My son had to come out via an episiotomy, which in layman's terms means 'we are going to cut your vagina and sew it back up'. For a week after he was born I was pretty much bedridden due to the pain of moving/sitting. I read the entirety of the r/relationships thread in GBS while lying in bed with Ralph Jr sleeping next to me and it really helped take my mind off having had my downstairs patched up.

I made a thread in E/N back in 2018 about my dad living with me and having cancer. I posted about his pain and his downfall. You can read the thread here: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3852532 This was back when Bobbie Wickam was a mod, and while she is banned now her and a lot of goons really helped me out a lot mentally and financially. During this time I was very fragile and I had goons tell me to find something on the forums and connect with to help with the pain and burden of losing him. It took me a year but I eventually started posting here more and I have shared my own fair share of blessings. Basically SA has made me a better person than who I was since I first joined and the has been a huge investment. E- Also I know posting this is basically doxxing myself. I have nothing to hide. I'm autistic, trans, and was adopted by an aging hermit couple who self-isolated in a desolate Ohio farm town. The only people my age were either junkies, Baptists, sadists, or a combination of the three, and every location was literally miles apart - impossible to go anywhere without a car, so my formative years were spent mostly alone. Something Awful was my main socialization. I felt like there was an active community that, while I very rarely did more than just lurk (as I still do), I laughed harder and invested further than anything I could have at home or school. After each terrifying day in school I would laugh myself to tears on Fashion Swat and Flash Tub, the Better of for Worse megathreads, inside jokes, for many years it was one of my only sources of joy. It was all so fresh and new and MINE, a secret club of like minded people.

I can't lay claim to what you just said there but if not for SA I would not have been exposed to anything left of Clinton. My social set (extremely limited) would have defined my political landscape and I would be here crying tears for big poppa trump. Probably. I don't know I'd at least have had The Daily Show to watch at night. It couldn't have been that dire. Maybe I just take what I want from what I get and I'd always be a socialist. I agree muchly with that last part. We don't really know if we are the hive mind, can complete each other's sentences, and maybe it's better left unspoken.

Hello, thread. I would have posted sooner but I didn't even know this thread existed. I don't get on much anymore, and when I do I stay in TVIV or AI. Somethingawful dot com saved my life. There was a thread eleven years ago. I posted in BFC because my wife had lost her job and I had a bunch of bills to pay. I did not realize at the time just how in trouble I was - over 40k in debt. After a lot of denial, and arguing, and drama, BFC helped me get my financials back on track. The thread spans three years but I created a budget, tracked my debt monthly and clawed my way out of debt. Today I still have no debt (apart from a mortgage and two cars that are almost paid off...) OK I have no credit card debt. I still keep my budget up to date. I have two kids and buy what I want and largely don't worry about money like I used to. I can only imagine where I would be without the hard truths I learned here. Somethingawful dot com saved my life and I thank everybody here, even those not involved, from the bottom of my heart.

If you read my previous posts itt, you'll see I've hit some pretty rough patches that goons have helped me out through. My life has finally changed for the better --- I got a job and just landed an apartment --- and, unbidden, a goon sent me a HUGE gift card to Kroger so I can stock up my kitchen. Best loving housewarming present ever to this cook who hasn't had her own kitchen for 2 years.

4 years ago I left my ex-husband and a goon I'd never met in person let me move 8 hours back to the town my family lived in and stay with them for a number of months. I was jobless and almost penniless, and had nowhere to go. Now life is going fairly well for me. Around that same time I started a fundraiser for a Canadian goon who's electricity was going to be shut off in the dead of winter. The goal was around 1,000 and I think the goons I asked for help ended up tripling that. They got them out of some serious credit card debt in addition to getting their power turned back on. I joined the forums in my teens and have basically had lifelong friends from this experience. (I'm still friends with the kid who paid for my account because I was too young to have a credit card to use, but we've never met in person.) I'm 32 now. As others have said, this forum has definitely changed my life.

I’m still friends with someone I met at a London meet 10 years ago, and through them I met a whole host of cool people and went to some truly fabulous parties. We were never really that close but over the last couple of years we’ve connected more and now it feels like this person really values me as a friend - I was among the first people they spoke to about some really huge changes they were making in their life. I feel privileged that a couple of drunk goonmeets led to a long-lasting and open friendship. I met someone else who it turned out was a goon. I recognised one of their tattoos in the tattoo megathread. This discovery has given us something extra to connect around, and as small as that may be it's been fun talking to someone about the forums from time to time. I’ll echo what others have said when they describe the journey from miserable edgelord to being a liberal, sensible adult. SA has been alongside me throughout that and will have influenced all parts of the journey. There’s a thread for everything and I will have learnt heaps through random browsing and absorption. None of this is life-saving but it has been helpful and enjoyable and has influenced me in a big way, and I am really grateful for the experiences I’ve had as a result. I’ve been here for about 15 years, registered for 13. I was a kid when I started browsing and I can’t quite imagine not killing time on SA, even though I only tend to occupy a few subforums and threads on the whole. luv u SA xxx

A goon in this very thread offered me access to their Netflix account, as a distraction from my former woes, which I'm finally using now that I have solid internet and a place to plug in my monitor. Thanks to the goon who gave me the Kroger card, and this goon, I'm currently making homemade pasta sauce and about to binge some shows while eating a real healthy meal. Goons can and do make life good.

I went homeless this year. Despite me being a stickler, a friend goon pretty much ignored all the existing rules and tossed my paypal and patreon links around. I was able to be back in one day, out from a situation that I'm pretty sure was gonna be hellish. During that day I was moving, I got covid (I mean, that isn't surprising right), so Lord knows what the gently caress would have happened had I been gone for longer or exposed. While I'm still having rough patches here and there, the amount of donations and help I got was so overwhelming that I was able to get treatment for my health conditions and, well, live. To say that goons literally saved my life would be an understatement. I guess most of all I felt cared for, in a way that, while in the depths, I forgot was possible.

Something Awful has genuinely made me a better person. Through broadening my world, connecting me with other people in it, showing inspiring examples of compassion and generosity, helping me to better align my beliefs with reality, teaching me dozens of new things, and of course, endless hours of entertainment and laughter. I've even found love thanks to the connections I've made. I have bought at least five accounts for new goons in the hopes that they benefit even marginally from this place as I have. And I'll continue to bring new people in. These forums, you goons, have quite literally helped to save me from an early death either at my own hands due to depression or at someone else's hands for being a loudmouth. Y'all can tell I'm still the loudmouth, though. Far from discouraging me about our future, this place actually gives me hope for humanity and I do not say that lightly. I love this place and I love you goons.

While reading the eating disorders thread in E/N and seeing all the posters describe their NOS symptoms I realized that a client of mine who had been describing symptoms like loss of motivation, brain fog, reduced appetite, and difficulty swallowing wasn't having a reaction to medication, but was actually having an eating disorder relapse. They were able to get into treatment despite the pandemic, specifically a fantastic combined ED and Trauma clinic. Their symptoms improved dramatically over the course of that time, and they're more able to focus on the things that brought them into therapy in the first place. I am *not* an eating disorder specialist, I'd absolutely have missed this for several more weeks had I not stumbled across a thread. Goons are helping people completely unrelated to the site, and I am extremely grateful.

Goons didn’t save my life, but they saved someone else’s. GPF had a thread in The Goon Doctor about his struggles finding a kidney. I thought I’d get tested to see if I matched him. Long story short, he got a cadaver kidney at the last minute, but because I’d already gone through a bunch of testing, I decided to donate to a stranger. My kidney went to North Carolina, and someone has a new lease on life. Never would have gotten involved if it wasn’t for the thread.

Met my first friends in a new city when I posted a "Come to my place for a new year's eve party" thread somewhere and had 4 great goons end up in my place drinking and cracking wise. Kept in touch with all of them, one got me an apartment closer to downtown, one I ended up working with, one has moved very far away but who I still see on the nets here and there. The last one was a roommate for a while, but has since disappeared sadly. I think he had a poo poo ton of bitcoin at one point when we were roomies. The best part of this is that while playing internet spaceships with the goon I was working with, we heard the same fire truck go by in the microphone of another person playing in the same teamspeak channel. Like it was going down the street, was picked up by my friend's mic, and then 10 seconds later, a rando heard the same firetruck racing down the same street. We immediately made plans to meet up and the rando turns out, worked on the same "block" as us. That rando is now one of my closest friends, is expecting a child soon, and moved to the suburbs near my wife and I. A close companion and a true friend, we still laugh about butts and idiotic photoshops though we're near our 40's. If I hadn't posted an idiot thread to try to make some friends in a new city, I may still be alone in my bedroom with no life and no drive, hiding from the scary world of successful people, seething and jealous. As it stands, I'm rather well-adjusted, good at most social interactions, and not scared of folks I've just met, though I'm still shy mostly.... I like to think that the forums and the culture of laughing at and with the offensive, obscene, idiotic, and esoteric gave me confidence to approach any situation with a very useful eye for detail. Thanks goons. Thoons. fake edit: skip this post and read the kidney post instead holy poo poo piss

I never had my life saved by a goon or these forums, nor do I have any stories like those of Domus or some of the earlier posters, but I have gotten lots of help, directly or indirectly, from here. Off the top of my head, these forums... - Helped me make some friends after university through goon meets, although the regular meetups died off way before COVID-19; - Guided me and followed me on my journey to improve my fitness (what's up, Shine and YLLS); - Instructed me quite a bit on how to budget, invest money, and save for retirement; and - Made me appreciate a relatively-stable community whose page layouts are so much better than any other social media's site. I would like to say that thanks to the goons here, I have been able to give back to the community too. With what I learned from here, I have... - Donated, and continue to donate, money to needy, hungry goons via the Goon Fund; - Passed on knowledge to other people about passive investing and retirement, after much self-teaching and re-reading BFC posts; and - Given my family and friends the motivation to work out and improve themselves due to my changing habits.
