Bruce Hussein Daddy posted:I am convinced that if we limited all interactions to <15 minutes, didn't talk into each others faces and when we HAD to (eye exam, dental work) everybody wore PPE it'd all be over in 2 weeks. This of course means that school, office work and public eating/drinking go away and that's apparently unacceptable. Nothing is going to end this in two weeks and people should really stop saying this. It took Australia months to crush their outbreak in Victoria with an extremely strict lockdown. It took China months after literally welding people indoors. There's nothing we can do that's going to end this in less than a few months, and that includes a vaccine roll-out.

Lacrosse posted:Seattle. Back when I worked downtown I used to go for walks in Freeway Park but one of the resident homeless there took a fancy to me and started stalking me. This continued for several months until he started getting more and more aggressive and came at me. I don't know how I got away but I think another homeless guy stopped him as I escaped up a flight of stairs. That was the second incident, the first incident was a homeless woman who was outside the downtown Library branch on Second who got in my face, spittle and all, demanding money. Third time was a homeless guy around Third/Pike who asked me for change, I told him no I didn't have any, he followed me through the intersection then came right up behind me and started shouting aggressively at me. By this point I had a weapon and I flashed it at him and backed right off. Fourth time was this Spring in Federal Way, I was going for a walk near my office complex and a homeless guy decided he wanted me to be his wife, when I rebuffed him he followed me, then chased me through a neighboring business park and I had to escape up an embankment to get away from him. I also was followed through Pike Place Market during the early part of the pandemic, but I don't really count that since I wasn't assaulted, just freaked out. I usually have a way of defending myself but I just don't put myself in a situation to get attacked anymore. Jesus that's so incredibly traumatic. I just want to give you a big hug and feed you ice cream and pizza

I keep thinking about that post earlier from the guy who crack-pinged hard enough he went antimask and frankly I think he's correct -- at least for America COVID is in EXPLOSIVE GROWTH! right now, masks are hilariously impotent against the sort of spread we're seeing (185 THOUSAND!!! cases! in one day!!!), we needed full mask compliance starting immediately in February/March Even if we had perfect, full compliance right now the results would take like months to start kicking in, without any actual shutdown of public congregation spaces

SKULL.GIF posted:I keep thinking about that post earlier from the guy who crack-pinged hard enough he went antimask and frankly I think he's correct -- at least for America I mean, I totally get where that guy is coming from. The problem is that an apparent panacea like masks really fucks with a lot of people and leads them to make bad choices. Masks aren't even close to being a silver bullet unless you've got everyone running around in N95s all the time, which means that bars and restaurants are de facto shut down since you can't eat or drink through a mask. Obviously everyone should be wearing masks, but they're complete garbage and as good as nothing without additional measures if your goal is to actually slow anything down. My city's school district just went full-remote due to outbreaks at every single school, and I know for a fact that the schools here are taking mask rules very seriously.

still laugh about how people turned off their thinking goo after hearing "stay at least six feet apart" and so now everyone acts like some sort of invisible force field pops into existence at six feet no matter what other stupid poo poo you are doing at the moment. having a maskless coughing competition inside? 5'11" = death but 6'1" = happy times.

Twerk from Home posted:How seriously can the schools be taking masks if people are eating lunch? But... that's kind of the whole point. You can't have kids in the building for a full school day if they can't eat or drink. You can't really make it safe for them to eat or drink if you want high levels of mask compliance. It's the same poo poo as bars or restaurants. Sure, you can have people standing around a bar in N95s that they never take off, but that's not exactly a winning situation for the bar owner. Masks are completely useless for what we want them to do. They're useful for situations where you absolutely cannot avoid coming into contact with other people, not for letting us pretend that everything is fine and we can proceed as usual.

I assume Covid is going to infect about 70% of the population, with a death toll probably between 0.5 - 1%. Which is loving horrific when you look at the US as a whole. But in my area of florida, that works out to about 2,000 deaths across the county at the upper end. So all I have to do is not be one of those 2000.
