I need some help with people that are better at decor than I am.

I don't remember if I posted about this here or another thread, but just want to give a shout out to the free color consultation services that Sherwin-Williams offers. They will do a 30min video chat with you and give you paint and color recommendations based on photos you send and ideas you have. I used this when trying to figure out what color I should change all my exterior trim to, since I have an ugly beige house I didn't want to entirely repaint and a brand new and even uglier red roof that I couldn't figure out how to match to. I found it to be really helpful in making my decision. Maybe you'd find it useful for this situation, AFewBricksShy.

@AFewBricksShy: if you want a real "bar feel" the walls should be darker, brown or dark green or red, with window treatments to match. Decor would depend on the specific aesthetic that you are going for. If you want the usual Man Cave then neon signs and old ads on the walls, miscellaneous tchotchkes, vintage 70s-style furniture and pretty much any rug(s) will do. If you're going for a classy rich guy look a large rug that's a neutral cream or matching the walls, plus art prints and glass doors on the shelves to show off your fanciest liquor bottles. Alternatively, if you have a lot of band posters and music paraphrenalia that can go on the walls you could make that the theme, still with darker paint but some brighter color here and there with the furniture and rugs.

I was thinking for the color of going with the green version of the blue that's in the next room. Benjamin Moore - Hamilton blue.

I think once a table goes in, there's not much room for other furniture.
70's style won't really work with the rest of the house, and I don't care for it all that much anyway.

I'm also not opposed to doing some sort of an accent wall on one of the walls.

I'm planning to at least look at the place, because it's small and basically one big room (bedroom is above and behind where the sink is, up a few stairs), and the price is pretty good. But being the rear end in a top hat that I am, I have to overanalyze everything. I think that kitchen "floor" is pretty egregious though

I'm sad because I thought that thing to the right of the microwave might have been some super cool built in fridge, but no it's just storage

I think so, more often in cases where they stick the microwave in the island. In this case I think it's because there is no upper cabinetry and there's a dedicated hood vent. If you don't use a microwave a lot I suppose it makes sense.

There really should be a few cabinets above the sink though, all that stuff sitting on a shelf is going to get pretty dusty. Putting in matching cabinets in that spot would definitely a be a high priority, along with the floor replacement. I suppose you could use that storage unit to the right of the microwave though.

Queen Anne. A style usually more associated with residences than larger buildings (Blair House was originally built as a fancy hotel) but it has all the high style features.

unfortunately the 2018 renovation heavily hosed with the interior (exterior probably is under historic protections)

When the Excelsior Group purchased the property in 2017, it undertook a massive renovation of the apartment building upgrading common areas and modernizing the apartments to appeal to younger residents.

Element’s repositioning strategy included orienting spaces around skylights and views to the outside, and exposing architectural features like brick ceilings and stone walls to increase the appeal to potential tenants. The common areas and exterior of the building have been transformed with a modern minimalist aesthetic that compliments the historic character of the building, revitalizing the property for a new generation of entrepreneurs and residents.

Our approach was to make a virtue of contrasting the Victorian character of Blair East with an unabashedly hip and modern interior, allowing each building its own clear identity, while a predominantly monochromatic black and white color palette establishes a narrative through-line between Blair past and Blair present and future.

I like the interior though :p

got the smooth ceilings, euro-style kitchen with frameless cabinets, built-in appliances and they even have a matching cabinet front on the fridge on the right

it definitely needs some color though, it's still reflecting the whole "everything must be white and gray" bullshit

i'm pretty sure we have opposing views on modernism though :)

At least it's not quite as terrible as my apartment kitchen, which I'm thankfully moving out of next week (even if I'm not totally eager to go back to gas appliances). I'm not sure who had the wise idea that opening the oven or the dishwasher each prevents access to all of the under-counter cabinetry, or that the stove needed a solid wall on the right side of it so you can't do anything without being directly over the heat source, but here we are.

gonna have an interior designer come over but I'm thinking about putting a short table lamp on the left side of the media unit, and then putting the art thing on the wall. this might negate the need to have that light in the corner (I typically have very low light due to my eyes)

ideally height would be around 10-12" with a diameter of 6-12". the distance from the top of the media unit to the top of that floor speaker is 21".

option 1 https://www.dwr.com/lighting-table-lamps/jwda-table-lamp/2515277.html?lang=en_US in concrete

only disadvantage is I don't want to have nothing but loving glowing spheres everywhere. would probably want to have my main floor lamp be a more typical lampshade style for variety

option 2 https://www.dwr.com/lighting-table-lamps/panthella-mini-table-lamp/2517941.html?lang=en_US probably in white

disadvantage: I don't think light will come through the "shade" at all so this is probably out. also not sure if the shape really works for what I want to do

option 3 https://www.dwr.com/lighting-table-lamps/elise-table-lamp/527.html?lang=en_US

disadvantage: too thin / not wide enough

option 4 https://www.dwr.com/lighting-table-lamps/ic-table-lamp/9092776.html?lang=en_US T1 high - black

disadvantage: FLOS prices, but would probably complement the media unit the best. the 11"x11"x11" is great sizing for the space.

option 5 https://www.bludot.com/bender-table-lamp.html in black

this lamp is amazing looking, but at 19" would be too tall I think.
