Um, people do want a colour blind toggle yes? That’s an easy one, just have a toggle colour X to colour Y. The epilepsy one would require devs to have a “Flag flashing lights” sign on the desk in front of them so they can be turned off, or worst case given an option to skip that level with all bonuses.

Btw in that cyberpunk video some epileptics would not have made it to the flashing sign, before he enters it goes from dark to a flash on a puddle which is also bad.

A curious little mouse!

I honestly don't understand why people would be against adding these kinds of things. Accessibility options are enormously helpful even if you're able to play games without them. I have problems with my hearing, so I always have subtitles on, but I would be glad to turn off flashing lights even though I don't have epilepsy. Control customization, clean/clear UI, and many of the other potential features listed on that website are just a part of good game design. It's stuff that makes games better for everyone.

Probably for the same reason people refuse to wear masks - they don't care about stuff that affects other people.

What happens if I turn on epilepsy mode and something triggers a seizure anyway (unintentional graphics glitch, for example). Would the standard "we're not responsible for any seizures" in the EULA be enough to protect them from litigation?

Probably, since I'm betting "epilepsy mode" wouldn't be called that, nor use the phrase "epilepsy" in its description, so anyone still affected wouldn't be able to claim "the game said it would be fine."

I'm not a creative genius like CDPR, but if that visor is the only potentially triggering thing in the game it should be pretty easily changed. It's not like it's a crucial part of the lore. Except now that the Gamers have seen it, the feel that any change will ruin everything. Just make a slightly different transition animation when you put on the goggles.

Right, just because I don't use personally use an option doesn't mean I don't appreciate it's there. I like seeing options for different ways to experience the game.

I'm also a subtitles-always person. I don't think it's a hearing thing for me so much as it's just easier for me to parse written language. I have no idea why. Netflix, we need to have a conversation about how you're totally fine with the English dub and the subtitles being totally different scripts all the time, but also I still watch it like that because?????

I was playing Witcher 3 in Polish with English subtitles though because I couldn't stand Geralt's English voice. It was a wild time.

Fortunately, subtitles are on most things now. That's cool. That should be the norm for more things. Light sensitivity toggles, colourblind toggles, everything.

This has been a problem with localizations forever. Subtitles are usually direct translations of what's being said in the original language, and the dub is something edited to sound more natural being said out loud in english. It'd be smart to have both options for subtitles, but I don't know that anybody ever has.

e: The inverse of this happened to me once with one of the Drunken Master movies on netflix, where I realized about halfway through that subtitles for portions where nothing was being said were because the English dub probably had some line to fill the silence, and the subtitles were probably directly from the dub script.

Certain people just don't like change and get really upset when you suggest changing something they like, even if it is in ways that don't effect them at all. I remember people getting really defensive about making Discord more accessible to people who use screen readers and that was just behind the scenes code changes that wouldn't have any impact on anybody who doesn't use one.

I was really mad at Pixel Puzzle Dating Sim because I'd actually turned off the "Intense Graphic Effects" button as soon as I started the game, then the last 10 minutes were full of unavoidable lightning flashes behind the puzzles. (They just fixed this.)

They are certainly something you should be very careful about using, agreed. I think a lot of level designers are very impressed with the fact that they can and sometimes don't always think whether they should :v:

Plus even if you do want to have flickering lights you can do things to reduce the annoyingness while still having them look good.

Any time a developer changes anything about a game, someone's artistic vision is being compromised. The purest way to make a game is to code it straight through in one go with no revisions or QA.

It's from the people who made Witcher 3, which, while it wasn't a huge hit at any particular moment in time, was on sale frequently so a ton of people eventually played it and liked it a ton.
