i don't want to play any game where it's overhead and the cursor turns into a sword when you click to attack on someone

or worse, you click on a picture of a sword in the UI bar at the bottom of your screen, so your cursor turns into a sword so you can click

It's really weird, I've still only ever heard of it on this forum, and in my circle of har-cor gaming friends, none of them know what it is. I get that here, on this forum, it's definitely overbearing the amount of praise it gets, but I feel like that's just because it's funny and well written, and this is a forum of people that were brought together by funny well-written articles.

Like Frog Fractions definitely seems way more 'The Rick and Morty of games' to me. But I'd never actually accuse it of that because even that is pretty drat niche outside SA. I think the two are incredibly similar, really. One could be the "spiritual successor" (HA!) of the other, and I think liking one probably does suggest you'll like the other.

I'm being mega super horrifically over-defensive of DE, I realise, and I get that this is contributing to the offputting "AHCKTUALLY" image it's getting. It's just it seems so odd that it's garnered any hate at all to me, it's so unassuming and basically likeable? It's like people hating on 'Over the Garden Wall' for being overhyped? Or like, "I'm never gonna watch Up, the fanbase are just too cunty".

Obviously, if you don't like visual novels / choose your own adventure type books, or reading in general, despite being a bit more than that, it's certainly not for you. Then again, gotta remember which thread I'm in!

I want an endless 3rd person hack and slash co-op dungeon crawler with satisfying combat and physics-based traps that are good enough to make it fun to watch your buddy get ragdolled and that are routinely updated and expanded to keep it fresh and unpredictable

I am fully okay with this also having waves of skeletons

Are there any co-op games where you level up unique / asymmetric abilities (you know, like warrior skills vs mage skills etc) that don't have violence in them? There are no board games that fit that description (it comes close, but, never quite).

It seems odd to me that no one has 'reallllly' cracked the "generic style of game you can fit loads of different themes around" that isn't about violence. I'm not against violence at all, it's just there are some people I know who are put off by it that I'd like to board game with, and it struck me as odd how limited it is?

Nah, you don't level up unique abilities. Pandemic is definitely the closest, and I think Pandemic legacy probably comes 'real' close, but it's still not quite there. Pandemic is actually kinda far away from what I'm after too, because it suffers more than any other game from quarterbacking. Like, Spirit Island is super close, despite obviously having lots of violence, because it could easily be rethemed to be just spooking people off. (appreciate one of them already does that, but you know).

I've seen several game sites talk about how awesome Astro's Playroom for the PS5 is. I guess it's the only real new game they've got for it right now. But the stuff I've seen just looks like Mario Odyssey plus playstation references minus interesting gameplay elements. I guess the graphics are good but honestly the returns on better graphics have pretty much fully diminished for me at this point so I don't really care.

I haven't finished my first playthrough because well there's not much incentive to

but it's fun and filled with fun moments and maybe I should take off the fart mask and just plunge into it

I played sober cop with zero initiative and it was fun (?) to watch him die from kicking a box or lacking the volition to suck air

That's a good cop

Maybe next time I'll play hosed up cop and be mean to the kid and find a bunch more ways to die

It's an all right game

I mean honestly if I spin this up again and the game itself tells me yo this can't be played it's too much effort I'd believe it

i've spent an unnatural amount of my life in divorce court. divorce court sucks.

imagine playing papers please, but you are a paralegal, and your job is to take a decades worth of financial papers that are in some random loving box, and you're supposed to put them in order in an excel spreadsheet, while looking for "suspicious" purposes. or say you're given an encase image of a hard drive and you need to find where all the pornography on the hard drive came from and whether the photos are of people that are of age, and whether the child pornography on the hard drive was acquired legitimately or placed by the wife so that she could do better in the divorce.

i can't fathom gamifying the experience. everyone you meet is going through the worst time in their entire life and are absolutely awful.

i know a guy that actually made "games" like this for a living. they were training simulators for the military that weren't released for the public. while "for the military" might imply some kind of combat, these were simulations for different levels of legal clerk that taught you things like which drawer x files belong in or what level of clearance y people have to look at z. i guess the military figured people would be more motivated by the gamification instead of just having someone say "put those files in that drawer"?

the divorce court game you are describing sounds way more exciting and scandalous, people would probably play it for fun

If you fail as a lawyer you end up in something called "doc review." Imagine spending x years in law school, and then your vocation becomes "sit in front of computer, read document, and press button onscreen indicating if document is relevant, or not relevant." That is becoming a modern lawyer, the game.

In phoenix wright, there's an uplifting theme - don't make up evidence, believe in the truth, etc. It's something of a send-up of the criminal justice center. The only themes I can think of for "family court attorney" the game are "don't ever get married, if you do, don't even get divorced, hell is other people."
