That sounds ok but buying an expensive TV that's not OLED, is really fuckin' weird imo

I understand it in principle, since you can get a way bigger LCD for the price of an OLED, but I imagine people going that route probably haven't seen in person how big the quality difference truly is.

Idk I picked up that Sony 65” at Costco for $950 ~10 days ago and it’s insanely nice.

You were probably talking about WiFi, which I never really had any issues with (granted the AP was like 5 feet away), but now that I finished running Ethernet, plugged the TV and my ATV 4K in so I never have to think about bandwidth again. FYI the ATV4k is also 10/100mb, not gigabit.

The WiFi is better than the Ethernet port? It’s definitely gigabit and speed test for me gives around 950mbit/sec with no latency. I know ac band is theoretically faster but eh I think I’ll stick to wired in this case.

I haven't done any testing but I think I remember people complaining about it a long time ago, that the ethernet is 100/10 but the WiFi can handle gigabit?
|
# ? Nov 9, 2020 09:22 |

Well folks, I was wrong. It is gigabit according to the Apple specs page. I could have sworn it was 10/100 even on the 4K...I have 2 of them and I distinctly remember looking into the Ethernet ports being only 100mb. Am I going insane?

# ? Nov 9, 2020 10:14 |

Oh poo poo, I was also under the impression it was a slower Ethernet port for some reason. Oh well!

Usually a safe bet any apple product would be needlessly inferior as far as specs go. You just got unlucky

Target has this year's TCL 4-series at 65" for $229. I know they updated the 4/5/6 series this year and changed things up; any experiences with the 2020 4 series? I'm not much on 4K/HDR content; 99% of what we watch is plain 1080p content on Plex, and I have a normal PS4, not a Pro. Is it worth it to jump to the 5-series, or is the QLED and local dimming zones mostly not going to affect my non-4K-loving rear end?

With the 4 series you'll have more QC issues, viewing angle issues, contrast issues etc. They basically basement/bedroom/garage level TVS. That said... 65" for $229 is just drat near "buy and try" territory so I'd say just get it and see how you like it!

I'm a little torn because my current living room tv is a weird combination of old as poo poo but still really nice. It's a 50" Panasonic Viera plasma from like 2007, but one of the really high-end ones so it does still have a great picture. It's just too small for the new living room; the couch is a good 12 feet back from the TV now instead of like 4-5 feet. (not to mention I'd like a TV that uses less power than a microwave )

TV's having 32 local dimming zones never made sense to me. One 4K TV I saw included a 55" 1080p screen inside and used that for it's local dimming which meant 2,073,600 local dimming zones and I can't help wonder why no one else does that?

Eh, it's the same panel. I think it all comes down to the coatings on the outer glass because you see differences in reflection handling too.

Dual layer panels are a thing, but I'm guessing it's more expensive, needs a stronger backlight, and more QC issues than normal or everyone would be doing it.
