The lights from the braindance effect (at last what we've been shown in the publicly available videos) looks more like the light on my nightstand or any number of generic off the shelf flip up reading lights and the effect is a fairly generic flash (my first thought was it looked like any memory flash device used in a movie ever, like say the Men In Black movies) from a sci-fi movie that has a slight strobing effect, presumably to be just a bit different and unique. Which is regrettable if that causes a seizure and should be adjusted or maybe turned off with a setting, and yet somehow people jump to this must have been intentional because there isn't any possible other explanation or similar design in light fixtures that could possible explain this happening other than someone at CDPR has it out for epileptics and is secretly trying to induce seizures for the fun of it.

She has played very few video games in her life. She loves Overcooked but that’s basically it. However, she’s currently playing Breath of the Wild and, while she’s struggling to learn to play a 3d game, she is managing (she mitigates the difficulty by avoiding combat whenever possible.)

She’s expressed interest in playing a game together, and I figured it might be nice as she becomes more comfortable with using a controller and controlling a 3rd person camera that we be able to play a game together. Something where I can help her out.

I was thinking that the fairly constrained camera of Resident Evil 5 might make it a good choice, but I forgot that it doesn’t have local multiplayer.

Switch, PS4, and Steam are all fair play.
Check out A Way Out on the PS4. Imo it's perfect for an advanced and a beginner player to play together on the couch. It's what I played with my gf in a similar situation that you're in.

I had a good time recently with Children of Morta.

I believe Gears 5 has local split-screen co-op for the *campaign* (and only this mode.)

Also, this site is a pretty good resource for all things co-op: https://www.co-optimus.com/games.php

Does it need to be strictly co-op, or just local multiplayer?

SpeedRunners is an arcadey, platforming footrace that works great with local multiplayer, and you can add some AI opponents to keep the game exciting, each race is just a couple of minutes long. It's a lot of fun.

I've had similar questions trying to get my partner into some games we could play together and checked co-optimus before, but the problem is the filtering isn't the best so there's no way to filter to "games my casual gamer GF might enjoy" or anything like that.

After binging it this week I can say the game you're looking for is Haven.

A light co-op RPG about a young couple who ran away from home to be together. The gameplay is fairly simple and the characters and their relationship are goddamned incredible.

Haven't played it myself, but people in the new releases thread are complaining a bit that the couple is talking about sex constantly and that the ending is kind of weak, so caveat emptor.

My wife and I really enjoyed Biped.

You’re two cute little robots and control them by having one analogue stick for each of their legs. My wife is not good at using both analogue sticks but got through it just fine without any frustration.

Disgaea games are all pretty much just iterative improvements on the same basic formula, so chances are good that if you liked any one of them, you will probably like all of them.

I gather that 5 changed up some of the long-standing systems. Some people had gotten tired of them by D4 and welcomed the change, the people who disliked 5 seem to be more die-hard purists. I'm not sure exactly what systems were changed or how, though, and every entry in the series past D1 has been completely impenetrable for me.

It plays more like a twin stick shooter than the point and click style it looks like. I thought it had great concepts but the actual mechanics didn't connect with me and trying to manage the pets seems like it'd be a nightmare over time.

I'm gonna push back on this because it really isn't as bad as that one guy in the new releases thread is making it sound. Like yeah, the characters have sex and talk about it; they're a couple in their early 20s. But this isn't a porn game, nothing explicit is shown and it's only one facet of their relationship. If anything, it's kinda nice for a romantic story to make clear that yeah, sex is part of a good relationship but it isn't the end-all-be-all.

I'm not gonna pretend that watching a well-established early-20s couple interact is going to be everyone's cup of tea, especially in this thread, but Haven is probably one of the best depictions of "real-world" love I've seen, despite the sci-fi trappings. If that doesn't strike your interest, that's cool, but if it does then it's really worth playing.

Thanks for the thoughts, I was assuming it was a more diablo-like point and click. I've never really enjoyed twin stick shooter style controls, so this is a bit of a turn off for me

I recently played like 3 hours in remote play co-op. It was fun but we didn't really see any fancy systems outside the in-universe collectible card game, which was fairly interesting. Other than that the game felt like a somewhat simple hack and slash RPG with neat exploration but also some old-school grind? We spent a while rerunning a sewer section to collect rat asses for a cooking quest cause we kept messing up the recipe. Neither of us had an INT based character so our crafting chances were abysmally low even with some skill bonuses to it, seemed like a bit of an oversight intimately tying crafting to that. Things like monster traps also seemed very expensive, at least at the beginning, so we couldn't get into that before we took a break.

It was ok. We want to get back into it at some point but it didn't set our world on fire. I think it's worth a look for the current price.

It's definitely not that. You move with WASD/the left stick and attack in any given direction using your mouse/right stick. You also have skills tied to hotkeys.

Huge fan of D5 and put 100+ hours in. Currently playing D4, and my thoughts are: yes, if you really like Disgaea and you've taken a decent break from D5. The quality of life is of course less, the level design is a lot more puzzle-like, there are mechanical differences but it's largely the same game. Can't speak on postgame yet, but I am 9f the understanding D5 has most content rich postgame.

I probably wouldn't go any further back unless you really like the stories. D1 is abysmal for a person who started on D5 and doesn't give a hoot about plot in these games

The manager DLC completely trivializes the business running mini game, and that’s a good thing. It’s not terribly involved so having an “I win” button is nice.

I picked up the DLC that adds more jobs and it's pretty alright, though I'm not deep enough into their skills to really know how they stack up against the vanilla classes. Equipment for the DLC jobs also seems really sparse but maybe I just need to unlock more shops.

A steam review claims there's exactly one weapon you can get besides the one you get handed for equipping the job, for each of them.

The DLC job weapons are all found in a hidden shop unlocked in chapter 9, started from a substory in the Survive Bar. There's a guy blocking a ladder on the riverbank next to Kinka Pharmacy, if you have enough Confidence he will let you pass and this unlocks a gambling hall.

The store, when unlocked, is in the same location.

Yeah, they're expensive too. You also have to max out the social ranks for your party members before they can switch to the jobs, so you aren't going to get much out of them until the mid-late game. Once you get them and get the weapons though (make sure to upgrade them) the classes are pretty cool and provide some variety and powerful late game options. If you aren't even sure if you'll like the game yet it might be best to wait and see if you want to pick them up still when you're a couple dozen hours in.

Yeah, the manager dlc is pretty much just "I don't want to put effort into this minigame" but don't help avoid the actual problem with the minigame which is that it largely just consists of you holding down fast-forward until you get your salary. The effort to match up managers is the only interesting thing happening so I imagine removing it would just exacerbate how uninvolved the whole thing is.

I liked the pre-order costume dlc because some of the job costumes are pretty boring but I don't think I'd buy the extra one.

I'm going to pick up the job dlc after I finish the story.

The karoke dlc is a complete waste of money.

Ibb & Obb is a great little co-op puzzle platformer I never see anybody talking about. Only left, right, and jump as controls, but the level design is great. Several optional extra-hard areas you can get to that I never bothered with because I never found half of them and the rest don't have much incentive besides the self-imposed challenge.
