The reality is even loving dumber: it's supposed to be a smuggling ship, and nobody at CIG has any imagination so when they think 'smuggling' all they can come up with is "holes in the floor like that one time they hid in a hole in the floor in the Millennium Falcon in stars war" and because the backers are equally stupid, they eat that poo poo up.

Its just really indicative of what CIG are, that they can crank out pretty 3D art assets using existing tools all day long. But if its a basic gameplay feature it'll take 5 years and be buggy as hell.

They're basically a modding team.

The Titanic posted:

The answer here is easy.

Skill of your art team: 10
Skill of your level team: 9
Skill of your programming team: 1
Skill required to move some new static mesh your art team made around a level the level designers made that doesn't require programming to do anything: 0

Expect this, more dumb stuff like this, and random CryEngine tutorials to comprise the next several years of development.

At least until CIG finds a capable Chinese company that can pound out something resembling a video game with an iota of stability with all of the art assets.

I tuned in to a former fighting game personality I used to like who happened to be playing Star Citizen. He was freaking out over "displays" of landspeeders. After he randomly glitched out and died trying to do some sort of control point mission, I got banned from the chat after asking if his group was supposed to do something other than stand there since no NPCs showed up to contest it.

Clip and and ship it, commandos. Game is good.

In Elite, smuggling is handled by making use of existing systems involving scanning, heat efficiency, and ship loadout. Patrolling NPC ships will regularly check out nearby PC ships on their scanners, but you can fall under their radar by putting your ship in a 'no emissions' mode which shuts down shields and minimizes heat output, at the cost of rapid internal heat build-up and vulnerability to physical impacts. This makes sliding undetected into a highly patrolled station a matter of timing and player piloting skill, especially if you're smuggling criminal passengers who won't be happy if a collision happens. You can also design a better smuggling ship via a heat-efficient ship loadout that still manages solid cargo/passenger capacity.

Now, there's a lot to be said about progression and difficulty curves in Elite, and whether smuggling is really worth it when compared to other "safer" activities, but it is a complete subset of gameplay that builds off of existing systems and player knowledge about how those systems interact.

In Star Sector, detection is based on both ship attributes and environmental qualities. Ships have a basic detection value and emission value, both of which can change according to modded layout. Fleets are more difficult to detect in belts and nebulae. There's also active modes (dark, cruise) that affect a fleet's detection capabilities. All this leads to a 'stealth' system making use of the same navigation and positioning considerations that govern FTL travel in the rest of the game, and very frequently you have cat and mouse scenarios where you are dodging a bigger fleet and/or trying to sneak past local patrols so you can do business in a port's black market. This is in fact a core part of gameplay where tariffs can make or break the profit margin of a high-risk voyage.

In Star Citizen you've got a chess-board gimmick, a hole in the floor and some vents I guess. Have fun with your imagination.

I have this feeling that if Frontier and CIG teamed up, they'd be able to actually build something like this new version of Elite that's coming, but it'd look better.

Pretty sure they'd still make a painfully boring and super tedious game though. And CIG would make sure that selling your cargo is a full-day event of boredom and fidelity screens you need to walk around a city full of trains to individually interact with.

I'm not a fan of the Citizer look, and much prefer ED's style honestly. The Citizer look to me is basically kit bash 3-4 generic outdated "military looking" things, turn it into a high poly static mesh, break it into 47 unattached and unique objects, and giggle as it jitters through surfaces.

You'd need to remove Crobberts. David Braben at least has a vision - it's a slightly outdated vision (considering current MMO trends), but it lends itself to interesting stuff actually being developed and lets you experience simulation of space travel and life. All of this is stuff that David Braben wanted to work on and have in his game since 1984 and the modern computers just allowed for it to scale up and have more of it, backed by some really clever technical solutions that allow for more - in certain spots - than what competition presents.

Unlike SC, which is just a mish-mash of copycat crap, because Crobbear has no coherent vision other than "SW, but it's WW2 in space with me as coolest guy" and all of his clever programmers left after spending few weeks to months with this egocentric maniac.

You cannot open them unless the queen is in the proper spot.

In any case, everybody knows the vents exist so the customs inspector just has to ask the pilot to open the vents, just like they ask you to open your car's trunk
