I don't know exactly when Ernest Cline wrote that awful porn polemic but the fact he doesn't seem to be aware of the existence of the Suicide Girls or that they've been a thing for like 20+ years makes it even more pathetic.

Bismuth posted:"short" references maybe, but the book's entire foundation is referencing other properties, I feel like disney or hasbro could add up every reference to one of their properties and come up with 1/3+ of the book that is entirely using them as life support theres a difference between referencing an intellectual property ("he saw the latest transformers movie") and using its characters and writing them as your own ("optimus prime looked soulfully into megatrons eyes as he withdrew his dipstick") ready player one has at least its own 'world' as a foundation, as shallow as it is, and that gives it a degree of freedom in referencing said material. also all the characters know and acknowledge that references come from fictional/outside sources, instead of it being written as if it were a "reality" for said characters

I'm glad we're still making GBS threads on this book years later. It's genuinely bad in so many ways. I'm too high to effort post about it but the worst parts have to be a tie between the rant about masturbation or the Japanese players telling Wade that he is an honarable samurai.

It's closer to a screed than a rant I'd say. But yeah it's embarassing as all gently caress and I hate it especially for how it repeats that fallacy that seems pretty common that if you're a geek you're good at science and vice versa and that obviously being scientists, Einstein and Marie Curie had to have been geeks who couldn't get laid and therefore depended upon masturbation. I loving hate it. Anyway I bet alot of the owners of the properties and prodcuts mentioned in the book were okay with it, because by way of the book's popularity and success I bet it served as a pretty good advertisement for a lot of this poo poo. And there does seem to be a subset of "geek culture" where people strive to outwardly signal how much they are into the things they should be into as part of that dumb culture, and I bet this book did a lot of heavy lifting in, maybe not defining, but codifying what those things cold and should be.

My best friend's older brother (who I believe is about to turn 40?) is the target demographic for this poo poo. He still lives, mentally, in the 80s and 90s and has no self awareness. It's kind of disturbing to witness. I'm pretty sure he thinks that "Ultimate Showdown for Ultimate Destiny" song is the pinnacle of songwriting, simply from all of the references in it. My friend said recently, of his brother, "I think he's had a very dissatisfying adulthood, and the past gives him comfort. I think he always imagined he'd be world famous for one of his many dabblings by now." By dabblings, he's referring to various barely started projects (novels, songs, etc) that were quickly abandoned after they started. He's now started a FB page/group (I can't remember) where once a day he sings in a video. He is the only person in the world who genuinely thinks he's got a good voice, no one tells him otherwise. Also, he's already missed a bunch of days. ANYWAY, I believe he's pumped for RP2.

Any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. Is the bar for using a real person's name or likeness without their permission a lot higher? If that was the case, could Cline have hosed up by including Prince? Prince was pretty litigious about copyright when he was alive, I dunno how much his estate is carrying that on now that he's kicked it. Also I guess Cline could have gotten permission from the estate.

It's about signaling that he don't like society's beauty standards, and thus women who feel upset and restricted by those standards (which is secretly almost every woman) should totally gently caress him because he will actually appreciate them. It's casting a net for "not like other girls" girls, appealing to their subconscious misogyny by talking about how smart and cool they are while simultaneously talking poo poo about other women (who are all "fake" and "bimbos"). The guy was about average misogynistic for the 60s and 70s. He was predatory to women sexually, but good to them as co-workers and fellow scientists. I feel like the most lasting damage was writing that story the way he did and presenting it as an example other nerds would follow. Also as dumb as the Ready Player One masturbation screed is, it's also just a short rehash of the much longer (and equally embarrassing) essays on the subject in Cryptonomicon. Because Ernest Cline has never had an original thought.

Elderbean posted:Hydrogen has one proton, right? Shouldn't you be knocking protons off multiple atoms? I cannot emphasize enough that this part in RP1 is Wade literally stopping the plot from progressing to recite this entire passage from Halliday's journal, while also describing how he spent like a week with an OASIS-compatible sexbot and virtual brothels (the same kind of job his mom had when she died of a speedball overdose) before feeling dirty and getting rid of it. He did this because the girl he had a crush on stopped talking to him when he tried to learn her real name. He later hacks IOI and gets her personal file to find out her name, address, and appearance and she forgives him almost instantly when he tells her this because he's saving the virtual world from being monetized. RP2 actually ramps up the weird sex and relationship poo poo.
