What the car cannot do as yet is make left & right hand turns, which should be available in a few releases.

On my Model 3, with FSD hardware (but without the new software), the UI allows you to do exactly that.

I can tell the Tesla, "navigate to 123 xyz street" and it will create a route. Then I can activate "Navigate on Autopilot" and it will drive by itself. There are currently two limitations:

1. It's cautious at stops and traffic lights. It will stop at the line and won't continue until the driver presses the accelerator.

2. On many side-streets, Autopilot will disengage and force the driver to take over. This usually happens when the car can't follow street marking (e.g., a street where the lane divider is worn off).

In practice, I don't use Navigate on Autopilot except on highways. But I'm eager to try the new software when it's available.

In theory, the new software will decrease the number of times the driver will have to intervene. Will it ever get to 0% intervention on 100% of routes? Probably not, but even Waymo isn't there yet and they're already charging for robotaxis. They deal with interventions by having a remote driver take over. Tesla will eventually have to do the same, but only if they get the intervention rate down to a low-enough rate.

...

His beta release just shows you his next card. The pot grows or it doesn’t. IF, it’s a big “if”, I am Elon FSD funds itself in this game of poker. Winners get FSD. Everyone else goes home with their jaw hanging wide-open after Elon releases his hole card.

Isn’t Tesla fun?

on the sr-71 that was an intentional decision (vs. adding a ton of extra weight by having sealed fuel cells inside the wings), and the fuel it used was so nonflammable that it needed a special extra cylinder of pyrophoric triethylborane to start the engines. the biggest danger of leaking fuel everywhere was that the ground crew would slip in it.

the shuttle was "oops, the o-rings aren't at all doing the job we intended, but they have failed in a way that they still work, we think. this is probably fine?"

anyway here are some cool sr-71 videos. this one shows the burst of green flame from the TEB ignitor. you can see it clearly when they start up in the hangar, and again in the takeoff if you look closely just as the afterburners light off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt4BYGiFws4

the sr-71 also had no internal engine starter, and its huge high-bypass turboramjets would have required an inordinate supply of compressed air to spool up. so instead they added a bevel gear drive to the bottom of each engine and made special start carts that would spin the engine core directly using a pair of buick wildcat V8s. rad as hell

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjdyQpEUYzI

and here is another one with a couple of good afterburner shots.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-PVmtJ0HpU

and finally a great interview with a pilot who explains what all the buttons do.

- All of the Buildroot maintainers/developers now have every engineer who is working on Starlink's email address lmao.

Everything is of an extreme build quality, and this works significantly better than I had ever imagined. It feels like it's from the future. Given a top-tier cell phone costs in the $1,000 range, I am completely amazed I have my hands on a setup like this for ~$500, so I am biased positively towards this service.

has it been deployed anywhere with clouds or rain yet? because "works passably under absolutely ideal conditions" is elon's sweet spot for product robustness

basically there's no one on the network yet, and nowhere near enough testers to cause congestion, so it works about as well as any satellite internet service, but with better latency.

i'm still curious how it handles hopping nodes, but apparently the answer is "well enough"

Combat Theory

America is largely in a techbro age when it comes to news coverage which is one step ahead of Germany where major news tech coverage is on a level with alchemy in the middle ages. At least the later one runs less risk of placing stupid ideas in aging heads with decision power.

Also today the youth organization of the CDU (German conservatives and the largest federal party) has presented results of their internal voting for the next party leader and decided with an absolute majority to support Friedrich Merz. The only topic that was actively mentioned by the leader of the youth faction was that he (Merz) supports a broad approach to future mobility involving hydrogen and synthetic fuels whereas the contenders still seem dialed in on the line of BEV or BUST. A policy that even China has rejected this year in favor of a broader approach to powertrain concepts. Political interventionism in engineering is such a thrill...

E: this reminds me that of the 12 classes and courses I had on powertrain design and thermodynamics back in university, at least 30 percent were involving politics. Europe is in such a weird age of individual mobility right now.

I get why, but it’s always funny when political youth orgs age out at 35 or 40.
