ERAU had the wings fall off a mid-2000s Arrow a couple years ago during a check ride. The plane's entire life had been spent at ERAU, and it seemed to have been well maintained. I think everyone knew this was coming, and it's why a lot of people are doing commercial and CFI checkrides 172s instead of any sort of complex or high performance airplane right now: DPEs didn't want to get in Arrows after the accident.

The timing may have been unrelated to the AD (although the decision to go with Cessna was probably a mix of the AD and getting a good deal), since big university flight departments can swap out most of their basic training fleets every few years. When I worked for UND, they went from Warriors to glass cockpit Warriors, to 172's in maybe 6 years, so I'd imagine Riddle rotates their airplanes out every few years as well.

The AD stems from the fact that corrosion was happening in a place where you won’t normally see it, so now you gotta put inspection hatches. Worth noting that ERAU is in Florida right by the Atlantic, a position which would make me personally only own composite planes period.

Speaking of Pipers, is it common engineering practice to have wing attach bolts that rotate in their mounts when the bolt gets unloaded from having the wings start to gain lift? PA 46s do that and it was disconcerting seeing the torque stripe broken on each inspection until we found out that stripe only exists for inspectors to verify the nut was torqued during production.

I’m not an engineer, but the torque specs on most things that are loaded strictly in shear are (comparatively) really low. I’m assuming that’s partly because “who cares if the round bolt rotates when unloaded,” and partly because they need the clearance so the bolt and structure can expand and contract with temperature. Again, I am not a
