Calling Shadowrun 6E a trash fire would be an insult to waste-to-energy plants worldwide. They actually do something useful and mostly properly.

SR6 is not well made. If you want to surpass SR6, the bar to pass is "functioning core mechanics".

The FnF write-up of Shadowrun 6e demonstrated that a 5-year old with a bike chain can easily dispatch a dude in full combat armor with a riot shield because in their Gear Porn game they accidentally made gear completely useless.

Shadowrun 6E is so badly designed that after Catalyst sent early copies of the game out to a youtube streaming group, that group eventually quit playing because it was just too broken and janky and put out a two hour video explaining why.

They’re so nice, too. They’re even trying to fix problems and those fixes break something else because the game is such a dumpster en flambé.

Shadowrun might be the worst RPG I've ever seen (from a mechanical standpoint) that somehow keeps releasing more and more editions that not only fail to improve the game, but somehow make parts of it worse.

Oh, no doubt about it. There's plenty to love in the setting. I don't even remember which edition it was, but when I ran SR like seven years ago I read through the book for a few days and then decided to homebrew rules to play it because that felt like less of a pain than trying to deal with that system.

I think the 1e -> 3e trajectory was improving the system, but then they started making much bigger, more sweeping changes and, well.

They might've actually learned their lesson this time, at least, considering how good Mechwarrior Destiny is compared to every other iteration of the Mechwarrior RPG.

That must be a very low bar because Mechwarrior Destiny was written by the same hacks who made Shadowrun Anarchy and it shows.

does shadowrun 6e still have the Extremely Cool rules/lore interaction of "Orcs and Trolls aren't any less intelligent than other races, we've realized that has extremely obvious racist implications, oops. Anyways here's the stat caps for all the races, Orcs and Trolls still have a notably lower max intelligence than everyone else."

I forget which edition I was reading when I last cared about the game but that got a good laugh out of me. Shadowrun has always been fraught with terrible ideas from naive white nerds, I think the problems are entirely fixable but would require changing so much there'd definitely be idiot backlash

Racism as a narrative element of a setting is something I like to clear with my players and put at their discretion if I use it at all, and anything that makes that harder -- like integrating it into the mechanics and forcing me to homebrew alternative balancing factors -- isn't something I like to see, although it's not a strict dealbreaker.

e: if it's core to the premise of the game itself that's worth considering too but, like, we're talking about Shadowrun here, not Spire

It also makes a certain difference if all the PCs and their allies are automatically the people discriminated against. Obviously you want all of the themes of your game to be okay with your players, but there's a big difference between "we are the victims of bigotry coming together to fight it" and "picking certain character options makes you a target of extra bigotry." Spire being in the former category seems like an additional important difference.

The second is more what I was talking about - where there's races (as in Shadowrun 6e) which have outright better stats than others, but have "this race is discriminated against and disliked" as a balancing disadvantage.

If it's mechanized, racism is a universal negative that implies it's a metaphysical fact (-2 to all diplomacy rolls because everyone is racist against you), and if it's not you're relying on the GM to be racist precisely enough to balance the mechanical advantages.

I don't think it's a great way to operate.

When doing Lines and Veils, racism has been a Line for one of my tables. Not, like, "don't be racist", but rather "I don't want to have to think about or deal with racism for the next three hours". Any game that bakes it in is right out.
