the value of the fancy rear end mac pro with the huge monitor is in it's aesthetics and signaling. You see that computer at the receptionist's desk at a startup, you know they can spend, which means they have access to money.

It's a good computer but people don't buy it because they divided gigaflops by dollars and it came out on top.

I have a (base model with education discount, so it was like 900 bucks) MBA because I highly prefer the aesthetics of macs vs. windows machines. Design is really important to me though, so I assign it monetary value. Let's just say I spent an extra $500 - if I use the computer for five years, that's like a quarter a day, which I would consider worth it for a design I enjoy.

No one is disputing a MBA is a great computer. They're talking about the Mac Pro, a desktop computer ranging from $6000 to $53,100 that uses either $700 casters or $300 feet and has a monitor where the stand alone is $1,000.

that must be a pretty fancy stand :p

are the mac pros themselves considered to be worth the price? My understanding is that those ones that are 50k are used for a lot of high end design stuff that requires a ton of computing power

They're not worth it, ever, but the deeper you go into the very high end, the smaller the Apple cut is by comparison.

as I said, for me at least it's about design, and I highly prefer the design (both external appearance and UI design) of macs, and that has value to me. If you don't give a poo poo about that it is probably better to get a PC.
