I went out with a Chinese girl at university. Her and her friends were Christians and were massively liberated by being able to go to church publicly. She's did a Chinese politics course with me and I remember how shocked she was to learn about Tienanmen. Anyway they went home for Chinese New year during our third year of uni and they never came back and no one ever heard from them again. I'd broken up with her before then and sort of fallen out of touch with all of them, so it took me a while to realise what had happened but ever since then when anyone brings up China and social credit scores I get a kind of creeping horror wondering what happened to them.

I wish you could hear my mind being blown right now. There's a Reeves and Mortimer sketch where Matt Lucas sings that, and I never thought that actually was a reference. Love R&M, watched it a kerbillion times, but never saw or heard that song before, thankfully. Once in the Arndale food hall I heard a woman say to her toddler son "come on Tarquin, eat your hoisin duck" and I often wonder about how hosed up that kid will be.

It's an old music hall tune from before the war that was massively popular with skiffle bands because the chords and lyrics for it were in a Teach Yourself Guitar book (not Play In A Day, but I can't remember which one), so you find covers of it by loads of British Invasion bands, who all started off doing skiffle.

i am staying in london for christmas rather than going home to see family. they have largely taken it with equimanity and we hope to do something over summer instead it will be weird christmassing alone but w/e. better than braving the trains for the three days that everyone travels, and quite frankly it's good to have an excuse to break the tradition.

It's so good.

To be honest, I'm kind of hoping for an Xmas that doesn't involve me waking up in my childhood bedroom on Boxing day with a stinking hangover and a 4 hour train journey home ahead of me.

As for christmas dinner, it doesn't really affect me or my family really. Last time we were all together was 2013 for my brothers wedding. Every year since its one or the other of us. My work only allows 10-15% of us to actually get holidays that week, OR new years week. Can't have both. And its not guaranteed until like a month before. So I bypass this nightmare and take my holidays at the start of December. Still not going home, havent been back since last Dec. Mother is 70, not going to cause her death just so I can wear a paper hat and watch the Two Ronnies Special. happyhippy fucked around with this message at 22:52 on Nov 22, 2020 |

My dad isn't talking to me after I told him I was only able to visit for Christmas if we all stayed outdoors. My sister is sending me news articles speculating what rules are gonna be lifted for Christmas week. I daren't tell my mum. I can't in good conscience put any of my family in danger even if the risk is slight. I live in Leeds and work in a hospital, I'm surprised I haven't caught it yet myself.

I'm looking forward to a quiet Christmas. We usually go round to my wife's aunts house with her extended family and have a meal with about 15 or so people there. It's going to be great not doing that and just enjoying having a relaxing Christmas

I haven't yet discussed Christmas with my family and I'm kind of dreading it coming up. On the subject of credit scores, I used to work for a bank in mortgage lending back before the 08 crash and there was an automatic computer credit scoring thing, and we could look at the customer's credit file, but we weren't actually allowed to tell them why if they failed the credit score. This probably helped cover our asses because the thing was completely opaque and sometimes there'd be no obvious clue as to what was wrong with someone's credit, but on several occasions I'd have to listen to someone getting really irate about having a bad score because they'd never taken out any loans or credit cards. Wish I could've just told them "That's capitalism!"

Never overdrawn ever. No collateral, don't own anything other than a Steam account and computer. I assumed I am either non-existant or near zero on the scale.

Walking round at Christmas is a strange atmosphere, and a wee chicken leg and a bottle of old peculiar by your local river is as good a Christmas as anyone could hope for.ThomasPaine posted:A guy I was friends with in undergrad had a baby nephew called Ebenezer, the poor bastard. I don't know if it applies in this case, but doesn't the GDPR entitle people to know if an automatic decision has been made, and to ask it be reconsidered manually? I don't hold out much hope for that being enforced meaningfully, but I seem to remember something about that in data security training.

a pipe smoking dog posted:Also based on his posting I 100% think that Jose is a cop. he's definitely cia backed lmao Also like, yeah the UK government is awful and all, but the genius and horror of capitalist liberal states is that they've successfully conditioned enough of the population so thoroughly that everything is just accepted and borne with resignation. "Still upper lip" "Blitz spirit" "Don't complain" "Keep calm and carry on" and all that shite. Why bother with a massive heavy-handed authoritarian apparatus when you can just kill tens to hundreds of thousands of people and get no meaningful reaction? They don't have enough active ideology to care about throwing trans people in re-education camps or rolling back gay rights, Windrush and similar is part of the same institutional racism and anti-immigrant sentiment as ever more than a desire to larp the Malan administration. The Home Sec of the day can rub herself raw on her little pet deportation/rape camp/torture projects in peace, if it gets too much you can make them retire but you don't need to worry about your government's stability or anything. Honestly it's far more terrifying to me. If you have an actively oppressed populace you can see the route to revolt. We have a populace so brain poisoned that none of the following was even enough to vote the government out, let alone riot in the streets or hang them from lampposts (in Minecraft); 120,000 excess deaths from austerity (No doubt many more by now but I can't find specific figures) Windrush scandal Grenfell fire and all subsequent things we've learned about it Priti Patel engaging in negotiations with a foreign power behind the back of Cabinet and the PM Expenses scandals Everything involving dirty money around the Brexit campaign, as well as all the broken/impossible promises about Brexit* Plus tens of thousands of deaths from a bungled covid response that is seeing plenty of people saying "Eh what can you do?" as if we can't see exactly what to do, or outright thinking it's a conspiracy and that masks are one step shy of building a chain of gulags across the Islands and Highlands, seemingly the one area in which they DO care about 'rights'. So I have no loving idea what you do about that. Complete overhaul of the media to start with I guess, but how do you do that without gaining power in the first place? *Not being a FPBE about it or saying we should run it again or anything, but there obviously was a lot of bullshit going on and nobody cares outside the FPBE brigade who only care because it helps their case.
