I've been learning to kill and dress sheep and chickens recently as its a valuable skill to know and we're aiming at being totally self sufficient.

If you're gonna eat meat, the most sustainable way to do so is via animals you raise and butcher yourself.

Def not everyone's cup of tea though

Those water studies linked earlier said that (at least for cows) that's actually the absolute worst way to raise em', water-wise anyway. I guess it's cancelled out though in that it's significantly more of a pain in the rear end on your part so you'll wind up using way less cow product in general.

My parents and their friends used to create hours and hours of drinking time by giving us kids a piece of fishing line, a hook, and some raw bacon to single catch crayfish. The trick was to float above them on an air mattress and lure them out from their hiding spots with the bacon. They would take it and not let go, allowing you to drag them up high enough to scoop with a net. I got really freaking good at it and there was always a competition to see who could get the biggest one but this would be a very difficult and inefficient way to find sustenance when it's much easier to trap them by the hundreds with an old refrigerator or whatever.

When I was a kid me and the neighbor kid would just like, go down and grab em' with our bare hands, cuz they lived in the ditch near his house and were easy to catch. Then we would pretend they were pokeymans.

Yeah I mean emptying a crab pot is probably easier, but licenses for those are akin to NY City taxi medallions and a bit hard to come by. But anyone with a regular license can run a thousand feet of trot line.

Plus it would be a good opportunity for some "choking the chicken" jokes.

A few years ago, a friend and I killed, dressed and ate a bird. That event was a big contributor to me going vegan not too long after. I felt ashamed that we took its life for a couple miserable pieces of meat. It's not like we were going hungry, we had plenty of food.

Lmao this seems like the perfect way to build up tolerance to those drugs that make drinking unpleasant as fast as possible

Their website is pretty great too:

https://lifebac.com/

30 million people won't seek treatment for their alcoholism, because then they'd have to give up alcohol, can't argue with that.

quote:

The Disease Model can even be harmful
It labels people “alcoholics” for life and creates undue shame and stigma around seeking help when most people who over-drink aren't alcoholics and simply want to drink less.

I'm definitely not an alcoholic I just somehow can't stop drinking alcohol it's different shut up.

quote:

It's not the alcohol...
Alcohol overindulgence is related to the same neurological reward pathways as gambling, sex, food, and porn.5 Addiction is in the brain, not the substance. 20% of returning soldiers from Vietnam identified themselves as heroin addicts upon being shipped home. 95% of them successfully discontinued heroin use upon returning. This video from Johanne Hari exposes the myth of the “chemical hook”

So the actual drug they're pushing is baclofen

Wikipedia posted:

Discontinuation of baclofen can be associated with a withdrawal syndrome which resembles benzodiazepine withdrawal and alcohol withdrawal.
...
Withdrawal symptoms may include auditory hallucinations, visual hallucinations, tactile hallucinations, delusions, confusion, agitation, delirium, disorientation, fluctuation of consciousness, insomnia, dizziness, nausea, inattention, memory impairments, perceptual disturbances, itching, anxiety, depersonalization, hypertonia, hyperthermia (higher than normal temperature without infection), formal thought disorder, psychosis, mania, mood disturbances, restlessness, and behavioral disturbances, tachycardia, seizures, tremors, autonomic dysfunction, hyperpyrexia (fever), extreme muscle rigidity resembling neuroleptic malignant syndrome and rebound spasticity.

Great!

quote:

In his 2008 book, Le Dernier Verre (translated literally as The Last Glass or The End of my Addiction), French-American cardiologist Olivier Ameisen described how he treated his alcoholism with baclofen. Inspired by this book, an anonymous donor gave $750,000 to the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands to initiate a clinical trial of high-dose baclofen, which Ameisen had called for since 2004.[24] The trial concluded, "Neither low nor high doses of baclofen were effective in the treatment of [alcohol dependence]. Adverse events were frequent, although generally mild and transient. Therefore, large-scale prescription of baclofen for the treatment of AD seems premature and should be reconsidered."[25]
...
Baclofen is being studied for the treatment of alcoholism.[11] Evidence as of 2019 is not conclusive enough to recommend its use for this purpose.

Oh also it doesn't work. Good luck!

e: Oh the lifebac website actually talks about Oliver Ameisen, but not the follow-up study, weird I'm sure they just forgot

I’m really surprised they didn’t mention Albertsons. They basically followed what Kroger did when it came to hazard pay and bonuses. This week we got a bonus of $100 for part timers and $200 for full timers for our hard work from May to November. Its laughable compared to what other companies have paid their employees.

Every dollar that American's would otherwise be spending taking their kids to get a lovely burger at Applebee's is going to take-out places and supermarkets, no poo poo they're raking in record profits. They basically absorbed an entire industry.

I think one of my friends who works at Whole Foods got a temporary $2 / hour pay raise that expired months ago. They also gave her no paid time off after she had a baby last month and are on the verge of firing her if she doesn't pick up hours again soon

We should be encouraging the development of new recreational drugs to replace the old problematic drugs in our lives. Drugs that make you feel nice and loose and pro-social, but don't leave a hangover or develop dependencies. Maybe if you take too much, you just fall asleep before you can OD. You could also develop mild hallucinogens that give you a trippy visual experience for a few hours, then wears off gently, no harsh comedown. Fun for a party or a concert or a night at home staring at swarms of spiders on the ceiling with the whole family. Save the heavy entheogens for guided therapy sessions.

Slavoj Zizek, "First as Tragedy, Then as Farce posted:

Our most elementary experience of subjectivity is that of the "richness of my inner life": this is what I "really am;' in contrast to the symbolic determinations and responsibilities I assume in public life (as father, professor, etc.). The first lesson of psychoanalysis here is that this "richness of inner life" is fundamentally fake: it is a screen, a false distance, whose function is, as it were, to save my appearance, to render palpable (accessible to my imaginary narcissism) my true social-symbolic identity. One of the ways to practise the critique of ideology is therefore to invent strategies for unmasking this hypocrisy of the "inner life" and its "sincere" emotions. The experience we have of our lives from within, the story we tell ourselves about ourselves in order to account for what we are doing, is thus a lie--the truth lies rather outside, in what we do.

For example, in January 2003, the IDF demolished the house of the family of a suspected terrorist. They did it with accentuated kindness, even helping the family to move the furniture out before destroying the house with a bulldozer. A similar incident was reported a little bit earlier in the Israeli press. When an Israeli soldier was searching a Palestinian house for suspects, the mother of the family called her daughter by her name in order to calm her down, and the surprised soldier learned that the frightened girl’s name was the same as his own daughter’s. In a sentimental upsurge, he pulled out his wallet and showed her picture to the Palestinian mother.

It is easy to discern the falsity of such a gesture of empathy: The notion that, in spite of political differences, we are all human beings with the same loves and worries, neutralizes the impact of what the soldier is effectively doing at that moment. The only proper reply of the mother should be to demand that the soldier address this question: “If you really are human like me, why are you doing what you are doing now?”
