Control is an OUTSTANDING game. It has excellent writing with a great emotional core, and the gameplay is centered around using your psychic powers to throw things at people at high speeds and maybe shoot them and it's easily the best "i am a psychic wizard" game out there. Plus it's fun to explore a broken not-SCP foundation and see all the terrible, terrible choices its people made while studying weird objects.

e: Also the moral of the game as "accept yourself" is something I really needed to hear this year. Also there's a section in the game that has the most perfect marriage of butt rock and intense action gameplay and I wish I could replay it right now it was so good.

Is that game still a graveyard of poorly translated, half-baked gameplay systems?

Nah, as others have said, the translation is way better than the Steam page might make one think and the actual tactics gameplay is excellent, I wouldn't really call any of its systems half-baked. It is in essence a deep JRPG using the tactical layer of XCOM. While the characters you have access to are determined by the story, they are all highly customizable in their abilities through class choices, masteries, skills and item sets. Troubleshooter is at 94% positive reviews for a good reason and is honestly one of the biggest bargains I've seen in 30 years of videogames, it is positively insane how much content this thing has. I am at 166 hours and I haven't even done all the scenarios and I am still finding new ways to build characters (that said you can complete the narrative part in like ~70 hours if you laser focus it) and the devs are at this moment adding an entire new chapter with two extra characters for free.

It sounds like you already have strategy games and fighting games to play so I don't know why you would bother with MK11 or Stellaris.

e: And if you never finished Doom 2016 I don't know why you would buy Doom Eternal.

Oh yeah, I forgot about GMG and Fanatical. It does look like they're cheaper on there, and I think I don't have to pay sales tax through them (unless that's changed).

It looks like you can only get Fallen Order for Origin, but I suppose it's not that different from buying it on Steam, since it has to link to Origin anyway.

As far as MK11, Stellaris, and Doom Eternal go, I guess it's just that I have a passing interest in them, and they're relatively cheap.

Something I'm curious about : the Sherlock Holmes games are on sale too. A lot of the games like Devils Daughter and Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper are like $2. However, I remember there was thing a while back where the developers (Frogwares) got screwed over by one of their publishers or something, where they weren't making any profit off of sales of their games. Was that ever resolved?

Avoid old Frogwares games. I bought Dracula: Origins when it was on sale, and it kept crashing. Apparently they never recompiled it for Windows 10.

One solution is here:

The solution I used was to turn off custom cursor and run in windowed mode, which also works.

In either case, though, the discussions are full of "This sucker crashes" and the developer did nothing.

Yeah I just grabbed Control from Fanatical too and you also get a bonus mystery game key with the purchase. I think it's the first time I've ever gotten a mystery key for something I didn't own and was ALSO on my wishlist (Hotshot Racing). Fanatical's my favorite bundle/deal site these days by far.

Sidenote: Wasteland Remastered is FINALLY on sale (Steam, 40%). Not the greatest deal but I've been waiting for any discount for ages and been hankering to play it once I finally finish Pillars 1.

I have a guide chord button combo that works on Steam and PS4 controllers, but no Xbox stuff. I tried enabling Xbox controller configurations. In addition to not working, it also screwed with some games by pretending it was a steam controller and using someone else's set ups.

You can probably answer this question as though it were just an Xbox One controller.

You cheated not only the game, but yourself.
But most of all, you cheated BABA

I just beat the story campaign of Carrier Command Gaea Mission!

What a GREAT game, wow! It has some significant flaws, but overall I adored playing it and wish there was a sequel and/or more games like it.

The concept is, you need to capture a whole bunch of islands and you're armed with a carrier, four hovercraft, and four tanks. You can drive/fly all of those in third or first person POV, or control them via an RTS-view. They feel pretty great to control, and the AI is generally good/decent so if an island is easy enough you can take it entirely with attack-move from the map. ... But most of them need you to get in there and shoot things down better than the AI does, or place your tanks or do missile nonsense with hovercraft.

As you capture islands, they generate resource that lets you build more stuff - more guns, more tanks, more everything. If a tank blows up you have to replace it, after all! And this is balanced oddly - when you're sailing between islands you jump into time-warp where everything is built really really fast, which means that the most efficient way to restock is to run out of fuel between islands and wait for everything to be built before you build more fuel and send it to yourself.

This is vaguely countered by an enemy carrier who is sailing around grabbing islands, and he'll find and kill you - or take your stuff! So you can't idle forever in the time warp.

The campaign naturally hides this amazing core of a game behind some of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen in a game: first, extremely bad and bland FPS sections. Second, a plot that's insanely stupid. Third, as you progress through the plot it gives you a few more FPS sections that all uniformly suck. There's also some turret sections or "drive this one tank through an area" sections, and ehhh. Fortunately there aren't that many of them, but the game keeps trying to interrupt it's actually good stuff with this bad plot stuff.

Fortunately for me, now that I've beaten the game (and it was fun enough to stick through, the progression of weapons and difficulty was really cool) I can now sink my teeth into skirmish mode...and mods. There's a Deadly Islands mod that adds all kind of difficulty tweaks and bugfixes to the game, so you can conquer islands to your heart's delight.

If any of this sounds cool, I highly recommend picking this game up now, it's on sale for 6.59$ and it's one of those surprising finds that I would have missed if my boyfriend hadn't insisted I stick with it. And he was right, I love it!

PS: Next up is Hostile Waters, as I understand it's the other game in this genre and does a lot of what it does but better/more interesting, and I'm extremely into that.

It is a really well-crafted simple gameplay loop. I enjoyed the game a lot even before the expansions got put in - I could lose hours just trotting around my absurd raft picking up all the floating junk and occasionally smacking a shark on the nose.

Spend a few minutes dragging in junk, build a thing, put down more raft, put the thing on it, get thing started, drag in more junk. The little islands provide a nice and lucrative break from the loop, too.

It's not remotely difficult. The combat starting out is a bit hard to grasp but it's MMO style meaning you're always wanting to use basic attacks to build up energy, then use cooldown attacks in certain orders, like defense lowering aoe attack and next a high damage single target attack etc.

The only issue would be healing/recovery early on but you can stock up on healing items as there isn't much else you have to spend $$$ on before you get the private island base.

They're still adding significant content updates to it. The escort and extraction modes (extraction being the best one in the game now IMO) were added quite recently. My only complaint with DRG is that there's a significant hump to get over between getting all the equipment upgrades and getting your first promotion, which is what allows you to start earning overclocks. Some of the overclocks are loving incredible and will completely change how you play the classes.

Question about Battle Brothers and Troubleshooters in terms of how they handle the Tactics Game Death Spiral:

Are they more like Darkest Dungeon (in which failing a mission in a total squad wipe is a setback you need to grind easier areas to recover from, but you can't ever really lose the campaign),
or XCOM (a squad wipe likely means you will lose the campaign 10 hours later)?

I really like the nuXCOMs, but the failure spiral is what kept me from absolutely loving them. I know how DD handles it is a sticking point with many, but I sort of appreciated it. Losing sucks.

Like repiv mentioned above, you need to hold the big lit X button (so not the smaller blue x button) for several seconds. You need to hold the button for much longer than you think it should be, like Microsoft wanted to make sure that no one would ever turn off their controller by accident.

If you remove the wireless receiver/connected wire the light will keep flashing for 2-3 minutes, but the controller will eventually turn itself off. Not sure how it works if you use bluetooth.

In Battle Brothers if your guys get very low in battle then they will get injuries like losing a nose or a wound which impacts their ability to continue fighting. If they actually die they have a chance to survive with an injury or they do just die. You can buy replacements easily, but expect to pay a lot if you want something more than a peasant. A total wipe means game over. So there is totally an element of a death spiral where some runs will be abandoned.

Troubleshooter has your characters with a motivation bar and getting knocked out will lower their motivation. But this just means that you can buy them a beer afterwards (or a soda for the underage character, lol) to perk them up. There is no other penalty to losing a mission or abandoning it halfway through other than losing some items collected in the mission which you can still buy back. You're encouraged to try out new builds or jump into missions specifically to farm one enemy. The game gets really tough as even though the skill system allows you to make your characters into nigh-immortal superheroes, the enemy design and AI will get better through the game at almost the same rate to still be able to challenge and surprise you. So there being functionally no penalty for a character getting knocked out is great imo.

It's a bit of a departure. No David Hayter, more audio log lore dumps than usual, more sandboxy. The story is pretty much unfinished because Kojima happened, and then Konami happened. It's absolutely the peak of the series in terms of loving-around and stealth mechanics, although the open world can tend to feel pretty barren between setpieces.

Yeah it’s the best MGS game in terms of gameplay. Lots of opportunity to action or stealth your way through anything with lots and lots of weapons and vehicles. That said it feels like an action game with a MGS skin put on it at the last minute. I didn’t realize how much I equated MGS with ridiculously long cutscenes mixed in with oodles of real life/historical footage. Sutherland instead of Hayter was kind of nice, as much as I love goofy hammy big boss. He’s also a lot quieter, which kinda blows.

And of course, you will feel shame for your words and deeds when you see one of the supporting characters and think Kojima is a perv.

Great game. Get it if you like MGS or stealth-action. It’s a blast to play.
