I was thinking about it earlier and someone who can redirect the GOPs racist tendencies elsewhere (probably using thinly-veiled antisemitism) while advocating for economic redistribution and keeping the religious social conservatism would definitely clean up in 2024

They're focused on by the elite because they lack the charisma to look at this world and enforce their will upon it with clear vision and leadership. Polls do not adequately describe reality when someone can whip together a crowd and impose their own will on reality through shared consensus. We're primed for that in America and the polls are not important to that process.

Trump won, but he's too crass and stupid and lazy to build that new consensus that enough people will share in. Bernie came around and the dems correctly identified him as a threat to the current consensus, which is a kind of gilded age neoliberalism. Bernie not only would have won, but he was a threat that could have very well remade the nation and taken us back to the old FDR days with democratic socialism. Something that has maybe a generation before its eroded by capitalism and that's if it entrenches, but it would have given us a better chance to blunt climate change. He was sabotaged by the neoliberal elite because with their final, dying breaths before fascism takes hold, the libs will gently caress over the left. The elites don't want to give up any power and would prefer to live on a rotting corpse of a nation rather than live in a healthy one where they make less money.

The powers that be like this system even though its undergoing a social collapse and that collapse is right now and its ongoing and will continue until we produce a new identity that redefines what it means to be an American or we rot until we eventually balkanize. The neoliberal consensus wants to preserve the status quo, but that's not possible because few people actually believe anymore. The fash are seeking a new shared identity through fascism, which means violence and death, but I don't think that they have the gas to pull it off because Trump is too incompetent and the fascists are mostly pretty old. So if Trump wins, we continue to rot for another four years. This changes if we get president Biden because Biden will give them four years to consolidate and build a national consensus by pumping out a new charismatic strongman. One who likely won't be incompetent and lazy and stupid. And this is while Biden sabotages the left. Trump would only embolden the left and create more, especially if he successfully steals the election.

The problem is that the neoliberals continually smother not only any political movements, but any identitarian movements from the left and offer no new identity because they're basically incapable of creation of identity. It's just not in them. They're way, way too close to what most of us consider conservative and conservatives do not generate new ideas, nor can they take us backwards with fascism. All they know how to do is to manage the decline. The fash have a playbook for generating identity. It's lovely and ugly and horrible, but it works in generating national identity if not vigorously resisted. It's basically through a kind of blood sacrifice to murder those who they hate and violate their orthodoxy, thereby brute forcing a national identity. And my greatest fear is that Biden will win and give a new, competent, polished fascist time to emerge from the chaos that is the fascist movement. If Biden wins I'm 100% preparing to leave the country because I won't want to be here for what comes next because I have four years to get the gently caress out and move to somewhere sane, but the list is small because fascism tends to spread during these times because neoliberalism is a global phenomenon and fascism will feast on its corpse before they themselves become neoliberals again in future. Perhaps neoliberalism with newer, uglier characteristics, most likely made real by big data as we head deeper into a cyberpunk future.

As much as we hate Trump, we will hate Biden more and he will set the table for another fascist just like Obama set the table for Trump. And not only will you hate this unnamed fascist, but he will hate you and you'll be on the list of people to purge.
