Boeing is probably going through a dictionary and pairing each word with "airplane," making up some invention, and filing a patent. Who knows if that particular patent holds the secrets to space elevators or the next generation of monorail or something? By owning every silly patent they can think of, Boeing forestalls some dude in a Florida garage ending up with the patent for email. BigHead fucked around with this message at 15:58 on Nov 12, 2020 |

Unfortunately she's not driving right now as a result of battling cancer, so hopefully her treatment goes well.

Aerial power/refueling basically. quote:Disclosed are aircraft configured to perform tethered and untethered flights as well as methods of operating such aircraft. During a tethered flight, the aircraft is connected to a power line using its connecting module. While tethered, the aircraft can receive electrical energy from the power line and use this energy for propulsion and/or storage. The aircraft comprises a propulsion module for providing vertical and horizontal thrusts. In some examples, the aircraft comprises a transport module. The transport module may be removably attached to the propulsion module and be replaceable with another transportation module. During an untethered flight, the electrical energy is supplied to the propulsion module from a battery and/or a generator on board of the aircraft. The untethered flight capability can be used for landing and takeoff, flying away from power lines or when the power line is not operational, and other like examples.

I work around electrical infrastructure as part of my job and the money figures related to routine maintenance, veg management, and repair/replacement plus cost per hour down just go up and up and up the higher the voltage. You line-kill a 500 Kv NERC line, and you're going to be costing someone, somewhere, a truly astounding amount of money per hour.

Didn't see this posted yesterday, but the bridge that takes I-75/I-71 over the Ohio River in Cincinnati is shut down due to a semi crash and fire yesterday morning. https://mobile.twitter.com/WLWT/status/1326475227816189952 https://mobile.twitter.com/McGingeryBeard/status/1326535668458287106 Here's the story. https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2020/11/12/brent-spence-bridge-closure-75-bridge-fire-ohio-kentucky-detours/6262027002/ One of the surface street bridges is also closed due to weight capacity issues from all the detoured traffic. Traffic is already pretty bad in this area, but now it's pretty much completely hosed. River traffic was also shut down, which could be an even bigger economic impact depending on how long that lasts. The bridge was already in bad shape. There was a story about a guy who parked under it for a Bengals game and came back to a smashed car from a chunk of concrete that fell off of it.

They would land and hang from powerlines to recharge their battery (inductive? conductive pads on the hooks? idk), then drop off and continue doing secret squirrel observation/jamming stuff until the next recharge. But never large vehicles, and never crewed.

I don't know if you could do anything with trying to directly interface with the cable. There's no voltage potential from one part of the cable to the other, so I guess you could try to get something from induction.
