Important to note that before cars became a common middle class product, Bibedum was a fancy captain of industry (who's name reference a Roman poet). Jagged bits of rock and metal that will cause flat tires and require people to buy new pneus?

Wikipedia posted:The 1898 poster showed him offering the toast Nunc est bibendum to his scrawny competitors with a glass full of road hazards, with the title and the tag C'est à dire : À votre santé. Le pneu Michelin boit l'obstacle ("That is to say: Here's to your health. The Michelin tyre drinks up obstacles"). The character's glass is filled with nails and broken glass. The implication is that Michelin tyres will easily take on road hazards

It’s probably based on where you live. In the UK I always heard that hard ch sound, but maybe in the US it’s less prevalent. I can’t recall hearing anyone say it out loud since I lived here, knowing how fate works I’ll probably hear someone say it today.

Subaru is the same way. In the US and most other places it's pronounced the (correct) Japanese way, closest to "super-roo". In Australasia for the longest time it was pronounced "su-BAH-roo". They seem to be aligning in recent ads. I got the hard ch sound from watching sports car races with British announcers who always clearly say "MiTCHelin tires!" So like always its the British not knowing how words work. minato posted:Subaru is the same way. In the US and most other places it's pronounced the (correct) Japanese way, closest to "super-roo".
