I say this all the time, and if any company’s gonna shrug their shoulders and either ignore the space entirely or try to win support by simply becoming too big to ignore it’s Apple, but the only way the Mac sees game support competitive with the rest of the PC and console space is by Apple acting like a console maker and paying for it.

To be fair, I bet a lot of MacBook users are at a desk with an external monitor most of the time. But I agree with you that most probably don't have two. Yeah I probably would have bought a new macbook if it had the option for two monitors. It's probably not a good idea to upgrade since I'm so reliant on it. Waiting is smarter anyway!

guys these benchmarks its dumb as gently caress but Jesus Christ the Mini and the Air end up being the real (non)-surprises here. The value proposition over their i3 and i5 predecessors, respectively is stupid once you start speccing out an M1 MacBook Pro as an all-rounder and add storage it’s kinda like “why not spend another $200-$400 and get a Mini/Air combo?” They all seem to perform the same at <10 min but the Air gets hot while the Pro and Mini apparently, like, never do. But seriously if you’re only doing mac poo poo that mini appears to be in punching distance of a kitted out iMac.

But unless the real-world performance is much better and the running temperatures are wildly different the 13” MacBook Pro seems like a real value loser here vs the Air. Five extra hours of battery is nice tho.

Any comment on thunderbolt support? I still have that issue where a 3rd monitor on the Totu dock cannot be turned portrait on a 2018 on 10.15.7 (worked fine in .6) and our MDM has locked me out of even trying in Big Sur.

The Air scores about twice as well across the board as my seven year old MBP. I was honestly impressed when the quad core i5 Air matched it, but it’s finally becoming time. The old itch. It has returned.

No fan, does basically everything I need in a notebook, I still have the "old" new Mac Mini Intel that is specced out if I really need something specific that the new Air can't run. I think I'm in. I wouldn't be except my rMBP mid-2012 can't go to big sur (although that might be a blessing in disguise) and is just feeling very slow.

I got curious and wondered what the trade-in value was for my 2020 Intel Air versus an M1 one (I don't think I'll be going for it though). Alarmingly, it seems Apple doesn't even list the 2020 Air as a trade option (after filling in a serial number and specifiying Macbook Air, it offers me a choice of years and 2020 isn't an option, only 2019. For a 2019 i5 model they quoted me £450 value. Mine's a 2020 i7). I'm gonna seriously consider the M2 Air though.

If it's at all possible to wait and not buy first gen M1, you really, really should. However good the silicon is, it's stuck in a 5 year old chassis that was designed for another architecture with a different TDP. If you can hold out a generation you will be rewarded with (probably) much better hardware. It took three years for Apple to drop powerpc support, and another two years beyond that to drop Rosetta. You've got time.

You can technically run 3 displays if you use the built in display, one external and one iPad with side car. Otherwise you'll need to wait for them to replace the higher end MBP and add 4 ports and dual monitor support.
