Oh no!😱

This week I've been mainly painting Malifaux, much like most weeks tbh. This time its the Guilds Sonnia Criid, a woman who manages to make me think I've misspelled both her names, but I did check, and her Witchhunter crew. The witchling stalkers are 1e metals, the rest are 2e plastics.

Sonnia Herself. I made a discarded newspaper for the base to hide the fact shes an ebay rescue who is missing the front half of her left foot, which worked well. I tried some OSL which... Well, its a learning process and every days a schoolday. Next attempt will be better.

Her totem, who I have been refering to as "Burnnie Skeliington", but I've now checked and it is called "Purifying Flame". This is why I'll never be hired to write fluff for Malifaux. Decided that just coating the model in Hexwraith flame would be a cop out, and that he should be "real" fire. The flames look better in person, but I do kind of wish I'd put some smokey black on the very tips of the flames.

Her henchman, Samael Hopkins. I'm not massively keen on this model tbh, so didnt spend a lot of time deciding on a colour palette. Looked like leather armour to me, so snakebite leather and a drybrush was most of the work. I have no idea what the thing hanging down is supposed to be. Danger Handbag? Combat Sporran? Who knows. It was only when googling him to try and find out what colour it was supposed to be that I found out the model isnt supposed to have a hat, and is supposed to have a mallet, both conversions the seller failed to mention in the listing. Found a suitable mallet replacement in my bits box, but I dont hate the hat and would have been way more work to remove and resculpt the hair that I want to put in.

The Witchling Stalkers. Not much to say tbh, contrasts, metallics, an ink wash and some drybrushing. I'm pleased with how they look compared to how little time they took.

So due to some personal life stuff I haven't painted in almost two months, but this weekend I got sort of a flash of inspiration, and knocked out this daemon prince from my Thousand Sons Army, as Well as this Tzaangor Shaman, which I got more as a cheap Elite Slot filler, so I didn't put as much effort into him, or taking pics of him. Neither of them are based yet. I am going ot base them when I finish my last two models needing bases, which is a Helbrute and Heldrake.

I magnetized the off hand.

I'll take that compliment. It's hard not to with the way the base model looks. Also I recognize the color scheme is very much WoW, though not intentionally. The Daemon Prince color scheme is an amalgamation of the Color Scheme my Rubrics had (Kantor Blue and Balthazar gold) and the skin tone of my Tzaangors (Aethermatic blue over grey primer) which meant a lot of blues.

Dienes posted:

It certainly does. I did not do anything to modify it, that is GW's sculpt. I don't know why anyone/interdimensional demi-god would hold anything like that if they weren't intending to throw out the bird.

Looks good, perhaps you could add some color (orange or purple?) to the base instead of the model itself.

I think the yellow is quite dark and orangey, preventing it from standing out from the copper that it’s next to. maybe you could try brightening the hood up a bit?

Personal opinion would be to brighten up the yellows and then switch it up to a darker color on the lower body.

Finally figured out what was wrong with my airbrush so I pumped out a few dozen basecoats. I'm not much of a painter, but I do read a lot about it so I how that counts for something.

First up is my Iron Warriors Warsmith. I zenithaled the basecoat with liquitex carbon black and titanium white inks, and then went out and bought some Vallejo liquid silver since it was the only thing in stock. Sucks that I couldn't get it thin enough (so the zenithal was useless) but oh well. I also primed a shin for the eventual hazard stripes. I will never do yellow without an airbrush again.

Truthfully I only put thought into the model itself, and not the eventual paint scheme. I figure I'll try OSL, and maybe chipping since I have the medium.
This is my first time attempting OSL so any and all advice is very welcome. I wanted all glowy bits to be yellow, but I'm not sure about a few things. I know Vince Venturella talks about filtering colors, and that's what I planned on doing with the silver into the yellow to clean up the overspray.
I figure I need to gloss varnish this (if I want fry keep the metal shiny) prior to washing though, correct?
After that I can use some gloss nuln oil to start building towards the shaded recesses. If I remember correctly you're supposed to pull the wash with the brush to where you want it to rest.
I guess I could try weather streaking too? I guess it all depends on if they look worn enough.
Maybe I should matte it? I'm not too sure where to go thematically.

I think with this one I'm just going to build up to the brightest parts. It's just an experiment but I'm hoping something comes from it.

Rakarth Flesh

I love this colour as a base for all my blood angel vampire bois, but it's the shittiest grittiest paint i own and i'm sick of seeing tniy little bumps on my minis' faces. apparently VGC's heavy warm grey is the closest alternative. anyone have any experience using it? also, since i've never used a vallejo extra opaque paint before, i assume it just needs a little extra thinning?

This is one of the few paints I can't find a direct equivalency for in Vallejo (or any other brand). A close one is Vallejo's Khaki, but it's not quite the same. Haven't tried Heavy Warmgrey but it sounds like a good candidate. All the "Heavy" references are the equivalent of GW's "base layer" (very opaque) so it's probably a better match than Khaki.

What do you thin your paints with out of curiosity?

i find glaze medium helps smooth out gritty/chalky paints pretty well

additionally if you have a habit of pot dipping, acrylic paint with resin medium has a tendency to clump when exposed to water, i am not sure of the full composition of citadel paints but if it's smooth for others as reported it may be possible you got too much water in the pot and now you've got microbeads of clumped pigment floating around in there.

you can see this the most dramatically in vallejo liquid metal, where pot dipping a wet brush means you have to throw the paint directly into the garbage

edit: fwiw: I am aware acrylic paints are water based but that doesn't mean you can't throw off the balance or miss some part of the process they use to blend their paint. I bought a big bag of pipettes recently and if I can't transfer a pot to a dropper bottle I try to use the pipettes exclusively for getting stuff onto the palette now

I've been slowly phasing out my GW paints for vallejo. I'm trying to source some of the metal color for cheap but everywhere is sold out of them so i'll stick to the GW metallics I have as aside from the GW pots I've been pretty happy with them.

However, if Vallejo made a retributor armor replacement in their metal color line I would pay all the money for it.

Yeah, I definitely run mostly P3 right now, but Vallejo is slowly starting to take up a lot more space on my table at the moment.

Part of it really is that Vallejo is super easy to find near me, and it's some good paint. I've been using glazes of Scurvy Green over black to create a nice deep swamp water without using water effects and it looks real nice TBH.

The Red Bull. The art on the carapace and the crown around the head are both inspired by The Last Unicorn

I also put a dying/dead World Eater in the canal before I did the water pour.

Knochensammler. It is a bit hard to see due to the vegetation, but it is stepping out of the woods and stomping through an Imperial Guard artillery battery, with figures fleeing in terror.

I'm generally willing to use just about any paint as long as it looks good and stays on the model but I'll take craft paint over citadel most days tbh

as long as the pigment's good the only important thing is using the right medium/thinners and like 3/4s of GW's product line is just paint with more or less medium/flow improver, who cares about lightfastness when we have UV resistant topcoats? (GW's is probably lovely anyway)

I just can't get over the price
