This just popped up from the Independent, answers my question from yesterday about time to sign off the deal:

quote:

Struggling Brexit trade negotiations between the EU and UK will not continue past Wednesday, Michel Barnier has said.
The EU’s chief negotiator told MEPs in a closed meeting on Monday morning that talks were now in their “endgame” and would need to be wrapped up in the coming days.
The deadline comes ahead of a summit of the 27 EU prime ministers and presidents in Brussels on Thursday. The meeting is widely seen as the last formal opportunity for the EU leaders to sign off a deal.

Also it won't connect to older tablets/phones by bluetooth

I can see why that person is angry, but that sort of clause wouldn't be much different to the one doctors who are opposed to abortion have - where they are allowed to refuse to refer a patient on (although I think most just ask the patient to see one of their colleagues who isn't opposed).
As long as there's another registrar who can carry out the marriage in the same sort of time-frame - and the bigot person with objections doesn't cause a ruckus about it - I don't see it being a huge issue.

Of course, if the plan is to go back and remove those sort of 'conscientious objector' clauses, then that's also fair enough. Albeit that's when the Freeze Peach lawyers start limbering up.

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

It's your job to carry out that function on behalf of, in the case of registrars, literally the organization that has a monopoly on that function. And in the case of doctors, functionally an organization that has the same monopoly. If you don't want to do your job you can gently caress off, IMO.

Aren't we literally running low on the water treatment chemicals we rely on for the mains supply? Which wouldn't mean all tap water turning to bog mulch overnight, but could definitely result in water restrictions for a time.

Although in that case I'd probably replace my drinking water with whiskey and just try to forget everything forever.

Nah, that was a bit of a scare story about Brexit. There's currently no UK source for several chemicals used in water treatment, and disruption of those supplies would have caused problems. In particular one chemical (sodium hypochlorite - the active ingredient in household bleach) isn't amenable to stockpiling because it degrades quickly and has specialist storage requirements, and it was theorised that the tankers getting caught at customs could disrupt fresh water supply.

However chlorination of tap water is only used in certain conditions - ordinary filtration normally gets rid of most of the bad poo poo, and the consumables for that are all available in-country. The very worst-case scenario would have been boil-before-use orders in areas where certain bacteria get into the supply and the chlorination wasn't available, and even that was extremely unlikely because it doesn't come in just in the back of a lorry, it comes in through a specialist port, so delays were never particularly likely.

Try Lagavulin then Laphroig, which even though they're made on the same island are about as far apart taste-wise as it's possible for two liquids to get.
