It has become a little annual tradition that all the local stoners spend a day in the brook once a year, dragging out all the crap that accumulates there. The woodlands is the very definition of a community project (much to the annoyance of the council). Earlier this year we sent over 200 statements from local people (statements, not signatures) to the Parish Council stating how much the woodlands means to them and their families, what they have each put into it and what they get out of it. At the same time we did a FOI request to find out the terms of trusteeship, and it transpired that it was always "for the use and recreation of the village community." This means for years when the council clerk has been saying the main complainant has "a reasonable point" and warning us that we might get told we can't do anything but walk in the woods, they could have just told her no, you're wrong, gently caress off.

I swear if there is one thing local coucils hate, it is genuine local culture. You see it again and again, in city and village, if a group of local people do something unique an interesting, from art projects to skateparks, mucic scenes to woodland walks... the local council will dispise it, and do their best to turf everone out and develop the space into flats. Real culture is ofcourse when the council pays the brother of a councilors property-company, to redevelop the old corn exchange into glass an steel monstrosity of an arts-centre. Then pay another brother of a council member 70k a year to be the director, and the arts staff 17k a year to put on events, with miniscule budgets, with gratis tickets going to the council members ofcourse. That's cuture.

I think things went downhill with the council when one of the new members told me I could be legally notified that all activity needed to cease in the woods and I laughed and said I'm just some oval office mate but it's lovely that you think I'm in charge in some way. The other people there chuckled, he definitely thought he was being made fun of, and he's loathed me ever since. It's fine. I'm an easy person to loathe. Edit: Actually, consider a man in his 30s who not only wants to be on a loving Parish Council but actively campaigns on a strong Tory platform and claimed to be "the only local councillor who can help get Brexit done." I want to be loathed by such a man.

Hope people don't mind but it might lift some spirits in these most horrible of times. At one point in the past few years the council wrote to one (single, elderly) woman giving her loads of poo poo about the woods and stating they had heard "many complaints, but little in support of the woods". That led to all the community statements and a friend of mine (knowing the council would read nothing we sent to them) made up a few images that us harder to ignore: Pond:  Work party waiting for veggie sausages to cook:  Maintaining the stream:  Cargo net:  Picnic area (with big and little tables):  If you know the area don't loving dox me you weirdo.

For some actual content, I was just on a train from Stansted (don't ask, I really had to fly somewhere) and I heard an elderly couple complaining about foreigners not speaking English. There were only like 2 groups speaking what I assume is Romanian in a fairly packed carriage ffs, and more to the point it's a loving train from the airport of course there might be foreigners on it. Really brought home I'm back in the UK again. I wonder if they spoke the local language wherever they flew in from. Just zero self-awareness. I always get weird questions in an afternoon that make me wonder if the people interviewing me know what they're on about or not.
