that's the funny thing, they... kinda are and Birds of Prey was the first big move in that direction

like, Justice League bombing killed the DCEU as an interconnected, linear series of movies. instead, they're soft-rebooting the parts of it most people liked (Harley, Aquaman, Shazam) and following the previous material with those characters in broad strokes, but doing entirely new things with everyone else, and throwing canon more or less out the window entirely.

which honestly, is probably the way to go, given this also produced Joker and that movie was solid as hell

Birds of Prey was just crazy fun, to me. Exactly what that kind of movie should be, and a breath of fresh air after Suicide Squad. And I know Andrew agrees, so it's a possibility for a WLM for 2020.

Joker was one of those movies that was extremely well directed and well acted, but I never want to watch it again, and I don't really know why it was made. Like, I strongly disliked it, but can respect the craft that went into making it. Though the fact that they decided to throw in killing Bruce Wayne's parents at the end was just a laughable choice. We almost made it through that drat movie without having to see Martha and Thomas Wayne murdered again, and then right at the end, not so fast! Pretty sure they're the most murdered people in cinema at this point.

That being said, yeah, I like that DC is heading towards, "Just do whatever you want to do, directors, don't worry about fitting the movies together, in plots or theme."

Joker is a great movie to put on in the background, but if you're digging for any sort of grander meaning or social critique you're either 13 years old and just watched Fight Club for the first time or are a 4ch chud.

The only bad thing about Birds of Prey is any pretense that it's a Batman movie. My wife knows nothing about the characters, didn't see Suicide Squad, and adored it for just being this super weird exaggerated crime movie. I can get not being to into it during the first twenty minutes, but it really gets better. It's incredibly striking and an A-Tier action flick.

But it's also 2020 is a bit lacking in films and they tend to not go for prestige stuff for We Love Movie stuff, but high quality fun films.

Honestly, I do like when they get deep into the weeds. I'd actually enjoy a non-comedic thirty minute podcast of just Andrew and Chris talking about Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

I was fine with the film character in a vacuum, but I have no idea why they slapped the Cassandra Cain name on her. She was effectively a different character.

The brain trust behind the DC output is just no Kevin Feige. Say what you will about Marvel movies, but comparatively they care a whole lot more about establishing characters you want to see and how they’re built from the comics with a lot more care than DC seems to do.

It's easily in the Top 5 most racist movies they've covered for the show. Someone in another thread in PYF I think posted some stuff about the book series its based on a few months ago, and the movie is practically woke in comparison, though.

I loving love the LOTR movies. I've even managed to not let The Hobbit movies ruin that love.

The LOTR movies are this weird, amazing accomplishment of filmmaking that I'm not sure will ever be duplicated, or should even be try to be. Everyone in it seemed so happy to be working on something so momentous with other people who were taking it seriously, from the director and lead actors down to the extras riding horses and the crew members making chain mail. Everyone bringing their A game. And the appendices on the extended DVDs were an unbelievable look into filmmaking itself.

I'm so glad they started doing We Love Movies for the monthly Patreon episode because I agree, it's really enjoyable to listen to them talk about films they enjoy and go into more detailed film analysis/appreciation. It's not something they get as much of an opportunity to do on the main feed.

It didn't click for me until about 30 minutes into the episode but I've actually heard of the novel series before, because one of the cool robots in a Gundam spin-off novel is named after the mystical oriental martial art that Remo Williams uses. Evidently at some point in time, one Japanese author managed to look past all of that racism and read at least one of those books.

It really cannot be stated how much more insanely racist the Destroyer books are than that adaptation. Look at almost any summary of them and it'll either be deeply racist or a parody of something 50 years out of date.

quote:

Slave Safari
Book 12

Young socialites from America's leading families are dying—or are they? When one of the "dead" is found alive, enslaved in an exclusive African brothel, influential people see to it that Remo and Chiun are issued with tickets for the Dark Continent. Whether they like it or not. And if it should happen that local legend speaks of a time when a man from the East and a man from the West will come to liberate the minority Loni people? It could just be a coincidence. Or it could be an ancient debt of honor that the House of Sinanju must make good on.

I’ve always said the LOTR movies have no business being as good as they are. With Peter Jackson’s career up to that point, it’s just unbelievable to me. Yet here we are.

It’s like how the writer of Chernobyl is the same guy who directed the spoof “Superhero Movie” with Pamela Anderson. Wat?

But The Lord of the Rings movies are pretty much perfect adaptations. I think the only thing that I would change is the inclusion of Tom Bombadil touching up the CG to modern standards without going full Lucas on it.

To me, the only real questionable thing I can think of that I really took offense to in the theatrical cut is that Saruman gets no ending. Obviously fixed in extended, but it’s super weird to leave such a big character hanging in the third movie.

I would also change absolutely nothing in the Moria sequence. And yes: that includes leaving the Balrog with wings. Fight me.

It's been discussed to death, but I would honestly change the multiple endings to Return of the King. Not necessarily their existence, but the way it's edited with the fading out...fading back in, making you think the movie was done, only to say, psyche, we've got another scene left! And then they do it again. And again. And again. I kept mentally getting up from the seat in the theater, only to say, "Oh, we're...okay." But the third one, I started laughing, which is probably not what they were going for at that point of the movie. If they got rid of the fades, I really don't think people would complain, and would just see it as all falling action.

But that really is my only complaint. Well, yeah, that and the Saruman thing you mentioned, but it's fixed in the extended.
