For us: two loving years battling with the council to get planning permission, including an appeal. One year back and forth with an Engineer sorting out a roof design that seemed like a simple choice when we made it but has turned out to be extraordinarily challenging. Six months to find a builder. We're about two feet out of the ground now, having started the process in Autumn 2017. Still don't have water or electricity to the plot because the solicitor didn't register our ownership up to the boundary, and the utility companies won't lay services through land you can't prove you own.
Very satisfying seeing it going up though.

Yoinks.. sounds a bit of nightmare.

I just fancy something small, maybe a couple rooms downstairs & an attic bedroom + a garage on the side.
I'm splitting up with the misses & should get 1/2 of the house value minus what's left on the mortgage.

Other options I've looked at have been boats, seems like you can get some pretty sweet deals.

It's going to be worth it, I think. We were just lucky to have that many problems.
Wor lass lived on a boat for a few years. They're nice, but definitely have an "off the grid" feel. A decent moorings is quite a bohemian place where you find washed up hippies and van people, so they can be really lovely communities.
Pros include watching a heron while having a cuppa on deck in the morning. Cons are emptying a bucket full of sawdust and turds onto the communal compost heap.
Have a look on Apolloduck and halve the asking prices for an idea of what they go for. Boats tend to depreciate like cars rather than appreciate like houses too. If you decide to go ahead, get it properly lifted out and surveyed before you put money down. Everyone skimps on this and everyone regrets it.

Trying to make a very minor adjustment to planning when heritage England, still sulking cos they don't want a house there at all, chuck a spammer in the works so it needs to go to a committee vote then a pandemic happens and nobody goes to work any more lol kill me

Oh and day 1 of digging building inspector turning up and telling us the groundworker contractor is wrong and we can't do strip foundations, that we need an engineered piled foundation.

Finally renting thousands of pounds of plant to do it myself because the digger you've already bought is ancient and proper poo poo, them getting yourself admitted to hospital for being a bellend and having it all sitting there idle.

I already killed defiled amy. Had less of a hard time with it than hotdog. Got down to the headless bloodletting beast this morning and got really close to killing it but got ganked by the snake when I backed off to heal and regroup before making my final attack.

Burnt out and taking a break since I pretty much played bloodborne for like 10 hours straight yesterday
