the word boba apparently comes from 80s chinese slang for 'big tits' because the tapioca balls are, uh, spherical. in taiwan (i live here) it's pretty interchangeably referred to as bubble tea or milk tea with pearl

yeah i first heard of it when i was in taiwan and hong kong in the early 2000s and it was just called bubble tea (or milk tea w/ pearl as yugioh said). i could have missed people calling it boba or something but the first i heard that term was people in the US saying it so I kind of assumed they heard somebody saying 'bubble' with an accent and just went with it. i'm probably wrong, i guess it doesn't really matter
