Is he nonbinary or genderqueer or something? He/they is very common for just about any masculine person, it only signifies you don't mind being called "they." Doesn't make you gay. I don't know anything about Willis or their personal life, but you gotta be a little deeper in than just gender neutral pronouns to be a queer creator IMHO.

i don't have his actual announcement about it handy because he wanted to say it quietly a few months back but it was about gender identity + i'm not going to be the sort of rear end in a top hat to say that someone isn't 'actually queer' b/c they didn't do enough in my eyes to appear queer. i'd recommend nobody else be that rear end in a top hat either!

also gender identity is different than sexuality so all you're doing by saying "doesn't make you gay" is showing how little you actually think about this subject yourself

Come to think of it, it's been a long time since I read It's Walky, but now that I know of all the baggage that Willis had about his mom and his upbringing, I now see the parallels with Walky's mom who founded the organization to fight aliens and steadily grew more controlling and manipulative (even resorting to mind-control I think?) only for it to turn out that she was being manipulated from the aliens from the start and the entire story of how she started the fight against the aliens was based on a lie.

And since it was written either during or right after Willis had his own personal growth to break from his parents' views of the world, I wonder if it's even more emotionally honest than in Dumbing of Age where Joyce's mother is a more of a boilerplate chud and he's writing this when he's older and more self-assured and financially independent.

Willis is a lot like Dan Shive, in that they’re both extremely idiosyncratic webcomics creators who can’t move away from the comic characters that have documented their personal growth.

I prefer Shive overall, even if every character has a very similar, weird, and very specific way of thinking, to the superhero drama and exaggerations Willis can’t stop indulging in even when it hurts the story.

It's fine.
Don't worry about it.
I'm not going to demand a detailed breakdown of someone's gender and sexual identities before I decide if they're writing of queer relationships or people is poorly. If it's obvious or they declare it, sure, it adds some context as they may be pulling from personal feelings or experiences, but throwing things out into the public will remove your writing choices from that personal context anyway and it's perfectly possible for something to look tired or even offensive to the large number of readers who won't have the full "context". This isn't to say it shouldn't be done, but it's good to be conscious of how your work might come off to a "blind" audience. Queer creators can write problematic stories, and some straight/cis writers are conscious enough to write decent queer stories, too.

I think it was only a subject because of the "real queer creators" comment, which directly ties the author's identity to the work.

I'm not making any judgments, I don't read his comic, and crucially I definitely wouldn't know if he were or not since I don't follow him, but I personally look for more than "is sometimes referred to with they/them pronouns" in my queer creators especially if they are broaching subjects in potentially problematic ways. Oh, and I'm not asking anyone to prove their queerness, I just think "he goes by he/they" is a lame justification in response to someone characterizing a nonbinary person in a gross way.

i dont know how to broach it and i dont think this thread is the right place for it (lol) but there def will likely be a long and exhausting art community discussion for years about how to intertwine and dissect and interpret queer identities in relations to a persons work. i find it extremely heartening and wonderful that the webcomics community is a place where people can truly, legitimately safely explore their identities (esp. trans identities) "publicly" before fully stepping out but in many ways the conversations we have about these works/the creators/the audiences/etc are still kind of wonky/accusatory/cruel/invasive because they're a very very very new area and HUGE because of the vastness of the internet. it will take some time for people to realize they are not entitled to know every details of a person's personal life and all the nuances of their complex inner turmoils. i hope this makes sense.

Yeah, I don't like categorizing people as "real queer creators" and I think that remark was out of line, especially when you're dealing with a fluid and ever-changing thing like societal and personal perceptions of gender or sexuality. Willis' stuff always felt like tinny melodrama to me no matter what his personal identity is, and I think that's more of a feature of his writing that some people either like or absolutely hate.

Mazerunner posted:

I miss it dearly... :(: I know the creator is going through a rough patch though, and I hope she feels better and up to continuing it because you can tell she has a lot of love for the characters and it comes through in the comic in delightful ways.

I don't know if it'll ever fully go away, especially when there's a powerful need for authentic queer stories, though as queer identities become more widely-accepted I suppose the issue will balance out a bit with time as people feel more comfortable and safe openly identifying in specific ways they may find terrifying or dangerous now.

a lot of my early broaches into the subject of gender via my art were uh, extremely hosed up to say the least, because I didn't know how little I knew about what I was talking about and/or I was still dealing with my own gender stuff I'm STILL dealing with my own gender stuff

I think criticism of gay representation should be done independently of how gay the writer is (or how gay you suspect them to be) because frankly you don't know, they might not know either

that said bad writing is bad writing, me being stupid at the time doesn't justify my own bad poo poo and being stupid now doesn't justify anyone else's bad poo poo

edit: that said because I will always take an opportunity to shill, my story's pretty gay but only kind of a webcomic, currently on hiatus and also not very fun, link is under avatar <<<

'Mage and Demon Queen' is a fun adventure in a gamified fantasy world about Malorie, a mage attempting to seduce the Demon Queen. To not be branded a traitor by the humans, she has to disguise her outings as 'heroic raids' on the demons' headquarters, and wear a demon-disguise while helping work for peace. Although it has themes of prejudice in human/demon relations, there's no sexual prejudice. Some characters are gay or trans, and it's not treated as anything exceptional.

Dumbing of Age rides off of Willis's previous career of collecting an audience and learning to be regular with updates if nothing else. It's not really a good gag comic, it's pretty garbage for a soap opera, and it's too surreal to be a slice of life.

I tried to get into DoA a couple times before because people who normally have a similar taste to me recommended it, but this was more or less my take away. It wants to be too many things, doesn't do any of them individually well, and blends them poorly enough that it feels less than the sum of its parts.
