The rear beam axle fix was a great bit of sideways thinking, esp for something you wouldnt think would actually do something like that in the first place - I had to sit down and sketch it out to really understand it properly. Clever

This is really cool but I am so distracted by the welding on the A piller. The long running "lightened" triangulation on the bas is great and looks plenty strong but the welding is so inconsistent and not straight. It's like they did a great job crafting the individual parts and then they're like " yea have the new guy weld it, who cares"

EDIT: I'm assuming that's a piece of steel. If its aluminum I take back that it is strong.

It's definitely steel, likely mild steel. The welds don't look terrible, just a bit amateur. Looks like he had his wire feed too fast and/or voltage too low. (on the assumption it was GMAW/MIG) It'll probably hold but it's definitely not as strong (or as pretty) as it could be.

Yup plus he probably did that welding in place and doing a climbing weld like that its easy to go to slow and get a lot of built up weld.

It actually makes perfect sense since it sounds like the field wasn't actually bunched up under the safety car. Pitting under yellow doesn't work if you haven't caught the leader / pace car yet. Especially since race pace was still slow enough to not be flagged as "too fast under caution".

Yeah of course the math checks out. I just didn't expect that they would be able to win and maintain a lap of lead with that, especially after struggling with the car

Is Roadkill completely dead now? It doesn't seem to show up on MTOD at all.

Instead I watched an earlier episode of Roadkill Garage that I missed, with the VW buggy. They don't do much to it but it's funny how in the series I gave up on MCM, they spent 3 episodes without even managing to start their buggy, and here they checked the battery was at 11v and there was (some) oil and just went for it. And then rolled it by the end of the first episode.

Roadkill is still there, they broke the shows into half seasons with time in between the halves due to covid.

They just wrapped up the last half of Roadkill garage, I think there's a few more Roadkill coming? I haven't kept track, Freiburger posts when new stuff comes out and then I go check.

Few automakers are as committed to vehicle safety as Volvo. In fact, the Swedish brand has even risked alienating prospective customers with some of its safety measures, including earlier this year when all its vehicles were limited to a top speed of 112 mph to reduce the chances of fatal car accidents.

In a new video shared by the carmaker, we were given more insight into Volvo's intense crash-testing program, and it's much more than your average barrier test. Designed to mimic more extreme crash scenarios, the Volvo Cars team used a crane to drop an XC40 SUV to the ground from a height of 30 meters (just under 100 feet).

The XC40 wasn't the only Volvo to undergo this test, with a shiny V60 wagon also destroyed and ten different Volvos in total involved in the test.

With extrication specialists close by, the test allowed these professionals to find the best tactics and tools to free occupants trapped in a severely damaged vehicle. Most of the time, ordinary crash tests allow the car's doors to be opened, but not every real-life crash unfolds this way, and this was the purpose of Volvo's dramatic test. Extrication specialists are often required in certain accidents such as high-speed collisions, when an accident involves a part of the vehicle where there are no energy-absorbing crumple zones, or when a car hits a truck.

Specialists said that in these worst-case crash scenarios, occupants are often severely injured and the so-called "golden hour" refers to the period of time between freeing them and getting them to the hospital to save their lives.

"We hope no one ever needs to experience the most severe accidents, but not all accidents can be avoided," explained Hakan Gustafson, senior investigator for the Volvo Cars Traffic Accident Research Team. "It is vital [that] there are methods to help save lives when the most severe accidents do happen."

Typically, these extrication specialists train on old vehicles from scrapyards, but since modern cars are constructed so differently, Volvo's test allowed them to analyze how a new vehicle behaves in a severe crash.

Along with the brand's efforts to minimize distractions for drivers, it's encouraging to see the bold steps taken to ensure that we're all better protected on the roads.

I've seen segments of that in some ads I guess... it's interesting but I think the impact speed is like 80km/h so it's a faster than regular crash tests but I think the goal was to make it look more impressive by dropping the cars rather than accelerating them a bit faster in the lab.

I also got a Volvo ad on youtube that showed clips from when they introduced the seatbelts. It's pretty hilarious, they've got people screaming about how it's a violation of human rights
