RandomFerret posted:Animal Crossing is the game of 2020. It's not the best looking, it's not the most fun, it's not the most influential, but it is the most important Agreed. It's not 100% my jam, I've bounced off of em pretty hard, but it came out at the right time and kept everyone's attention in a pretty awful time and then continued to deliver on content without any paid DLC. Really I'm just annoyed that FF7Remake lost immediately while fuckin Kentucky Route Zero gets a bye because Russ insists on putting Astros party hut on a list of the best games of 2020.

The same argument that makes Animal Crossing the game of 2020 makes Kentucky Route Zero the game of the 2010s. And neither are wrong.

Colonel Whitey posted:I watched Polygon stream Hades and I can’t imagine ever playing that game, looks way to chaotic and stressful I thought the exact same thing and put off buying it for quite a while because of that. It is far less chaotic when actually playing. I can’t watch someone play Hades because I get overwhelmed, but it’s probably my GOTY. (Animal Crossing is a bad game, with bad mechanics, bad multiplayer, bad design, and pretty good graphics. The fact that I put 150+ hours into it only says something about this year, and very little about the game.)

I got bored of Animal Crossing very quickly, maybe in part because I never played the old ones and don't have nostalgic feelings for it. Also those fake Nintendo Direct videos with the fake quality of life improvements just emphasized how annoying the actual game is to play, which is the opposite of relaxing imo. Hades, on the other hand, really is incredibly fun and deserves GOTY nods.

I love Animal Crossing for it being just a lil thing I do for about 40 mins every day. Just say hi to my animal pals, sell off fruit etc. It definitely has some things that could be improved on (holy poo poo the menus) but I still am a big fan. I'd probably put Hades over it though because a successful run feels reeeal good and the characters are all written so well. Also, since GOTY type things came up and the Geoff Awards were the other day, I have a question. I stopped listening to the Besties near the beginning of its return, how did the boys feel on Last of Us? A friend described it to me as oscar bait misery porn so of course it won big at those awards but how did the Besties take it? Good Listener fucked around with this message at 17:45 on Dec 13, 2020 |

If you're talking "best game of the year" it's probably Hades, but if you're talking "game that is so inextricably linked to 2020 that you'll never remember the game without remembering the year and vice versa", it's ACNH or Blaseball.

What I’m saying is I’m not very plugged in to the video gaming culture. Blaseball is sort of a shared hallucination that only exists on Twitter and Discord, so it's super easy to miss. It's also been on break while the devs smash out a bunch of code because they weren't expected this game to get at all, let alone quickly. The fact that it mostly exists on Twitter is also why it swept every poll it was in. The podcast does a good job of explaining why people are so into it and this video has a more in depth look https://youtu.be/Y5t8DwnDE1k

My GOTY is Red Dead Redemption 2 because I bought it late and actively put off the main story in favor of riding my pretty horse around pretty landscapes whenever I get free time to game. The gang leader “needs more money” to organize a trip to Tahiti when I’ve already put $400k in 2020 dollars in his coffers cmon son.

Animal Crossing, I bounced straight off of after seeing that it is probably the shallowest game ever made - you do pretty much every activity you'll ever do in the first two hours - i think it's a great "social space" or "design tool" but a boring game. The controls, UI, pace are all just so slow and plodding. It's fun to design an Island, but when I realise that the layout I want would take multiple weeks to accomplish.... no. That's not fun or rewarding. If I want to build something up slowly over weeks and months I'd pay attention to my job or family. The core loop of "collect stuff, sell it, pay for items/upgrades" is fine, but the RNG / gacha means that if you want to make a cool beach nightclub, and you don't get any cool beach nightclub furnitures, you just have to wait. It felt to me, and I'm aware that this is being dramatic, that I was gambling my time playing AC. I could spend 5 minutes logging on for a chance to get an item. If I didn't get what I wanted, it was a waste of time. Having a job and a family means that time is previous, and I don't want to spend that time in a slot machine for a digital DJ turntable every day. I do not understand how Griffin has the time to play multiple MMOs and stuff like AC to the level he does.

Also it's part of Griffin's job to play video games and talk about them on a podcast so he doesn't have the same constraints as the rest of us real job havin folks.
