I haven't read foucault, admittedly, but my understanding is just because he writes a lot about prisons and how society indoctrinates peolle and the like and presumably has a complicated view of education and the way schools can be hosed up because of that, he does not say teachers are literally the same as prison guards.

I was a philosophy major in college and gave a speech about foucault and facebook (which was brand new at the time, this would be 06 or 07) where I was like "we're all going to be in a self-imposed panopticon!" and it's either the dumbest or smartest thing I've ever come up with.

This isn't Stuff You Can't Believe You Just Figured Out, but just in case anyone's curious, "league" is ultimately from Latin ligare "to tie, bind" and is actually pretty closely related to "liege", whereas "colleague" is from collega "a partner in office", from com- "with" + legare "to dispatch, to send as ambassador". Their similar spelling in English is due to their both coming through French, and "league" probably gets its modern spelling from "colleague" rather than the other way around.
