leaves or anything similar until now.

I think they just spelled it wrong. The drink is spelled "kefir". The slur is spelled the way it's spelled in the tweet. Unless it actually is a leaf, then I have no idea what the hell that tweet is referring to.

I hadn't heard it either until last year but it's been around a long time and there's only been pushback in the last 20~ years. It's definitely something that anyone involved in that account should at least have heard of.

I definitely won't use the term anymore now that I am aware but I feel like in US food writing I still see it all the time. Glad to know but I guess regionally a lot of people could still be totally ignorant still. I am gonna check because I feel like I've seen it written that way at the store before too.

The slur is pretty specific to South Africa, for what it’s worth, so the rest of the world using it to refer to a lime that is also called that isn’t necessarily out of terrible racist ignorance and more that it’s just not the same word to them.

SneezeOfTheDecade posted:I have to know. What is the context of an ersatz Bluesmobile stealing a coffin while a wrestler rides on top of the casket? Well, you see, the wrestler is a bastard and his mama said so. So Big Boss Man decided to drag away his father's coffin while they were at a funeral. As for why he had the Blues Mobile? Look we don't think about that.

You guys have never heard of a kaffir lime? I mean, you should specify you're talking about the type of lime specifically but it is the name for them. There's been some half hearted movement to change the name but AFAIK it's still what it's called. E;fb

Son of Thunderbeast posted:Wonder if you would've felt the same way about Brazil nuts way back when the alternative name was more widely accepted The etymology is disputed on this one but yeah it's safe to say we should change the term we generally use for them in English. I think makrut is good but there's other alternatives. They're not as much in use as Brazil nuts are and the slur is less well known in the wider English speaking world so it'll take a while but we should still do it.
