I desperately want a complete engine switch to Unreal because seeing the commandos tie themselves in knots over comparisons to Duke Nukem will be hilarious.

The magic of star citizen is to fail for ages and then pretend this was all part of the plan. This works because they are doing the super hard never been done before tech the tried and tested narrative. Once X is in the game it will come together. Then.... oh well of course we also need Y this was always part of the plan, we have been working on this part for 8 years already it was just held back by X ... rinse repeat.

But an engine switch would really bring out some of the finest mental gymnastics.

We knew all along that cry engine was not going to be the final solution!

The must be able to license all their new tech for a really good deal!

The new engine will really allow us to speed up development!

With all the knowledge they have built up in Cryengine, unreal development should be a breeze!

The difference between Cryengine and unreal is really very minor!

I mean all these features out of the box were copied from CIG anyways... so they will make them better!

Imagine how much more money they could get with an epic exclusive!

Game development is hard we were always along for the ride!

Even after a few years of staring into the endless void of the Star Citizen community, I can’t believe that people are still pouring money into this dumpster fire. Like it’s been a year of nothing but CIG making zero progress and showing naked contempt for its bakers.

I went for $342M while I was personally thought this was outrageously high but i have been staggered repeatedly by how little progress matters to the massive dump of cash they get for the sale and citcon. Last year was really terrible, the citcon was mega wet, and the big finish was a sad Chris with his what is release speech.... instead of the wheels starting to wobble or come off its just a cash downpour and it makes no sense. This yea has been a train smash, but here we are at 60+ Million.

It is super sad to watch gaming now thriving on these different versions of ongoing transactions, it is clear to me it's not players enjoying a game or putting in a little extra money into a game they love. It's the transactions themselves that provide the good feeling. The game merely provides access to this transaction.

SC is objectively failing to deliver a fun playable game year after year, but because its transactions are rewarding it's a commercially successful venture, game story or playable experience not required.

This is why the go to such lengths to keep it a positive echo chamber, I would expect a change in sentiment towards the game to be their biggest risk. The good feeling effect that the transaction provides and suddenly is not there, there is no game to fall back on. So funding would plummet in a short space of time.

I would be interested to see the funding profile of other free to play games over their life cycle that rely on these type of ongoing transactions.

I'm finding it hilarious so far that people would still throw money into this project and the funniest part of all this is that :reddit: is corroborative. So even if the tracker might be rigged, there is still some blatant truth to it that shitizens don't want this rainbow train ride to neverland to end.

In return, their “advisor/mentor” may reward them with a “stipend” for their excellent “participation” in the “development” of this “game.”

This game depresses me. It's a microcosm of Western Civilization; where you're so priveleged you can just denied reality for what seems like forever. For the amount of money SC has eaten up we could have had something that really pushes us forward, not just in games but again, for this amount of money, all of human civilization. Instead we just get this lovely no clip demo because our society has so much extra wealth it can just deny reality presumably until it's literally impossible to do so any longer.

You can't gift ships that cost over a thousand dollars, therefore ships like the Perseus ($675) are extremely attractive to people who would like to buy friendships in the 'verse. It's yet another monetization trick that SC uses.

lol, without SC that money would have been invested in bitcoin, helping pump millions of tons of extra CO2 into the atmosphere. At least the JPEG money goes into feeding the developer's families and is not literally set on fire.

Not sure we should trust that 3 million in a day is an accurate representation of the money coming in from backers but there is definitely "some" money coming in, for sure.

The fact backers are still supporting this dumpster fire is a combination of many factors I think. First there are indeed, I suspect, many a backer that are not really bothered by the development news and problems or its history, gamers that do not have any idea about DNF, Daikatana, Godus or similar disasters. People that honestly and naively think that when a developer says he will do something he will do it, no question about it. Then there is all the grey market that buy speculatively new concepts or ships "en masse" for the hope of prices going up as promised by CIG, and last but not least there is all the sunk cost and mofo by existing backers.

I suspect the pledge counter is far from properly reflecting the actual figure, but also do not doubt there is plenty actual pledging going on.

I'm sticking to my guns that the tracker was always 100% fake. It always ticks toward the operating capital they have, and doesn't exceed it, but the moment to moment pledge amounts etc. are run by an algorithm that they dial up and down as they see fit to manipulate backers into seeing purchasing behavior they want to be part of.

Calders give them $25 million? That'll be leaked into the tracker over the following months. Got a bank loan for 10 million? Load that new upper number into the tracker and get that algorithm ticking towards it.

CIG lies and commits fraud for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and there's no logical reason to give the funding tracker, the essential core of their grift, any more credibility than the rest of the company's bed of lies.
