One 1x1 foot interior starship thingy done, eight more to go. Next up berthing and bunks for the crew and stormies, complete with someplace to practice marksmanship:

That's rad. One way or another I'll have an ender 5 by the end of the year, are you selling them somewhere? I reckon inteiror maps would make for a great melee grinder skirmish.

Not my STLs, but you can pick them up for a very reasonable tenbuxx at https://blacksitestudio.com/product/the-orbital/ The scatter and detail stuff like generators and terminals bunks and terlets and medbay beds and poo poo is just random stuff from my STL collection. They print up easy peasy with no supports. For the hangar instead of printing I'm going to use some 1 foot by 1 foot high gloss black plexiglass.

Asmodee has been doing some weird restructuring, like they moved their RPGs to some spanish subsidiary and now these are being moved to Atomic (Who makes the excellent Marvel: Crisis Protocol). It's possible they decided that having FFG do everything was a mistake and want them to focus on card games and moved other stuff to more specialized houses. I think its a decision I'm all for because FFG has been dogged by slow releases and poor distribution for ages.

It feels like FFG has too much stuff going on and that they have been lacking focus. As they are moving people along with projects hopefully that means stuff happens more smoothly. Legion would be a much bigger game if it was reliably in stock I think. I don't hear of MCP being perpetually sold out but then I don't really look.

Over the last couple years of Legion existing I've been really impressed by Alex Davy and Luke Eddy. Davy in particular, being the creator and more on the spot for interviews and questions, came across as genuinely caring about the game and demonstrated a pretty deep appreciation for good design and balance with his citation of other specific board games and other wargames. I've always maintained that while the IP is obviously a big draw for a lot of people, Legion legitimately encompasses a lot of components of elegant and modern design that leads to a fairly clean game that's very tactical and satisfying to play. With the transition I'm hinging a lot of my expectations on confirmation as to whether or not those guys are part of the group of "key members involved in the creation and evolution" of the game moving studios. Basically if Davy's going along with his game I'm optimistic, and if he's axed then I'm extremely worried. There's a really brilliant game underneath the surface here that was gaining a lot of momentum pre-pandemic, and I want it to stick around.

I was pretty neutral on the news, since the only downstream effect I saw of them restructuring the RPG was the core books and screens went OOP less frequently, but dumping Davy kind of sucks hog balls.

Honestly, I think Davy was kinda being wasted on Legion. He's a creative. You can see the dude has a million ideas entering his brain every second and has that drive to chase down any one of them. With Disney and LFL approvals, and Asomdee probably weighing into, or taking more interest in, the release schedules would be a little fixed. They're already drawing from canon and would've plotted out desired releases years in advance. Very limiting. If the rumours are true, I'd love to see him take on a project that he owns wholly. All games designers have their side/dream project -- and with a sizeable crowd of fans, name recognition, kickstarter and time -- he's got all the tools to get a truly interesting passion project over the line. I think losing the lead developer is probably a bigger hit in terms of worrying about game balance continuity, as they deal with the nitty-gritty rules specifics and points values tweaks etc. And I sure hope that doesn't mean they're going to start looking for new playtesters because the most recent releases were actually dead in the sweet spot of 'very competitive, not oppressive'. And Holland too would be a big loss, as I don't think FFG had a community-facing employee who knew more about their games, and could comment on them with competitive insight, as him. Also he posts (posted?) here occasionally.

So I'm going to add some gantries and a bit more clutter but also a third ship. Which do you think would pop better on the 1x3 hangar section: A bomber or interceptor? It's a couple hundred grams of FDM filament either way. E: Alex Davy confirms he was unceremoniously shitcanned. :\ Owlbear Camus fucked around with this message at 22:48 on Nov 18, 2020 |

Yeah, gonna go ahead and take that pessimistic stance. Obviously it's a pretty cold and sterile bullshit capitalist move you'd expect from Asmodee for short-term profit and more importantly for people's well being, but that initial AMG Q&A letter didn't exactly inspire confidence either. It may be that pessimism tinting the lens on it, but it reads less to me like they're saying "we intend to adhere to the design ethos and system that's been handed to us faithfully," and more like "well we've got this now and are gonna do whatever we feel like with it." Moreover I may just be reading too much into a hastily made fairly generic statement that they had to rush out. Either way, I hope Davy stays within the realm of creating minis games and will absolutely be on the ground floor for anything new he spearheads.

Private Equity firms, man. I tell myself that even if they gently caress it up and kill it I still have hundreds of dollies and a complete game, but tabletop games are nothing without a network of people actively playing, which is why when it was decent and when it's been bad, motherfuckers have always played 40k. It's like the lingua franca of space wargame dollies. On the printer now: The indoor range. "Okay, I can do this. Feet firmly planted shoulder-width apart. Aggressive lean. Elbow out. Support hand forward on the handguard. Just breathe."

I mean, if you want cold objectivity, Legion has been doing well despite itself. It's spent about half its life in a lovely NPE meta with Tauns/Shores first and then Clone standbys/ARCs which is far more egregious than say, the triple upsilon poo poo from Xwing that got hot fixed. They've had two cracks at designing Darth Vader, the most iconic character in Star Wars, and he's still garbage, of the 10 core units in the game only 3 are regarded as competitive. Han Solo is total garbage. Rebel Heavy vehicles are junk. The game is fun as heck thanks to excellent core rules (which took a lot of inspiration from Bolt Action) but the unit design has been extremely uneven, with the notable exception of the most recent wave.

I think in short there's not enough info to really know yet. But my gut says either second edition or a 1.5 rebalancing in the summer. They won't rock the boat until after Lando/Kallus are out which is probably march. Maybe even a bit after that depending on what they already have queued up for production. The biggest thing they could do to kick legion up a notch in popularity though is to invest in proper stock levels so that you can actually buy core units like B2 droids or phase 2 clones. If you can't buy the minis, you don't buy into the game.

In lighter news the fresh out of the oven RRG update seems to be essentially nothing but positive. The expected clone standby sharing nerf alongside tons of basic rule tweaks and points reductions at first blush seems to make a lot of older stuff newly viable. They know that the community will do it near instantly so why bother. Fifth trooper already have a breakdown article with points changes table and their associated Legion HQ army builder has the points changes done already. Lots of small sensible changes and mostly predictable points changes here. Some cool rules stuff include units being able to shoot from Open transports and are now separately targetable with heavy cover, instead of auto wounds if you wound the vehicle. GAV with an Eweb gonna be really hilarious. Also Field Commanders (only Aayla and Tseries droid) can count as Commanders for list building, and have a courage 2 bubble. hoiyes fucked around with this message at 01:44 on Nov 20, 2020 |

Nice Hoth Luke. IMO do some head swaps before you start painting. It will really break up the monotony of 5 units of rebel troops on the table.

Lol I’ve got 5 as well. 2 cores worth, plus bought another. I cannibalized soldiers from there, the vet squads, the trooper upgrade box, and the rebel specialist box to get what I’ve got now (a random mix and humans and aliens spread through 4 squads that are whatever unit I want them to be in that game).

I've got 5 squads of Rebel troopers too. Must be a thing. I've also got a Snowspeeder, which I used once and realized that it's terrible and will never earn it's points back in a game before getting shot down by the average squad of Stormtroopers.

Last update had snowspeeders come down again (to 130 points), gave them surge->crit, and they get the harpoon for free now. I’ve been joking about running a list with 2 of them for a while now, but at that cost I may actually do it

Another 1x1 foot section printed: barracks berths and refresher, small arms locker and shooting range. So once the 'rona is under control, I plan to put all the cool tables I'm working on into action running a weekly casual escalation skirmish league at the FLGS. Thoughts about this structure? Play casual, match yourselves and have fun. Play a game: 2 points Win a game: 1 point Play against an opponent you have not yet played this season: 1 point Feats of grandeur (1 point each): Come and take it!- Defeat a Force unit with an attack from a trooper unit. They told me they fixed it- Roll a blank result with a pool of 6 or more dice. All too easy- Hold your opponent to 0 objective points a winning game. Secret Mission? What Secret mission? - Win a game where you score either a Secret Mission or Bounty objective point. Duel of the fates - Defeat a force unit with another force unit Not a scratch - Suffer 0 wounds from an attack where 6 or more hits/crits were rolled. (more suggestions along these lines welcome) Rewards (3d printed by the organizer, will revise to include Asmodee support as well) 5 Points: Trooper unit LOS silhouette tool. 10 points- 6 sided ehicle Resilliance disabled/destroyed/damaged marker die. 20 points- Alternate sculpt printed figure. 30 points- Medium terrain piece.

I put a ton of work into him and you can barely tell! Haha. I primed him glossy black then did an overall coat of Scale 75 Decayed Metal. That was followed up with Dwarven Gold with a couple drops of sepia ink from an upper angle. To push the highlights I sprayed the under bits with just a direct application of Sepia ink. Final highlight was Elven gold from the highest angle. For the silver I applied it by hand, but it was Heavy Metal, Speed Metal & White Alchemy. I used Tamiya panel liner dark brown for the gold and black for the silver. The eyes are lamenter yellow over white.
