I'm not super-familiar with the CA legal system but, I think in a lot of jurisdictions saying stuff like "as a matter of policy we're not going to pursue the death penalty in criminal cases" is about as firm as you can get since he can't overturn the death penalty by himself. There were some generals and admirals appointed when the position was still Secretary of War/the Navy, but appointing flag officers to the cabinet was never very common and certainly not recent.

It’s a civilian position for a reason and putting a career military guy in there so soon after retirement, even if it was someone as respected as Mattis, never sat well with me. I would prefer there be no prior flag officers (and maybe even senior officers which I believe is O-6 and above?) in those positions at all, not even with a grace period.

I'm also extremely worried since there's going to be resistance and if it goes bad it may never be tried on such a large scale again. Still, for as poo poo as the last 4 years have been if his actions have the intended effect he could almost balance out Trumps misery (at least with COVID but the prison numbers are bad).
